HI, this is my first day. I've been dealing with depression most of my life and it is hard to think of myself as anything else. I'm hoping to learn how other people are able to get past the label.

Hey! I'm new to SP, and I've been dealing with depression for the last year. I'm really happy to see that there's a group here to chat with, and I'm hoping we can all help each other out. I don't really have a lot of friends IRL to chat with, so any advice you guys can give would be really appreciated.

Hi LONGISLANDPAM! Glad that you have joined SP and this team. It's amazing the support and advice that is available to a person here. I'm so grateful for the help I've been given to get me moving towards my goals and for the encouragement from people when feeling overwhelmed or stuck. You're in the right place!

Have a wonderful weekend, to you and everyone on the team!!

emoticon to the team, LONGISLANDPAM . You have a very busy life between your vocation and your grown children. Now is the time to take care of you! After all, the better you take care of you, the better you can care for those kids in need of guidance. If you haven't already, feel free to join in any of the conversations on the team threads. We are here to support and motivate each other as we seek to become healthier.

Nice to see so many new members! It has been awhile since I've been able to join in on welcoming new people to our team...good job to everyone for coming on board. This team (as well as SP) are so excellent at giving support when needed and providing answers to our queries.

I've grown and learned so much about myself since joining, and can't wait to continue the journey. Anything we can do to help, just let us know!!

emoticon to both SP and the team, GEOGIRLPNW. I am so happy you took the time to introduce yourself. One of the strongest components of SP is the support and motivation we give each other. Now is YOUR time. Too, often as you said, we take care of everyone, BUT ourselves. This is your day, your week and your year to find yourself and take care of yourself. Know we are here for you as you journey towards a healthier you!

Hi! I joined SparkPeople yesterday and I'm excited to see there's a team that understands depression and all the things that go along with it! I've read many posts that sound as if I could have written them myself! I joined SparkPeople not only to lose weight, but to find me!

emoticon to both the team and to SP, SHAYSHAN aka Shannon. First of all, great job on completing almost two weeks. If you are finding it "do-able" you must be doing something right. Second, not all medication cause weight gain. The pharmacy probably gave you a printout listing the information about the medication. On that will list the potential side effects. effects. However not all medications react the same with each person so even if it is listed does NOT mean it WILL happen. If this is a huge concern, you might want to discuss it with your doctor. Finally, if there is anything we can do to help you find that healthier you, please feel free to ask on any of our team threads.

Hey guys i'm shannon. Fairly new here but on SP for about a week. I'm loving it. This is also my first diet so i'm a little intimidated but its been a week almost 2 and i'm doing REALLY well. It's not overwhelming it's do-able. I am on meds for my depression and my dad is on major meds for it and has mentioned it makes him gain weight. And i wonder do all the meds do that?? I'm only on one but he is bi-polar and manic so he is on quite a few. I'm not sure if it really is the meds, if it matters which ones your on... on and on. Thanks in advance guys.

Hi! I am not new to this site, I have actually been here before, and this is my second day back. I have dealt with depression on and off since I was just 14, and I wonder sometimes if it is clinical, emotional or a combination of both. I know that my father suffered from depression, and also my mom, and both have been on meds for it. I am actually really happy right now, and I find that taking care of my body helps it. Especially given the fact that I have juvenile onset diabetes that I have lived with since I was 11 yrs old, and I know that erratic blood sugar and bad health can cause mood swings. Anyhow, a little more about me. I am a 30 yr mother of a little boy and I am motivated to do this by him. It happened that I went to a doctor about a week ago for an ear infection and was hoping to slide out with an antibiotic and a painkiller, but left with both, in addition to flushot, blood work, cholesterol meds, vitamin D and I was told if I couldn't control my sugar on my own, I'd have to go to the hospital. SOOO. here I am and I am excited and super motivated. Let's see how it goeslllll

emoticon to the team, AJ1711 and congratulations on your recent wedding. I am so glad you have taken the time to post. This is a supportive and motivational team that cares for each member. While seeking professional help can be difficult, know that there are options out there. Many professionals offer a sliding scale that allows you a discounted price if you qualify. Likewise many priests and pastors will help you without a fee involved. Whatever you decide is best for you, know that this team has your back. Feel free to chat with us on any of our many threads. You are NOT alone on this journey!

I'm not sure if this article would be of use. On page two are some treatment options:

Hi,

I just joined SP today and am actually here on a down day. I've been dealing with depression for almost the past 20 years due to bad coping advice I was given after my grandparents died. My husband has been in treatment for depression for a while and they just discovered for him that it's been a symptom of his ADHD and my husband is encouraging me to seek help myself now. Right now it's a financial hardship if we do, but hopefully soon I can seek professional help again and get this back under control.

Hello. I joined sparkpeople awhile ago, but haven't been very active. Two weeks ago my depression flared up and I was really struggling. I'm doing better now, but figured I needed to add more avenues of support in my life. So here I am. :)

I've struggled with depression for over 20 yrs. I'm trying to implement a healthy life style in hopes it will alleviate some of my mood swings. I'm having some success, but when I get depressed all my healthy habits slip away.

Welcome to a great team of people who understand where you have been and what you have experienced. I have also discovered the importance of regular physical activity. I do yoga about 6 days a week and even when it takes every ounce of ambition to get to my mat, I always feel better after doing my exercise. Remember even 10 minutes can help.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

Hi all. I've been off and on SP for years. Early 2011, I deleted my old account and made a new one as a "new start"... didn't last. :-p I had been doing great with the new year, but my depression has taken a turn for the worst, and with it my desire to eat healthy is gone.

I've had "issues" since my early teens. I've been told it's partially genetic and partially because of events in my life. Meds help some and I was actually to the point where I thought I could go off them, but I'm in my dark place right now, as I like to call it.

I guess I'm just hoping that I'll gain a friend or two who understand what it's like to want to be healthier both mentally and physically and the struggles that come with it all. Sometimes just reading a story that shows me I'm really not alone is all it takes to get me through it.

Weight-wise, my goal is 1lb per week and to actually start exercising.

Hi - I'm Maggie - I have been away from SparkPeople for a while and am starting over. I have battled depression off and on all of my life and as I look back it is easy to see that my mental state and my health/weight have tended to yo-yo'd together. Although I am quite overweight right now and I have discovered that my BP is through the roof, emotionally I am in a comparatively "ok" spot at the moment. I feel motivated and capable of doing what I need to do to improve my health... but live in fear of slipping over the edge into deep damaging depression at any moment - I know some of you will understand what I mean - it can be exhausting. It has been over 8 years since my last MAJOR dive off the edge and I have been, and remain committed to being pro-active about not letting myself ever get to that point again. I know that taking better care of my health (losing weigh, getting my BP under control, etc.) will do nothing but help me in that quest and I am a firm believe in support from anywhere you can you get it! Thanks for having this group - I look forward to the journey with you all!

emoticon to the team, GypsyBrie aka Brie. The beauty of this team is that even if you are a "loner", we are here when you need us. This team offers a lot of support and motivation and all you have to do is participate in any or all of our team threads. I understand what it is like to be burned by others so badly that it is hard to open up. However I have also found that it is through the support and care of others that has helped me get to my goal and stay there. Know you are NOT alone on this journey and that we will help you along the way.

GypsyBrie welcome to the group. I wish you many blessings and much success. Mental is like 90% of the battle for me. I deal with depression and anxiety a lot and I have to teach myself one day at a time, how to work for the positive. I gained a lot of weight in the past few years. My aunt died, her husband, my uncle and our pastor for many years left our church. Then our church turned upside down and family turned against family that attended there together. I didn't think I would ever get over the mean things that were said to me or my mom or that I would ever be able to forgive them for making my Grandma cry. I didn't want to go anywhere or talk to anyone. I felt like I couldn't trust a living soul. Now I'm a little more guarded, careful, and less gullible, but I let go of the pain. I talk to them and laugh with them whenever we're together. I do it for myself. I was miserable living in my own world. Opening up means getting hurt a lot of times and it is hard to make that leap, but it is so much better than living alone. I will be praying that God will help you open yourself back to others. I will pray that he sends you the right person to be supportive! Feel free to add me as a friend. I will support you in any way that I can!

Psalm 17:15 As for me I will behold thy face in righteousness I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness. KJV

Hello. New to the team, but not to SP. Been on SP for awhile now actually. I go up and down with sticking with my plans. I lost 50 lbs in 4 months a few years ago, but gained back after going through a depression period. So I know how to do it, I just need to stick with it again.

I know that I need the support and encouragment of others, but it is hard for me as I am very much a loner. Have had many people many people in my life burn the trust I gave and at the moment I don't have any more to give even though I need to learn to do so and that is why I am here.

Hi I am Don and new here and I am committed to losing 100+ pounds and to eventually work my way up to run a 5k. I am trying to live life in a way that I can look back on it in 50 years and say "I have really livedĒ As the line says in Shawshank Redemption, "You got to get busy living or get busy dying." So losing weight for me right now is a big thing to me to be able to really live. I am tired and overwhelmed at being overweight and being hindered by it. So I joined Spark people to seek out a bold future.

Hey there! I am new! I've been on here for almost a week now. There is just so much to see, this is my first trip to your team. I take meds for bipolar depression and I'm doing good with it. I'm realizing how much exercise truly helps. Just 30 minutes of exercise is worth more than Xanax. I've learned to deal with my depression. I do good with it. I went through many hospital/ambulance runs thinking I was having a heart attack, a stroke, a seizure. I've learned how to manage my panic attacks, my anxiety, and my depression a lot. I know to breathe!

Welcome Jane , we are glad you are here with us.

I am 42 no kids and the same kind of sweet husband. I also struggle to do the things I need to do (cook, clean, exercise). Maybe we can help each other out. Message me if you want. I may not be the hard nose you need, but if we can encourage each other it might just work.

emoticon to the team, JAARIEL35 aka Jane. I'm so sorry you are struggling so, but you have come to the right place. We are a supportive and motivational team that wants to see you succeed. If you haven't already, feel free to check out our other threads. Since this thread doesn't see the traffic the others do, you might want to ask for an accountability partner on one or more of the others. In the meantime, have you considered tracking your exercising and your meal preparation under "Other Goals"? This might be of help. Above all, know you are NOT alone and we are here to help.

Hi Everyone!

I'm a 45 yr old SAHM w/ a 15 yr old son & a sweet husband. Due to some medical issues, I've been on various meds that have really thrown my appetite & emotions out of whack. I just don't get hungry that often; I know it may sound like a dream, but it's a nightmare! I haven't lost any weight, and the thought of cooking depresses me. In fact, I often feel blah.

SO, I'm hoping to find some encouragement & support & occasional kicks in the butt to make me prepare nutritious meals for my family. They've been living on junk food for too long & the guilt I feel is awful.

If anyone is interested in trying out being an accountability partner, I'd love to see how that would go. I basically need to be held responsible for making 3 meals a day, getting a bit of exercise, and doing a bit of housework each day.

My husband is too "sweet" to force me to do these things & I need someone tough!

I'm open to anyone who's open to me!
Blessings, Jane

emoticon to the team, EBOLLMEYER13. I'm sorry to hear about the depression and how it had you sleeping so much. Hopefully with your diagnosis you will now be able to find ways to deal with the depression so that it doesn't take over your life. Treat yourself as kindly and as compassionately as you do that that special guy in your life. You deserve it!
