Follow-up re: helping a music coach new to strings. Very positive response to what it feels like to be a “newbie” on a string instrument. Once you are actively playing, it is hard to imagine how you got started. It feels like a very, very long time ago - not just chronologically, but not being able to touch that feeling. Being a part of the instrument experience is so natural, so much a part of who you are, and how you express music making. That’s what I feel about being a bowed string player.

For the last little bit, I’ve been helping a “new to strings” music coach by sitting in with the ensemble and playing from the full score.
non-geek translation: If you are reading from sheet music, especially with more than 2 parts (example: 2 violin parts, 1 viola part, different part for cello and string bass), you often play from music that only has the part that you play for that music selection - let’s say violin 2 (Yes, violin 1 is a different part!). When you play from a full score, you play from sheet music that shows all 5 parts, at the same time. It can be confusing (and sometimes the print size is small to get as much music on the page before you need to turn pages); but the advantage is seeing what was supposed to be played, and as a coach, having the choice to jump in, and play a part other than your own if other players are gettting stuck (whether in rhythm or possible mix-ups in the pitch of the notes).
I enjoy string ensemble music, so being able to read from a full score is an important skill to maintain and practice.

I was VERY pleased with the results; I think this student will work out perfectly during the school year!
I started an adult cello student last week; there isn't much there, but we will work at it, and see what can be done. I am willing to be surprised, just as much as the student!

I begin with a new student this afternoon. My colleague had an experience with starting a new student that was a bit off putting; but I have a good feel of how this lesson will turn out.

If you can learn with out a teacher, you are amazing! For me the rhythms alone were enough to make me get a teacher...interview a few before you sign up, find one that seems to be a good fit with your learning style and personality. the other team leader is a teacher/performer she can give some advice too I am sure.

Take Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all that I have and possess. Thou hast given all to me. To Thee, O lord, I return it. All is Thine, dispose of it wholly according to Thy will. Give me Thy love and thy grace, for this is sufficient for me.

Hi everyone, I'm new to music, the group and the violin! I'm learning to read music and learning to play violin on my own at home. Just looking at some You tube videos and got some books at the library to get me started. I'm excited and can't wait to play a full song!

Change your mind, change your world!
