Things to count

Thursday, March 04, 2021

I saw a small sign at a store:
"Two customers or less"

Hmm, the "English stickler" in me came up thanks to Lynne Truss. I said to my wife, ... if you can count it should be "fewer". Less, is for things you don't count, like less cream.

I highly recommend Truss' book "Eats Shoots & Leaves". Part humour, part learning grammar and punctuation. She sees badly punctuated signs and wants to join the militant wing of the Apostrophe Protection Society. Fun reading!

Read it, ... But I'm getting off topic.

So after I say that the sign should say "fewer", my wife in a heartbeat says "they should have written 'fewer ... but the sign was small and they needed to use less letters" i say to her "they needed to use fewer letters. Then I glance away from the sign and at her, big big smile on her face, she got me.

A panda walks into a café. He orders a sandwich, eats it, then draws a gun and fires two shots in the air.

"Why?" asks the confused waiter, as the panda makes towards the exit. The panda produces a badly punctuated wildlife manual and tosses it over his shoulder.

"I'm a panda," he says at the door. "Look it up."

The waiter turns to the relevant entry in the manual and, sure enough, finds an explanation.

    The manual says:
"Panda. Large black-and-white bear-like mammal, native to China. Eats, shoots, & leaves."
