I always found it a contradiction when they'd say "don't lose more than a pound or two a week, but then with some people recomend weightloss surgery that can cause extremely rapid weightloss. I would think that as Dr. Huzeiga(sp?), it is a different type of weightloss.

The article does kind of remind you that it is a competition and people will no doubt do crazy things for money.

It was in the print paper--I will try to look at the web and see if it is there. It was the Los Angeles Times.

This is it

I don't know how to make it a link, so you'll have to copy and paste in your browser.

There was an article about Shay and the Subway challenge in the paper today, and they talked to Dr. H about the size of the new contestants. His comment was that they have learned some lessons from the disaster of the Tracey thing last season, and know that they have to be extremely diligent about monitoring this group because of their horribly bad health. He said that this was the sickest group they have ever had. He also mentioned that they are addiing new features to the program as a result, designed for teaching them about health and monitoring.

I agree with Raggdoll as well. As motiviating and real as it could be in the beginning, this show is getting a bit extreme for me.

the article pointed out what I said on another thread...something is going to happen because of the sizes of the contestants they are "USING". But I'll bet it doesn't get aired! It will probably be explained away if a contestant disappears one week... something like 'so-and-so left for acute medical problems'

Very good article! It's too bad because the show has inspired so many in such a good way. Including myself. Here on SP we learn to lose weight in the safest, most sensible lifestyle changing way.

The show entertains us and shows us that maybe we can do more than we think we can. Also fun to see before and after, the changes are faster than we can see in ourselves.

I agree that if 50% of the contestants have kept the weight off, their success rate is very good.

Thank you for sharing this article. I have battle weight all my life, but all my doctors have said the same thing, weight loss in moderation. Yes, I have lost 8 pounds in a week, felt great at first, but it caught up with me, hit a wall, quit again, and then felt lousy for quitting again. If I don't lose weight in a week, that's okay, the scale will show it the following week. Just stay on track, stay motivated and you will lose those unwanted pounds!

It is an interesting article. Thank you. I think we need to understand that this is shown for "entertainment" value. It is not truly a healthy show nor is it meant to cause us to copy the behaviors.

Thanks for sharing that article. I would like to see people who go to extremes kicked out of the contest.

Interesting article. Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately, unsafe practices are a reality in both the tv world and real world. People are going to try anything and everything to lose weight as quickly and easily as possible. We would probably not want to watch the show if individuals didn't have so much to lose and weren't reaching high levels of success. Plus the desire to win money will often drive individuals to take desperate measures to lose weight faster than their opponents. Finally, the thought that came to mind after reading the article is that gaining weight back is definitely a reality. A 50% success rate of keeping the weight off is probably pretty good. I wonder what it would be in the real world? Look how many people come back to Spark People after regaining weight they had previously lost.

I found this eye opening in some aspects, but, it also confirmed some of the things that I have been thinking all along.

DIET IS A FOUR LETTER WORD!!!!

We are constantly creating our "karma" or destiny through our intentions, thoughts and deeds in this moment. It is achieved through countless deliberate acts of selflessness.

It's hard to be happy with others if we are not happy with ourselves.

Just keep on moving and you'll get there.
