Hi, Marissa. Welcome to the team!

Getting used to having IBS can be challenging, but now that you have a diagnosis, you can zero in on the treatment.

I have IBS-A (alternating diarrhea and constipation), mostly D. I only have severe pain when I'm constipated, and I haven't had to go to the emergency room for it!

I'm sorry that this is how the IBS manifests for you.

I'll be as much support to you as I can!

Take care, Terry

I know what you mean. Severe pain has not been a major issue. Mostly continued sharp pain in my right side, under my liver. It is really annoying and sometimes very painful.

I don't know why the docs don't have more nutritional counseling. It probably doesn't make much money.

I wish you luck and I know you will find some information useful here.

Thanks for the welcome! I have been in the hospital ER about 20 times in the last year and a half (the most recent in August) for IBS. And the comparison to labor pains was the exact wording I used this last time!

welcome

I have IBS-C (constipation) This group is a wonderful place. Like you I have had a bazillion tests. I gave up after some where around 10 years. I really thought I was dieing of cancer.

This place has been helpful. There are a few books out there that are really helpful.

I have cut dairy, red meat and pork, I now take a fiber supplement, drink plenty of water. Sourdough bread is suppose to be the best for people with IBS.

My GI doc said eat more fiber. Well he never mentioned there is a big difference between soluble and insoluble. That was my biggest problem. I now eat mostly soluble fiber and some insoluble with my meals.

Iceberg lettuce is the worst. spring lettuce is the best. I was doing everything healthy, but eating to much veggies all alone. If you eat a salad, make it at the end of you meal or with soluble fiber. I keep a lot of bananas on hand.

I still have problems, but I am going everyday now. Before it was once every 5 days and that is if I used an enema. I call that progress.

All I can do, is my best!

MOMMY2JOAQUIN~Welcome to this team! Sorry you are experiencing a hard time with IBS but looks like you are looking for help in the right places. Were you put in the hospital for the IBS or the migraines? I remember my IBS symptoms included pains so bad they were worse than labor pains! Hope that wasn't your case...
Good luck finding the right combo of meds and foods to eat so you can enjoy your life!

Hello all! My name is Marissa, I'm 30, and I live in San Antonio, TX. I have been a member on Spark since June 2006. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a 3.5yo son, and a 16 month old daughter. I was "diagnosed" with IBS after months of horrible tests to check for all kinds of other syndroms/diseases. My GI specialist finally decided on IBS after all the tests and then sort of just left things in the air. He gave me hyoscamine (spelling ?) to take before each meal and sent me on my way. That stuff might as well be a sugar pill for all the good it has done. So, I began researching IBS on my own. I am taking a fiber supplement and I am getting ready to start a probiotic supplement and peppermint oil capsules. I also recently went to a new doctor and I am hopefully going to be starting on a new path for this issue. He has put me on Elavil which he says will not only help the IBS but also help prevent my constant migraines and help with my sleeping problems. He has also given me Phenergan and Tramadol for the severe flare-ups that usually put me in the ER on a phenergan and morpheine drip. He is sure that if I can get a jump on the pain then I won't have to go to the ER. I am already restricting my diet from foods that I know are triggers (like red meat and eggs). I would welcome any and all comments or advice anyone may have. I just want to be able to go out to dinner with my husband, or play at the park with my kids, or go on a road trip without fear. I look forward to getting to know people who know what I'm going through, where I am headed, and I look forward to being able to offer any support I can to all of you! Thanks for reading my novel! :)
