May 6, 2021 STAY SHARP

If we have ever tried to cut something with dull scissors or knives, we know how difficult it can be. Attempting to cut through things with a dull edge will not give us the clean cut that a sharp edge would. After a while we have to throw the knives or scissors away if we can’t find a way to sharpen them to make them like-new again. Dull knives and scissors are just no good to us at all.

If we have moved away from God, we can become spiritually dull. Growing spiritually dull means we have succumbed to the ways of the world. We can’t hear Him when He calls us and we certainly don’t understand when His words. When we step away from God for a day or a few days, we can quickly get into a bad habit which moves us further and further away from Him. Then we become spiritually dull.

God has so much He wants to say to us but we need to be sure we have not grown spiritually dull and turned away from Him. To stay sharp, we should read and meditate on God’s word. We should obey Him and show love to others. We should seek opportunities to do His will and serve others. Living an obedient life for Christ will help us stay sharp and not grow spiritually dull so we can hear and understand God’s word.

SCRIPTURE:
Hebrews 6:11-12 “Our great desire is that you will keep on loving others as long as life lasts, in order to make certain that what you hope for will come true. Then you will not become spiritually dull and indifferent. Instead, you will follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s promises because of their faith and endurance.” (NLT)

Ecclesiastes 10:10 “Using a dull ax requires great strength, so sharpen the blade. That’s the value of wisdom; it helps you succeed.” (NLT)

ACTION STEPS:
1. Write how you sharpen your spiritual life.
2. List ways you may have become spiritually dull.
3. Know God wants you to stay sharp.
4. Get into His word, pray and seek ways to obey Him every day.

PRAYER:
Dear Lord, our habits can take us down a path of doing right but can also take us down a path of doing wrong. Help us to see what things are moving us away from You. Help us to know what things we need to stop doing and what we need to start doing. Show us how to become sharper and sharper every day as we pray, meditate on Your word, and draw close to You. Help us practice and sharpen our habits of love, service, mercy, and grace. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

REMEMBER:
Hebrews 5:11 “There is much more we would like to say about this, but it is difficult to explain, especially since you are spiritually dull and don’t seem to listen.” (NLT)

Matthew 13:15 “For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes—so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.” (NLT)

FOCUS:
Mark 8:21 “‘Don’t you understand yet?’ he asked them.” (NLT)
