First week I lost 5 pounds then it is fluctuating between the same 2 and 5 pounds - but that is fine - at least there's some movement!

I've been listening to some youtube videos from Dr Fuhrman and it is helping with continued motivation. My digestive system is still trying to adjust to all of the fiber - it feels sluggish! Not a great feeling but I hope it passes soon. He indicated that the first 2 weeks you might feel crappy due to all of the changes - I definitely feel that! He also indicated that you might feel tired from all of the changes - I am feeling that, too. Although there's definitely some positive changes that I like, too: clear thought, an underlying sense of energy although my body is tired. I thought I'd share that in case others were feeling the same and needed to hear that I believe it's normal. Let's hang in there!

So far, I've been doing well. I feel more alert and I really love eating salads with fruit. I do take meds for Diabetes but by the time I see my doctor for my checkup I hope to see a substancial change.

You can't wait for motivation to strike; sometimes you need to dig deep into yourself and find the motivation on your own.

Down 5 pounds since January 2! I am so excited! I have only 15 more to go, so it's not like I've got a lot to lose. I have been trying to do this for over a year now, and giving up after 4 days. I have put my foot down this time and am ready to succeed because I know I have to have success to influence others to try it. 1.6 weeks down, 5.5 weeks to go!

I had some extra grains on Friday night - a bowl of cereal with almond milk and about 3 cups of popcorn popped in coconut oil. My splurge - fortunately, did not reflect anything on the scale.

You guys are great motivators to me - I'm glad we have a great team!

OMG, I was so bad yesterday.
I know we're not supposed to say "bad" so let me say I was off-program all day.
My scale berated me soundly this morning, so I promised it I would behave myself today.

Today is a brand new day with no mistakes in it!

Thanks so much for the suggestions. It helps to know others understand and have over come these issues. The kids are older and I LOVE the idea of them trying to fix me a ETL meal. : )

Congrats to all who are losing weight, feeling lighter and are healthier! I will not weigh until the end of the 6 weeks as my weigh tends to jump around from day to day and week to week. My mood tends to depend on the scale when I weigh a lot and I do not want to focus on weight as I have tons to lose and feel depressed if I feel I have not lost enough.

Happy weekend to everyone!

I've lost 3 pounds in a week - I really can't believe it! I am sticking close to the plan and really want this to be sustainable, too. I am really enjoying a big salad with various fruits and veggies in it, plus a few nuts. Eating a salad everyday for lunch in the winter is new to me - I always like hot food. It's amazing what you can do when you really set your mind to it! (My jeans were also VERY tight - so I knew I had to do something about it.)

I hope everyone has a great weekend! emoticon

Hi all, hope you all are doing well.

I had a very satisfying meal tonight. I made a veggie burger inspired by www.nomeatathlete.com/veggie-burger-
re
cipe/

It was success !! Even my DH and my teenage Son did like it! It is so hard to accommodate all of family member. But I think we need to be creative and also have some fun. (^^)

Sparksweeden - I know exactly how you are feeling about the others wanting to 'old' food. It makes it so tough for you to stick to your plan. A couple of ideas that I have used/ heard of over time.

I am not sure of the ages of those involved but whatever. Try and get them involved in the meal making process ~ a good idea is to let each person choose the meal one day per week and they have to help prepare it. They also have to pay attention to your needs on ETL. You can teach them how to make the meal healthier although not necessarily vegetarian. For example if someone wanted chicken nuggets you could slice up a chicken breast and use shake & bake and then oven bake it. Also home made oven fries are good instead of the deep fried. For you as an ETLer there would have to be a big salad or steamed veggies. Then you can add some chickpeas/beans or nuts to it. You could also have some oven fries.

A friend of mine used the veggie ground round instead of ground beef for her family when she made a spaghetti sauce or chili. She didn't tell them and hid the packaging - they loved it!!! I think most of them are made from tofu so all of you would be able to eat that meal.

I make a vegetarian chili using brown lentils instead of meat. Even meat eaters love it. Spark mail me if you'd like the recipe - it is ETL. Also I make a curry sauce to which you can add whatever you like to so for me I often add chickpeas and mushrooms and for meat eaters I would add some cubes of cooked chicken. This is easy to do at the last minute.

For burgers etc there are loads of vegetable burgers ready made in the stores or you can make your own. If the others want meat them it is easy to cook both types. Then you can have yours in a lettuce wrap (I use Romaine leaves) instead of a bun and the others can have buns.

I hope there are one or two ideas to help. I have been dealing with this since 1984 when my daughters went vegetarian - my late husband never did so I was cooking for both for many years.

If there are meals that they are wanting that you don't know how to adapt just ask as I may have some ideas. Another website you might want to check out is 100 days of real food - she has loads of ideas for making food healthy.

Good luck

Sparksweeden - I hear you! It is tough! I still cook many of the old foods for my family, too, but add more veggies and fruits at a meal to choose from. I also prepare various healthy grains from Bob's Red Mill brand and my 17 year old daughter has really enjoyed the change and really likes whole grain couscous and bulgar. That seems to work to satisfy them - along with their meat. So, I eat the same veggies but add more to satisfy me . Whatever is left over, is good for me the following day. I've gotten used to microwaving our veggies and not putting butter or seasoning on it, then everyone can add their own. No one even noticed when I stopped putting butter on them - I was surprised! They are getting healthier meals, and see me eating healthy, too.

I went to a staff meeting away from the office where 2 meals were prepared. I did the best that I could and felt like I made good choices!

Hi! Rough day around here. I'm the main cook here and I am making salads and soups and smoothies and I would love the family to join me and they just turn their nose up. They want me to make them the 'old' food and I am trying to be totally into the new food. I know it will take time for them to learn to like the new foods or to just eat them, but I could do with a few less grumbles, lol.

Since I've been drinking more water and herbal tea, my eyes seems to be swollen a bit in the morning. We have well water and use salt to soften it. Do you think that might be the cause?

I am so excited! I got on the scale this morning and I have lost 2 pounds! Yea!

We can do this!

Good morning all!
Just starting my day here and thought I'd drop by ... encourage everybody to do their best today and I will too!

Sparksweden - know what you mean about if it's bad for us it's bad for everyone. I look at what my husband eats (and of course what I used to) and I cringe a bit. He has no weight issues but I think about it healthwise and just hope he doesn't have future problems but I don't honestly see how. I also have some neighbors who are very very ill and we buy their food/deliver to them. I don't see how they will heal ... we have slowly been dropping hints about how I am eating and they did ask for a few veggies this week. It's hard to stand by and watch other people, friends, family eating 'junk' but they have to make the choice to change we cannot force it on them. I guess the best we can do is 'be the change' and visibly show them how our lives are becoming healthier - then maybe they'll get curious, ask, make some changes.

Frankly, right now, I alone am enough to deal with - ha! Making 'consistent' changes and choices - and hopefully permanent ones!

Have a good day everybody!

Hi! Thanks M...I find it hard to drink all the water I should in the cooler months. I will try to up the number of glasses I drink. No, no junk food. I tossed a bunch of holiday food this week. I thought about giving it away, but really, if it is bad for me, it is bad for everyone.

Day 32...

Aloha Everyone ...

I've been out of pocket for a few days but have caught up reading posts here. From one who has been doing this challenge for a while my best advice would be try to stick to it as much as possible and your success will be much sweeter. The holidays got me off track much as I had intended to not do that and it's been quite a 'challenge' to get back on track.

My weigh in days fall on Saturday - I weighed and had lost 1 lb. But I had regained 5 during Christmas ... and no telling how much on my recent splurge the last two days. I can't help wondering how much further I would have been had I not just stuck to the PLAN! ha!

All one can do is keep trying ...

Jane - I copied your curry recipe - will be trying it out tonight! Sounds delish!

Best to everybody ... stick to the plan! (do as I say - not as I do - ha!)...

I've listened to Dr. Fuhrman's youtube video on Toxic Hunger several times to motivate me to continue eating this way and not to give in to temptation. It helps! Beans, too, help in curving cravings. It seems weird but it helps!

I haven't lost any weight yet but I'm still holding strong on the 6 week challenge. Anyone else have that problem? I am not feeling constipated but not going as much as I think I should - I'm thinking that my body is still readjusting to this way of eating. Anyone else experiencing this? (I'm hoping that is also why I haven't lost any weight.)

Hi! Finding it hard to get in all the fruit and veggies. I feel like I am eating all day long to get it all in. But I fear if I do not load up on the suggested amount of good food, my body/head will urge me to want/eat junk. And now to go chop veg for tomorrow before I go to bed. Hope everyone is doing well!

Squirrelmomma1: berries are definitely allowed and encouraged. I was just disappointed because they obviously added quite a bit of sugar to them, which isn't allowed.

For motivation, I google youtube videos Dr. Fuhrman has and listen to them while surfing the web or cleaning house. I also check out the Eat to Live reviews on Amazon. There's so many positive reviews that I figure, if they can do it, I can do it!

Good morning everyone.

The book says all fresh fruits are fine, frozen is ok as long as there is no added sugar. Canned fruit is not as nutritious and often has sugar added. Dried fruits only in very small amounts for sweetening. Hope this helps. emoticon

I had a good day yesterday - there is nothing left around the house to tempt me. emoticon It really helps.

TodayI am going to make a big pot of vegetarian chili and some dhall ( lentil curry). Then I can freeze some for when I don't feel like cooking but I want something warm and comforting.

If I am going to be able to do this long term I have to have variety. emoticon emoticon emoticon

CHAZMO227, I don't remember the book saying you couldn't have berries. I buy strawberries and blackberries each week and have always just considered them a fruit. And we can have 4 fruits a day. Am I doing something wrong here? Sure hope not because my whole week has been nothing but greens, beans and fruit. Tell me if I got it wrong.

This year is all about me and my quest to unload this extra person I have been hauling around.

Day 4 for me.
I think the cravings are fading. *phew*

It helps that there is no leftover junk food in the house, and I've been kind of snowed in. I confess that during the worst of the cravings, I'd find myself in the kitchen searching for bad carbs. Yes, I knew I wasn't hungry. Each time I thought "What the heck I am doing? Oh... cravings. It will pass." And I went to do something else. Did some de-cluttering, and played some Epic Mickey (I am not good at video games at all!)

So I'm feeling pretty confident that the worst is over. Total is supposed to be warm, so I'm coming out of hiding to do some grocery shopping. then I'll do some cooking for the week.

Good luck everyone!

I went to Sams Club and they had a bunch of free samples. Unfortunately I was really hungry so I gave into temptation. I was disgusted when I tried some berries and they were loaded with sugar. I am considering it a minor detour - I felt so bad, physically, after my deviation from the 6 week challenge that it will be seared in my memory! I listened to a youtube video from Dr Furhman today and he said that it typically takes a week for symptoms of toxic hunger to subside - so don't be worried if you don't feel the greatest this first week.

We can do it!

As for my 6 week challenge, I am struggling with my carb craving and crush. I am considering start fresh from Monday. Hope everyone else is doing great. Good luck.

Here is the recipe I use. It is not strictly ETL. You do need a little oil to bring out the flavours of the spices in the curry powder. I usually Pam the bottom of the pot and then add just a little oil. Each serving has very little oil.

CURRY SAUCE

1 large onion, chopped
1 clove garlic. chopped
1 teaspoon olive oil (I know this is not strictly ETL)
1 heaped tablespoon curry powder (mine is Madras)
2 or 3 chopped tomatoes or 2 teaspoons of tomato paste
salt & lemon juice to taste

***************************************

Fry onion and garlic in oil for 2 -3 minutes.

Add curry powder and fry for a further 3 -4 minutes over low heat

Add the tomatoes or tomato paste. Mix well and add a little water to make a thick gravy.

Simmer for 15 minutes.

Add chickpeas and other cooked veges and warm through.

Add salt (or not) and lemon juice to taste

Congratulations to everyone for keeping going - it does get easier. Today is Day 26 for me. I was wanting more variety and I remembered some strategies that I have used in the past.

I decided to try cooking dry chickpeas in my slow cooker (I usually use canned). It was so easy and so cheap. I am going to freeze some in 2 cup portions so that I will have them on hand - no more cans for me.

Looking for something different for dinner I made a curry sauce and added some of my chickpeas plus some other cooked veggies then instead of pouring it over a bed of rice I used coleslaw mix out of a bag so that I had extra veggies. The curry sauce coats the raw cabbage and makes it really tasty and satisfying.

I also remembered that I used to use grated raw cauliflower with a little finely chopped onion as instead of rice when having a curry - this also works well.

Day 2 for me. I'm doing well! I've never chewed so much in my life but I am not hungry at all - I love it! It's super cold here and it's tempting to eat some comfort food but I really do not want to...I am bound and determined to succeed and lose some weight. Keep up the good work, everyone!

This is Day 3 for me. I've been adding in some beans with my salad and that really helps. And all that fruit! Wow I've never eaten so much fruit in a day before. But I like it emoticon

I know what you mean, I feel hollow if I have a big salad and no starch. I need to experiment with other things that would settle my salad tummy.

Thank you Jane.
Yes, it make sense for portion control. I don't have to have it but some time when I eating salad, it's nice to have thin crunchy whole grain bread. (^^)

Hi Mickey
The 6 week plan allows 1 cup cooked starchy vegetable OR whole grain once a day. The book says you can have bread as this choice but to be very careful on portion size as it is not as nutrient dense as starchy vegetables.

I guess the answer is yes, occasionally.

Sounds like everyone is doing well. (^^)

Day 1 for me and started with my morning treadmill exercise. I was able to do 3 mile walk this morning. Whoot whoot!! After exercise I had my usual veggie power smoothie consist of Romain, Spinach, celery, kiwi, blueberry and almond milk. Some time I put plant fusion protein powder if I want extra boost but not this morning. Lunch was large salad and black eye pea. Dinner will be mushed plantain/yuca with garlic and green onion with drop of lime/vineger.
Romain based salad.

Does anyone know this 6 week plan allow us a small piece of a whole grain bread? Like one we can buy at Costco artisan whole grain bred? Thanks.

Day 27 -
Good to see more people joining the challenge!

Today is going well ... I walked 32min/3,675steps/1.73 mile ... starting to get back to my old pace. Will be glad when I can increase my time but I started off a few weeks back only able to do 10 min so things are improving. They really will improve when I manage to walk (or do some other exercise) daily - ha!

Today's food:
Breakfast - banana and papaya
Lunch - dry green pan stir fry: bok choy, red bell pepper, onion, eggplant, fresh spinach with 2 soy sausage patties crumbled in and spiced up with garlic and lemon pepper; grape tomatos on the side and a banana
Dinner - pumpkin bean chili and a fresh spinach salad with purple onion, tomato, mushrooms, pineapple chunks, red kidney beans and basalmic vinegar; papaya

Saturday I will be weighing in ...

I'm weaned off my coffee entirely now. I'm going to wean off my 'black' tea - going to green and herbal - started this last week and it's going well.

Sounds like everyone is putting forth a good effort!

Day 25.

Thursday is my weigh in day and I was not sure what to expect. I had followed the program fairly well in the 2 weeks before Chritstmas and had lost 6.8 pounds. But Christmas feasting happened and I know I gained some back but there was no weigh in on Boxing Day so I had time to work on it. Anyway I was exactly the same as my last weigh in before Christmas so I was really pleased.

Now I am seriously back at it .
Breakfast - banana, almonds, mandarin orange
Lunch - veggies ( carrots, celery, red pepper) with hummus + grapes
Dinner will be homemade bean/ lentil/vegetable soup - it's cooking as I type.

Hope everyone is having a good day - it is pouring with rain here but at least we don't have to shovel it.
