Finally got to the neurosurgeon today, after waiting a month to see her and after 7 months of tests and increasing pain and debilitation for my dear man.
And...she is sorry but it is definitely a syrinx (a fluid filled sac) in the spinal cord and will require a specialized neurosurgeon who operates on the spinal cord.
This is a rare case as David has none of the usual causes for this condition.
Probably not related to his back surgery that went bad in 2014 but possibly related to the infections after that (meningitis, encephalitis and herpes infections of the cord and brain).
Anyway...here’s the good news/ bad news....we have a world renowned specialist here in RI who teaches at Brown and is highly respected...good news!
But she is taking the month of May off to visit her folks in Germany and the soonest she can see him is June 24th. emoticon
Almost no chance of a cancellation before that.
And...he will need some more specialized MRI’s before she will operate.
He is quite claustrophobic and has endured FIVE already.
My man is such an amazing and strong person.
He had a few hours of sadness before his Yankee stoicism kicked in and that was it.
No self pity at all.
What gets him through all of this is thinking of Patrick.
He said at least he has something that can be fixed (we hope).
If he is laid up for a year and he has to miss a family vacation so be it.
What a man.
