Welcome! The group isn't super active but there are 3 of us that post regularly in the daily chat thread. I'm a retired resource teacher as well. I retired 2 years ago, then went back after one semester and taught last spring semester. This year I'm tutoring and helping give district assessments 3 times per year.

How did I miss this group? I'm a retired Resource Specialist currently doing some contract work for my district. I am also involved with my state's organization for special educators.

emoticon You have your hands full! I would suggest walking at school for even 10-15 min. before you go home if you can. Find ways to be active with the kids if at all possible. That may be the only way you can fit exercise in. 10 min. chunks are better than nothing!

I'm new, but not new, new. Several years ago I was quite the sparkler! This previous year I gained a truly astonishing amount of weight in one year! Hate to say it, but I think my job (obsession) should take some of the blame.

I know. I need to own it. I do, but I also need to learn how to balance. I need to severely cut down on my work hours. You know, like maybe work only 10 hours more than I'm paid for.

Love the kids. Love the job, but I also love my family and my health. They are both suffering from all these hours!

So I return for support and to give support!

Hi! I'm Emily. I'm 22 years old and still in college. I'm a special education and elementary education major with a reading minor. I'm currently getting over one of the toughest and stressful semesters I've ever had, mostly because of things outside of school. This past semester has completely screwed up my workout schedule and now I've got to get back into it!

Hi I am Vici and live in AZ. I teach in a K-8 resource room, the only special ed teacher on staff. I have been in this position only since the beginning of this school year. Previously I taught K-12 resource in a rural school for 2 years, severe profound for 2 years and mild/moderate for a year. I have also taught in the general ed environment.

I have 180 pounds to loose and am looking for support where ever I can get it. Hope to talk to you all soon.

Hi! I'm Michele, currently in NJ. I was a special education teacher for 17 years in Virginia, primarily teaching students with autism and intellectual disabilities. We recently moved up to NJ and I will be working with The ARC in their family support program starting in February.

HI, everyone!

I'm an intervention specialist in Ohio. I teach at a residential facility. I have been here for 5 years now. Prior to that I taught for 2 years at the ED unit for our school district. I am currently working on my doctorate in special education. I'm getting close to my doctoral study. I submit the form to get my committee this week.

So glad to see that there is a team for special educators. My name is Karen and I have been a special educator for 18 years. I have worked with students with learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, autism, intellectual disabilities, and other health impairments. I actually did not start my teaching career until I was in my mid-30s (a second career). I love my students, but there are days when I feel overwhelmed, even after all these years. I have incorporated my interest in running, fitness, and nutrition into my classroom.

Hello! I'm Bri. I will be starting my seventh year as a special education teacher on Wednesday. For the past seven years, I have taught Learning Support (think Resource Room) for a variety of grades ranging from 3-6. I adore my job and have gone on to get my Master's in Special Education as well as receive my certification in Special Education Leadership. On top of that I am a mother to my four year old daughter.

I used Spark six years ago to lose over 50 pounds for my wedding. Shortly after getting married I found out I was pregnant and gained 75 in pregnancy. Since then I have been battling to get off the baby weight. This summer I was fortunate to find a fantastic group of people that have helped me get on the right track. Working with them since May, I am going back to school 15 pounds lighter. Still, I have about 20 pounds left to lose and I am worried that with heading back to school my good habits will start to slip. I'm hoping that by using Spark I can keep motivated and hold myself accountable.

~Bri~

Hi, I'm Jessie. I'm an Intervention Specialist for an Autism program where I work with 5th and 6th grade students. I'm also a wife, mother of a 7 year old girl, and stepmother to a 12 year old boy. My biggest challenge is to balance a healthy lifestyle, work, and family life.

Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts.

Hi! I thought this team might be a good fit for me, since my work is my passion, in the most productive and positive way possible. My name is Niki, I'm 25 and have been on SparkPeople for 5 years. I had tremendous luck with it my first couple years, but then I totally got off track and put on more weight than when I first started! (35 extra pounds to be exact) I'm trying to get into a healthy lifestyle and stop making excuses for not making it to the gym.

I teach at a congregated school for kids with disabilities, it's a really special place and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. I look forward to chatting with you all and sharing ideas for both health and work!

Hi all! I'm a middle school resource room math teacher. This is my 4th year in my district, and I love working with students daily. I have been busy on Pinterest pinning all sorts of crafty ideas for my class, and have actually made some starting today. Loving that I can get ready for my students.

I am using the last 2 weeks of my summer vacation to prepare for my classroom from home and get ready for the new school year. I am also getting into an exercise program prior to school starting. I still need to figure out when I will exercise when I am not home all day. I think I am going to try to do the treadmill before I go to school.....but I will see how that pans out after a few days. Still 2 weeks to get ready for early mornings.

Nicole :)

Hello everyone! I am excited to find this group, thanks to LDION2005! I am starting my second year as a SPED teacher. Last year I was a part time intern, going to school full time. This year I will be working full-time and finishing up my SPED credential program in December.

I have been overweight for a while, and know that I tend to eat and withdraw when I am stressed. I really would like to continue the progress that I have made so far with SP, and handle my stress about school and work in a healthier manner.

The challenges I am gearing up for are handling a larger caseload and further developing my behavior management strategies. I already have two IEPs before school starts.

I'm excited to be a part of this group and to have the opportunity to share this journey to a more healthful life with all of you!

Hi there,

I'm Wendi and I just got the call that I will be teaching in my first classroom. I've been a sub for three years but this will be my first full time teaching assignment. I will be in a self-contained communication-behavior (CB) classroom with students on the autism spectrum in 3-5th grade.

I'd lost a bit of weight but have gain back about 1/2. I know it's time again to get serious but my motivation is somewhere else right now and seriously lacking in that department...lol!

My name is Dawn and I am a Special Needs Kindergarten teacher in Georgia. I am at a point in my life where I know how important it is to live a healhy life. I have been struggling with my weight for a long time (lose it, then gain it back). I am making a lifestyle change that includes eating right, exercising, and making healthy choices. I have over 100 pounds to lose, however, I have the right mindet this time. I've learned the hard way that it won't be easy and will take time. Learning patience!! emoticon

Hi! I teach preschoolers who have special needs. My students are usually 4-5 years old. I also help with the 3 year old class. I have been teaching preschoolers for the past five years. Prior to that, I taught 6th and 7th grade resource language arts and tutored 8th graders. I am trying to get healthy and stronger so that I can keep up with my students. I am looking forward to getting to know everyone here. I joined SP a couple of years ago, but now want to Spark more seriously. Have a great day Sparking everyone! emoticon

Good morning! I am a remedial reading teacher working primarily with IEP students with disabilities in reading/writing and those requiring speech interventions in a suburban 6-7 building in central New York. This is my 11th year working as a reading teacher, but my 1st year with all IEP students.

I'm recently married (July '11) and my husband & I are hoping to add to our family by the end of 2012. He works in college athletics and doesn't always understand my need to eat well & exercise often to manage the stress of my day. He also doesn't understand lesson planning, modifying, re-teaching, and finding the smallest amount of growth such a big deal... but he's learning.

I'm looking forward to this forum helping me reach my goal of resuming some fantastic habits in hopes of losing some pounds, managing my stress, and remaining focused on the positive, even when it seems like things are slowly declining.

Hi :)
My name is Jess and I work in Oklahoma. I also have an autistic son who is in a self-contained class. I "get it" from both sides, which makes it interesting. Over the last 3 years, my weight has climbed and climbed. I've started running (slowly) and trying to make better food choices. During the summer when I can get to the gym regularly, it works. During the school year, the lbs add back on.
Thanks
