April 22, 2021 PUT OTHERS FIRST

In this “me” world, it seems to be acceptable to put ourselves first. We see commercials about giving ourselves a break. We see advertisements about pampering ourselves and getting what we want out of life. While we are to take care of ourselves, we aren’t supposed to focus solely on us and what we want out of life. Zig Ziglar once said, “You can have everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.” So much truth in that!

To be compassionate people, we have to put others first. This means we don’t think about what is in it for us but rather what is in it for them. We don’t wonder why others aren’t doing more for us. We look for ways to do more for others. We are to take interest in others and value them more than we value ourselves. Everything is not about us. We are to live intentionally each day seeking ways to look out for the interests of others, put ourselves in their shoes, and see what we can do to help them. And when we mess up and get selfish again, we should quickly get back on track and seek to serve others.

Philippians 2:3-4 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” (NIV)

1. Write what you do to put others first.
2. List what more you can do to be selfless.
3. Know God wants you to seek to serve others.
4. Find ways to take sincere interest in other people.

Dear Lord, we know You tell us to help others. You want us to be compassionate and truly care about helping those in need. You want us to seek ways to put others first and serve them. We pray You will allow Your Holy Spirit to work through us and show us opportunities to take interest in others so we can get to know them and take actions that will add value to their lives. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
