MAUITN ~ Definitely take your own salad dressing, I do it all the time. It's really hard when it's a business luncheon that everything is just served, no choices. I feel your pain, I deal with it all the time.

I stay on my road and I don't change lanes.

Yikes, Mauitn! That's quite a lineup! Can you sneak in salad dressing and/or hummus dip to help things?

I just reread my post below and looked at the calendar. I have one social function this Friday and four social functions next week all involving either a dinner or lunch over which I have no control! emoticon emoticon Obviously I need to figure out how I can handle this.

Morning all. Happy December 1st. I allowed Thanksgiving and social functions to throw me off my game plan. So I am determined to go through all of the social functions in December with a better plan. More planning and prep. More exercise.

Hello Everyone. I bought my Dad the ETL book. He will adpat a part of it, although my parents still eat fish. At thanksgviving, with the white beard and the red shirt, in his pic, he looked like a cute Santa, so he and my Mom are doing bell fat cure, but after watching Dr. Furham on public T.v he is interested in GOMBS - so we will see.

My mother thought I look so much thinner since she saw me in August - I ain't lost anything, so it must be the exercise.

Yes, we had our first snow of the year yesterday. We had between an inch and a half and two inches, but had melted by evening. It was a wet snow which stuck to the trees and made for a Winter wonderland look.

They live in the Cookeville area. I love the area, especially in fall, but not so much in the winter with icy roads.

After my A1c test Thursday morning we are heading for Tennessee to visit son #2 and family. My Tennessee sweeties are growing up too fast. The oldest will be 13 in March. I'd like to say "Stop" but that doesn't happen, so I just visit as often as possible.

Eating on the trip: I plan Subway salads. My DIL says she will have beans cooked for us Friday night when we get in. She always tries to accommodate my vegetarian eating.

It wasnít so bad to have turkey with all of the fixings as it reinforced the fact that I really do feel better without the meat and fats. And all my indulgences were of the very small size. I am glad to be back on track. I believe I will have fewer desires for off plan items in the future. A lot of the desire is mental.

It's amazing how one little tiny splurge can get the juices flowing and the cravings back screaming loud and clear.

One little piece of birthday cake, One little piece of French toast and I am hard and heavy craving JUNK!

I didn't gain an ounce over my indulgence, but it will take me 2 weeks to get past the cravings that have resurfaced!

SO NOT WORTH IT ! !

Does anyone else experience this?

Happy "getting it all back together week!"
It does take a little while to get the indulgences out of your system, but is so worth it. Unfortunately, we dined at restaurants too many times this past week. All that salt makes me crave crunchy, sweet, and/or chocolate. Also, yesterday I made a really yummy coleslaw but used commercial cole slaw dressing. It left my glucose too high.
Here's to better eating.

Booklady, that is a yummy recipe! Thanks!

Everyone who went overboard this holiday, brush yourself off and give yourself a hug. Guilt isn't part of your program remember that.

I went 99.99999% vegan as of yesterday ladies. No more animal bi-products in my program except 4 Tbls of organic, non-gmo, non-hormone, free-range, grass-fed creamer in my mondos. Not bad at all!

Have a wonderful Monday. I'm starting my work day early. I will be back!

The pumpkin smoothie, I think was a spark recipe.

1 15 oz can pumpkin
2 c. soymilk
2 c. ice
2 tbsp maple syrup
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tbsp pumpkin pie spice

I used stevia instead of maple syrup. Both Sis-in-law and hubby liked it. I froze the leftover.

Be proud of our successes and don't kick ourselves for our "social eating". My hubby's sis came home with us after Thanksgiving reunion and stayed two nights. Always fun to have someone after the holidays, just like when the kids were home. I babysat while son #1 and his wife did the all night black Friday thing on Thursday evening. Then hubby, sis, and I ate breakfast at IHOP. I always get the Fit for Me spinach omelet there, with fruit and salsa. That served as brunch so lunch was a pumpkin smoothie, raw celery and carrots, almonds. Then Friday evening we all took hubby's brother out for a birthday dinner at Cheddar's. I like Cheddar's because I can get the vegetable plate, with salad, and stay legal. I maintained, didn't lose, but at least I don't have to work on another extra pound or two from Thanksgiving. That is a plus!
Saturday morning: spinach smoothie and a mile walk! Sis-in-law, a tall, skinny lady, liked the smoothie so I sent the recipe home with her.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. My focus yesterday was less about what I ate and rather about being mindful and not overdoing it. So I had a tiny bit of everything and walked away feeling very satisfied instead of stuffed like usual. I also was able to get away without taking leftovers home, so no temptation! Feels good to feel good!

Last two days have been less than stellar for me. Not a complete wash out (which is progress, for me). We are going back home tomorrow, which will help immensely. Actually, today hasn't been too bad except for a bowl of ice cream (unplanned) and a turkey sandwich (planned). Tonight's dinner will be pretty good as my body is tired of being mistreated. We did get out for a walk today and did the 5k yesterday.

Just got back from a short (2 day) out of town trip for Thanksgiving. I did okay, but harder than I thought it would be without my kitchen right here. Everyone very supportive though and I found out my cousin is Vegan which I never knew, so there was plenty of food for us to eat for the Thanksgiving meal.

Funny story, I had leftover oatmeal from yesterday and my mom got it out of the fridge and put it in the microwave for me for breakfast this morning. While it was heating up, I cut up some strawberries. I was talking to my sister and nephews and wasn't paying attention, stirred the strawberries in and started eating. It WASN'T oatmeal. I was a mixture of rice and dal! I picked the strawberries out and ate them, then at the rice/dal mixture. Very funny though, my mom grabbed the wrong container.

MUDDER91: If you are not getting any animal products at all, I think you should get a blood test to see where your B12 is to find out if you are deficient before doing a supplement. If needed, I may give myself a shot every 2 wks rather than taking a pill because I always forget to take my vitamins too and the B12 shot is pretty easy.

How did everyone do today?

I feel proud of myself. I took a huge green salad to the family reunion, fruit salad, steamed broccoli, tray of raw carrots and celery. I think someone else may be eating healthy too. There were baked sweet potatoes, without sugar and marshmallows, two other great salads, lots of raw veggies, as well as the traditional foods. I did eat one bite of ham and 4 bites of turkey, 4 bites of stuffing. 1/2 deviled egg. The rest was veggies, and I ate the fruit salad for dessert -- didn't even feel tempted by all those sweets, and I ended up feeling way too full, just on veggies.

Best of all, I don't have any sweets hanging around home as leftovers!

So, should we be taking a B12 tablet? If so, which brand do you take? I've never been good about taking vitamins, but I think I might be able to remember to take it if it is very important...

Today, I am thankful for many things, not the least of which is this team and Sparkpeople. Thanks everyone!

Thank you all! The outpouring of support is amazing - you all have made me feel SO much better and positive!

KAREN-4-KAREN - thanks for the suggestion of thegreensmoothygirl, I will check that out!

MAUITN - I asked, he mumbled a reply and I think he said about 3 hours nutrition.

KAREN-4-KAREN, MUDDER91, ARCHIMEDES2, WILD4STARS, JEN7541 - I think I will check with my insurance company to see what my options are. What I didn't mention is that I go to a teaching clinic. I've always thought of it as a really great thing, I get the benefit of seeing a resident who is fresh from learning and hopefully learning all the cutting edge, new information out there, tempered by the experienced doctors who are mentoring/evaluating the residents. The resident comes in and sees the patient, diagnoses or comes up with a plan for diagnosis based on patient's complaint, then leaves the room and goes to present it to the "bosses" (the full fledged practicing doctors) and then comes back to the room to finish up with the patient. It usually means a slightly longer appt. but I always thought it worthwhile because of the "doubled up care." What's particularly frustrating is that this resident has Type 1 Diabetes and has had it since he was a kid, so I would think he would be most interested in nutrition and anything else related! Anyway, I will check with my insurance company.

BOOKLADY3 - I think you make a very good point....I look at this sort of like being an alcoholic, when a person is a recovering alcoholic, they can't just go and have a drink because they've done "so well" for the last 6 months (or whatever) - they have to stay sober, not drink etc. Same with this, even if the diabetes is reversed, the same bad habits and possibly the genetic predisposition which got me here, still apply - so remission is a great way to look at it.

Thanks again all of you for your support, I feel much more positive!

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!

Woofgang, your doctor sounds like dolt! Stay the path -- you're doing great and you will see results. If you have the option of working with a naturopathic doctor instead of a "mainstream" one, you'll probably get someone more responsive to the changes you're making.

I downloaded ETL on my Kindle without waiting to go to the bookstore. However I may buy the book anyway so I can flip to the recipes without hassleing my Kindle to the right page.

Maybe if we said our diabetes is "in remission" doctors wouldn't fuss so about the word "cure". I'm not even to "remission" yet, but I know if I don't continue this life plan once I'm there, I'll be right back in the same obese (how I hate that word) overmedicated mess called diabetes.

Whatever you call it, remission or cure, the plan does work if we do the work. The word "cure" is so much stronger, and it doesn't make one feel so hopeless as the word "incurable disease" does. "Remission" admits that continual caution is necessary. It may all be a matter of semantics, but the difference in the words used to describe the situation can make a difference between hope and giving up.

I'm on Day 3, 2nd week. I'm down another lb. and my FBS has dropped to 140! here's to "cure" or "remission" happening sooner rather than later.

WOOFGANG - I'm going to add my vote to the rest of the group. Time for a new Dr. I would be tempted to ask him how many nutrition classes he had in med school. The answer would likely be NONE, therefore he is just giving you his personal opinion.

When we asked my husband's cardiologist if he recommended a particular diet to stop the progression of heart disease he gave us a copy of the cover of Dean Ornish's book which is a very low fat vegetarian diet. I asked him if this was the diet he followed, his answer - "No, I'm competely vegan, which would be even better." I know that's not an answer for a diabetic but the two go SO hand in hand, I have to believe he would have said the same.

When I told my Dr I was transitioning from vegetarian to vegan her response was to add a B12 test to my blood work to make sure I was getting enough. She also told me that if all her patients were as healthy as me she would be out of business. I'm just about the only 60 year old she knows that has never been on medication for ANYTHING.

Stand your ground, do what you know is right, and really consider finding a Doctor that supports your work to be healthy and drug-free. It's worth it!

I stay on my road and I don't change lanes.

Wow, Woofgang, that kind of reaction from your doctor is so out of date. I am amazed (although I guess I shouldn't be). First of all, it took 7 weeks for him to see you to even get you a glucose meter? That's crazy. I know a lot of Drs are on the fence (or maybe just thinking about getting on the fence) about reversing T2 diabetes, but this guy seems to have changed his tune when he realized you actually listened to him. (He is probably used to people saying, "Oh, yeah, good idea. I'll eat better." But then not doing it. You followed through, so now he has to back peddle?? )

I'm with Jana -- I think you need a new doctor if that's doable. You are absolutely on a good path. I have a co-worker (the person who introduced me to ETL) who is now off his diabetes meds completely and his blood sugar is lower and under better control than when he was on the meds (no insulin). It took him 2 months to be off completely. So it CAN happen.

Woofgang- it sounds like you need a new doctor. Your doctor should motivate you (granted with a dose of reality), not pull you down! Is it possible to change to a new doctor?

My son is home sick today. I guess my plans for the day have changed. Oh, well.

I love that all of Dr. Fís books were in such demand. Thanks ARCHIMEDES2.

WOOFGANG, it is such a shame that the majority of our doctors are so poorly educated about nutrition as it related to health.

ARCHIMEDES2: I am dancing the dance with you all about this wonderful turn of events. I'm certain that the recent "food" problems put the fear into them. It's about flippin' time, hey??

WOOFGANG: Personally if the Dr. doesn't support what you are doing and give you encouragement and is knowledgeable about healthy eating I'd tell him to take a hike! Type2 IS reversable and also Type1. Take a look at the website for THEGREENSMOOTHYGIRL.
This does not go against the ETL philosophy at all and we can modify it. We need masive amounts of micro-nutrients and greens to get our bodies into alignment with regaining our health. Hugs to you girlfriend. You are fighting the good fight.

I think this is the right place for general chit-chat and "venting" - if not, sorry in advance and please tell me where I should post it.

I went to the doctor yesterday for my follow up visit. It is 7 weeks past due since he was booked and this was the earliest I could get an appt., since it was not an emergency, I didn't push it. Now, when I went in for my diagnosis, maybe 8-10 wks ago, he very enthusiastically told me that "the good news is that Type II Diabetes is completely reversible with diet and exercise." That is what spurred me on to start the research into the various eating plans.

Yesterday, when I went back in, I was a) very proud of myself for finding a healthy diet and sticking to it, b) very proud of myself for the weight loss, and c) very optimistic about the D2 reversible potential and the lowering of my cholesterol as well. I won't get tested again until the end of January, but I'll pick up my glucometer today and will finally have some daily feedback at least.

The doctor said to me "Well, don't get too excited about reversing your diabetes, that really doesn't happen. We can control with diet, exercise and medication, but it's very rare that anyone reverses it. Your A1C was high and that is a 3 month average so it's unlikely you are going to be able to reverse it, especially considering your family history."

I was so disappointed to hear him say this. And to be honest, I was really caught off guard and didn't think to "call" him on it (last visit HE was telling me I could reverse it) so I was a little dejected after the appt.

I'm not going to let his negative comments deter me, now I'm bound and determined to prove him wrong, but at the same time, I realize if he is right, then eating this way is an absolute necessity to keep the problem from getting worse. But still, what a bummer. He also wasn't very positive about the ETL diet. Told me I need fat (told him I get it from nuts and flax seeds and chia seeds etc. etc.) Then he told me he worries about Vegans getting enough protein (legumes) and I really emphasized the "whole food, plant based" part of it, but he told me to eat steak once in awhile and not eat any fat (as if I ever did eat the fat pcs. off the steak anyway!) He wanted to know why I didn't want to eat meat anymore and I explained ecological reasons, humane reasons, and health reasons and he told me that was a bunch of propaganda. I finally decided to stop trying to convince him, I did suggest he read the ETL book. I'll do it my way for the next 3 months and then we'll see.

Sorry so long and whiny, just feeling a little down about the appointment and wanted to get it off my chest.

Good Morning all - (or Good afternoon or Good evening as applicable!) -
A friend of a friend was interested in the ETL diet style and wanted to get the ETL book. So she went to the Library system (covers all the public libraries in Rhode Island) to borrow it. It is currently out with *40* holds on it ahead of her. The Eat for Health book has 25 holds. All DrF's books had multiple holds.

So next, she went to the bookstore, and it was sold out. She called another bookstore, and it was sold out there, too. (She finally ordered it thru Amazon.)

I just thought it was really cool to see so much demand for this great info!

Good morning ladies. Sorry to disappoint all the meat eaters, including fish and fowl. I've been reading too many books and watching too many movies that made me sick to my stomach about the way our "food", especially the meat supply, is mishandled. NEVER AGAIN!

Between the tears and yucky feeling it scared me straight into 100% organic produce. I may be going through a detox today but I'd rather be doing that than eating a big-mac...YUCK!

Stay strong and we will get through this holiday as winners..not whiners about weight gain, bloating and headaches.

The cravings can strike at the most inopportune times. And when you've had an insubstantial and disappointing meal, those cravings come on strong. We've spent our whole lives building certain stress/reward pathways in our brains. It will take a while to build new ones. You're doing great though, and making adjustments as you go. That's what we need to do!

Yes, while we are now able to order vegetarian, what that means is often misunderstood. In this case the person in charge of choosing the conference luncheon menu probably thought it meant no red meat or fowl. We are making great strides lately as nutritionists and doctors are becoming aware of how much healthier a vegetarian/vegan diet is. Maybe more people will get a clue. Meanwhile I'd better tuck a fruit into my purse in similar situations. I didn't expect to be overwhelmed by such cravings just from one unsatisfactory meal! And after only one week on the plan!

Booklady, I have found the same thing. I get a smallish salad, or small pasta, or just a few grilled pieces of vegetable. And, whatís with the shrimp? I do understand if an individual wants to eat mostly vegetarian with some animal items as in Ovo-lacto, but to be given or served what purports to be vegetarian/vegan by a restaurant or caterer without asking is wrong.

Vegetarian, Vegan, it still means no animal product. Why is it that people do not understand that fish, cheese and eggs are animal products. I do understand if an individual wants to eat mostly vegetarian with some animal items, but to be given or served what purports to be vegetarian/vegan by a restaurant or caterer is a lack of wrong.

Thanks for the encouragement! I really need it right now.

At the luncheon today I was able to order a vegetarian meal. The problem was that it wasn't very substantial. We all had a small dinner size salad. When they brought my vegetarian entree, there were three slices of grilled squash, 1 slice of grilled sweet potato, and three grilled shrimp. It was a beautiful plate, artfully arranged, and delicious, but I was still hungry when I finished. So I ate a piece of wheat bread, then I ate the tiny chocolate mousse and the half strawberry it was garnished with (I left the tiny pastry shell). By the end of the two hour program, I had eaten several of the malted milk balls (three per package) that were strung around the table's centerpiece -- but-- I didn't eat the bite sized chocolate bars! I really had meant to take along some peanuts just in case, but forgot -- or I could have stashed a small apple in my purse. However, I will just be careful this evening. I grabbed an orange and some almonds as soon as I arrived home. I'm thinking beans and greens for supper.

Booklady, sometimes our bodies are slow to accept and settle into a different way of eating, but it sounds like you are doing well now.

Ellen, one of the beauties of this way of eating is that you donít count calories. You wonít die or starve. In fact, I believe that science has proven just the opposite. You add years to your life on reduced calories. But that is not what Fuhrmanís plan is about. It is all about getting the most nutrient dense foods. Is there something you are particularly concerned about?
