Hi Andrea, glad you are here.

Gail, best wishes for a Happy Hanukkah. Hope your dinner goes well. You will have to let us know what was on the menu.

I am a little more awake than I was last night at this time, and a little less hungry. So I think I may be able to eventually stay in my calorie range. And, I did exercise and strength training for tonight. Have a good night everyone!

Hey everyone! I have been a member of SP and this team for quite a while, but I kind of lost my Spark for a couple of months.

I am glad that I am back at it and there is a 100 Day Challenge starting tomorrow to kick it off!!!

Just wanted to stop by and say hey to my fellow Sconnies! xoxox -Andrea

emoticon Stopping in to say good-morning & to welcome all the new folks I see joining in.. emoticon

On todays TO DO list: Strength Training, of which I have a new video I want to test, then I'm making soup - broccoli, and later a pot pie? for dinner, + a few chores that need doing around the house.

Kathleen, so glad your husband found work! What a Godsend.. I wish him, and you well!

April, January will be here soon enough.. hang tight!

Kudos on the elliptical work Gail! IIRC, 30 minutes is not so easy on one of those machines.

Jeanette, YUCK!! is right.. what a sight that had to be. emoticon Hope it was still a great run though!

Hope everyone has a great day (sans the snow dusting) & finds at least a few minutes for yourself and exercise!

Morning! Today I have a DDS cleaning. I ran up to Portage yesterday to sit with my friend who is recovering from knee surgery. While up there I visited my Aunt who is in ICU for Septicemia, cellulitis and after that is taken care of she will need surgery on her knee. She is 63 and this is her first time in the hospital. My tummy was really hurting after I got home so today I am going to take it easy. I have to get a few groceries but then I'm home to make SP applesauce oatmeal muffins and figure out what to make for supper.

I have been doing ok with food. Not overboard but not doing enough to lose weight. I'm really getting antsy about working out. I am not allowed to do much until Jan. 1st. :{ Luckily I have some personal training sessions banked so my trainer will get me back in shape quickly. I think I should save some of my pain medication for that.

Have a great day!

Welcome Dan...I know I too had a hard time with Thanksgiving..too much food....and my good intentions at moderation went out the window.

Wanted to check in an remind all you Mad City Sparkers of the 100 Day Challenge that officially starts tomorrow. Lots of folks have signed up already and I personally look forward to 100 days ahead! I am hoping that we can do this challenge and then sign up for the Shamrock Shuffle in March 2010...

Have a wonderful day today and welcome December!

Good Morning:

Got a busy day ahead. First there's my annual "woman's" exam, and immediately after a timebank meeting. I'll try to get to the gym after lunch. We went yesterday and I did 31 minutes on the elliptical. There is such a feeling of accomplishment after I've worked out.

My plan is to get started on the Hanukkah dinner for tomorrow night. I'll be defrosting stuff from the freezer and setting up the table.

BTW, for Thanksgiving I brought raw vegetables and made a spinach dip. There was so much food that I brought a lot home. Well, since then I've been snacking on the veggies and dip when I get hungry in the afternoon or evening. It's satisfying, tasty and healthy. I eat as many veggies as I like (green pepper, celery and carrots) but only allow myself 1/4 C of dip. Actually, all in all, my food has not been bad. I've also taken to drinking a cup of warm milk with 1 t. of honey.

I wish you all a happy day.

Dan: Welcome to our team. I look forward to your postings.

I'm with you Dan -- too much merrymaking (and eating) over the last 3 days! Now I'm ready to get back on the wagon. It didn't help that there was a work potluck today for someone's retirement party.

Thanks for the good wishes on DH's job -- by the way Gail, he works at Madison Newspapers. He used to be a professor, but times change. Now he runs a machine. I am very grateful.

It's kind of nasty out tonight. I just got back from piano lesson. I even drove myself. Luckily it wasn't the white stuff (yet).

Have a good night everyone.

Wow, I glad thanksgiving is over. I've done good with SP until then. Last 3 days spent at Chula Vista eating, drinking and being marry. Today I will get back on track.
Thank you everyone for your welcoming me to this team. I plan on being an active part here.

Good Morning:

Well, Emily, you inspired me and yesterday I wrote several Hanukkah and Christmas cards. I've many to go but have done 17 in all. It's a good start. Today and every day moving forward I'll go through my address book and do some.

My shoulder was killing me yesterday and after I finished sanitizing I didn't do anything productive. I didn't exercise, and felt bad about that. I'm feeling better now and will have some breakfast and then trot off to the gym and to run a few errands.

Enjoy the day everyone.

If I had a memory I would be more specific here for all the news, but the things that have stayed in my head the best are Kathleen's hubby's job (yay!) and Rita's run (congrats).
I too ran this am, and learned a new lesson. If you run down an alley near campus the day after a Badger game you might get to see a young man puke his guts out over a outdoor porch railing. YUCK!!!!!
Otherwise all is well with me.

Good Morning:

I met with my Spark friend and her mother yesterday and we had lunch in a very typical Wisconsin eatery that is especially known for its cheeses. It is located on the square in Monroe. The Green County courthouse is something to see. You feel like you've stepped into the past. Have any of you been there?

We had a nice lunch and visit and I was able to stay sober with my eating. It was good to meet my Spark friend face to face. That's something very special.

My left shoulder was killing me yesterday when I returned home and I took some ibuprofen and rested a while. I was still in too much discomfort to finish cleaning and I'll try to finish up today. My shoulder still isn't good and I fear I will have to go back to those exercises.

Next week will be very busy what with Hanukkah preparations, holiday cards to write, annual physical, and timebank meetings.

Wishing you all a restful Sunday.

Rita it is so awesome you were able to run w/o asthma problems. Woo Hoo!

Kathleen I'm so happy your hubby is empoyed again. That must feel great especially this time of the year. I think putting up Christmas on a birthday is an awesome way to celebrate!

Today I worked on my Christmas cards. I'm in the home stretch now with them so I'm excited. I did venture out to grab some yarn for my friend who has depleted her Walmart of their yarn. I was happy to see that there weren't very many people at Walmart this morning. I found a couple gifts while I was there. Then I came home and took a couple pain pills. That made for some intersting Christmas cards :} Yeah Badgers! Tomorrow I'll be crocheting and watching the Packers.

Kathleen: I didn't realize your husband had been unemployed. How wonderful that he is now working again. What does he do?

I'm meeting a Sparker from IL at noon. We are meeting in Monroe, WI for lunch. That is very exciting.

The last two days have not been good for food but I did lose 1.5 to 2 pounds this week. Also, I have been exercising every day, even for just 15 minutes, like yesterday when I was very pressed for time.

Enjoy the weekend.

Hi everyone,
Thanksgiving went well for us, I made all SP recipes, and they were well received. Everyone got along and we have much to be grateful for. My DH is employed at last, that is the biggest one for me.

We will put up our CHristmas stuff after Dec 9 which is my daughter's birthday. So it is kind of an in-between time for us right now.

I got up at 4:40 a.m. which for me is early these days. I am remembering how nice it is to have energy early in the a.m. and get some things done. I ran the dishwasher and did some knitting and journaling. Then DH came home from his long night shift. Now it is just getting light. It is a magical time.

Hope everyone has a very fine Saturday.

Achieved another first today, I ran a quarter mile in 3 minutes! That I ran a quarter mile at all is quite an achievement since my whole life, up until this past year - revolved around keeping Asthma under control. That I ran this far today, with NO meds or the need for an inhaler is such a BIG deal to me, my heart is singing! I AM getting strong, busting out of those rusty old chains and mental road blocks & it feels amazing.

In a little while.. I'll be back at work, on the stationary bike & hope to get another hour of exercise under my belt. Who'd have thunk I'd ever get excited to exercise? But I am! Annnd.. I hope you are too!

Create in your mind a vision, see yourself as you want to be next summer.. then set in place the steps you need to get there, and do it. No excuses. YOU have the power. YOU are what makes your dreams real. YOU can and will succeed so long as you believe in the beauty of your dreams & in yourself.

I did pretty good Thanksgiving. A couple years ago I told myself I wasn't going to have 2nds on anything other than raw veggies. I've stuck to it. So I didn't eat until I was over stuffed. I don't think that would have been very wise anyway since my stomach mucles are still stitched up. But we spent the day at Don's parents house. Nice small gathering, watching football and looking through the adds. I'm glad I didn't see anything worth getting up early for. Today Don and I put up our Christmas stuff. Now I'm relaxing and he is wood carving.

Thank you for your Happy Thanksgiving wishes. I am very thankful for such a great team. You are all such an inspiration to me and I'm so happy to have found you.

Gail - that is such a nice tradition!

Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. Pretty relaxing for us. I ran the Berbee Derby in the morning (TOUGH race!!) and we hit up Cracker Barrel for dinner. We don't have family close to us, so it was just me, DH, and DS, but we had a nice low-key kind of dinner. As for Black Friday, I'm here at the office, working, but it is a ghost town and I would be really shocked if I heard from any of my clients today!!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Good Morning:

Our Thanksgiving custom is to read the "thankful" notes that all have written after dinner. This year we all have so much to be thankful for. My husband is in remission and our sil's mom is doing very well and they are cutting her chemo short. Everyone in the family is in good health and good marriages or relationships. Finally, everyone who is not retired or in school is gainfully employed. In these times all these blessings are huge.

A wonderful weekend for you all.

Hey everyone! I hope you all have a great holiday. We aren't doing anything in particular, so I will be kicking around SP all weekend, probably.

Yesterday, I ran a personal best mile- not fast, but impressive for me- I went 1.1 miles in 11 minutes.
After that, I rehydrated quick and headed to the gym for about 75 minutes of yoga (the class keeps going over the scheduled 60 minutes) and came home to a nice dinner with my family.

I will kick off Thanksgiving by having a prerun breakfast provided by my gym, then heading over to the course to warm up- then running 5K. I am not going to win by any stretch. My personal goals are to finish under 40 minutes and to run the whole thing. After that, a nice soaky bath and lunch out with the family somewhere.

I hope everyone's Thanksgiving is filled with blessings and love.

I'm so proud of myself because I exercised again today and am still logging my food. I've been pushing myself to get serious about diet and exercise and am trying to develop new habits.

I went to the grocery today to pick up some items for the holiday feast. My daughter loves to "do it all" for Thanksgiving, so who am I to say no. LOL I will be bringing spinach dip and veggies and a pumpkin pie.

Wishing you all a wonderful holiday.

I saw my surgeon yesterday. She is very happy with how the incision is healing. My tummy muscles will hurt for a while yet. I am able to start doing a little walking and stationary bike but I'm still limited in weights and no core work for another 4-6wks so they have time to heal after being sewn together. But even after 2 weeks I think I look awesome! For the first time I can look in the mirror and not see a fat person but more of a healthy person. It feels great! Today I'm doing a little Christmas shopping and card making. Ya'll have a great day!

Well, I finally got my house cleaned and everything from the trip has been put away. My sleeping hours are still off kilter.

I was REALLY hungry about 2am last night. I went down and took a warm cup of skim milk with 1 tsp of honey. That tided me over till breakfast. I did ok in the morning but got hungry again for lunch. We just finished and I ate a lot, but nothing that wasn't healthy and lean and I did not go over the calorie limit. There are still a lot of calories left for dinner.

I was going to go to the gym today but may pass. I washed floors on my hands and knees and figure that has to count for something, right?

Hope you are all well and are enjoying your day.

I'm glad you won't be doing this alone - it's not only helpful to have friends along but it makes the journey that much more fun, and trust you'll also be able to draw on the strength of others too, should it really become a challenge. I'll be sending you LOTS of strength waves & wishes for an AWESOME experience!

Ahh, Thanksgiving week is upon us & the temptations are merely a matter of time. Let's not quit on ourselves. I will do everything in my power to stay to course, to dig down deep & not cave to over-indulgence. I'm telling myself if I want to eat a bit more than usual, it will be okay 'provided' I EARN it first. I think I can live with that. I hope.

Hope everyone had a great weekend & is prepared for the week ahead. It promises some good eats, and more - additional opportunities to love our body & treat it right! I suspect T & I will be putting the extra time off from work to good use - by exercising together & hope you'll consider doing the same with your loved ones too.

The kids' house is six miles from us by bike, and mostly on bike path. Of course we drove yesterday! The indoor farmers market is at Monona Terrace from 7:30-noon every Saturday from now until Christmas. Then it moves to the senior center across from the downtown library. We go year round. There is still tons of fresh produce available.
I ran this morning and had something small happen that made me feel hugely good. I try very hard to squelch the image I have of myself when I run as a laboring, pudgy, old lady. This morning I ran behind a slender man. We started out with about a city block or .less between us, and after about two miles or maybe a little less, I had almost caughtnup to him. I wasn't trying to, that was just my pace. The thing about it that made me feel hugely good was that he didn't look like he was laboring, just running at a steady, easy pace. It just helped my view of myself. I still sweat like crazy, I'm not any younger, but maybe I don't look quite as unfit as I thought.

Good Morning:

I just finished catching up with your postings for the month. Good God...it takes a while. I will just handle one team at a time.

Janey: Great job on the TM. Like you, I decided to start from square 1 and did so yesterday. We went to the gym and I only did 15 minutes on the elliptical, but I also did a grocery run, sanitized the upstairs of the house, changed bed linens, and did laundry and ironing. I figure that has to count for something. Better still, I got in 9 glasses of liquid yesterday (milk, herbal tea, coffee and water) and logged my food. I need to get in more veggies and fruit. Hoping today will be better.

Emily: I was so sorry to hear you are frustrated at work. Too much or short deadlines? Hope things improve. I want to congratulate you on your 2.25 mile run earlier this month. I really admire people who can run. I've got to start the way Jet did, walking and running. Are you all better from your ailments?

Ape: I'm so happy your surgery went well and that you are recovering nicely. Your husband really takes such good care of you and that is a great blessing. Hope things get back to normal very soon so that you can resume your active life style.

Raeven: What was your handle the last time you were with us? I was so sorry to hear that you are going through difficult times. Hope things turn around for you very soon.

Jet: Where is that indoor farmers' market? I didn't know we even had one here in Madison. Good luck to your son and his girlfriend on their new home. How exciting!

Soph: Your idea for activities sounds great. Unfortunately, I'm a real klutz at sports and would be a hindrance to myself and others. I belong to a health club but don't take any classes. I've tried, but I stand out like a sore thumb and it's very embarrassing. I consider myself a success if I can get in solo exercises.

Christina: How's your son doing? You haven't spoken about him in a while. I hope he is doing well. As for work, it sounds so draining working two weeks with no days off. Are you back to days now?

Kathy: How are you doing now? Are you getting more rest? How is your husband doing? Has he joined Spark?

---------

My trip had many wonderful moments, but I spent a lot of time "white knuckling" it. We rented a car and drove all over...well, Vic drove all over. That was a good thing. If I had been driving the car would have looked like an accordion after 45 minutes. The Italians are wonderful people but THEY ARE INSANE BEHIND THE WHEEL. Go to Italy and enjoy it, but take trains or buses. I'll be writing a blog about this driving experience.

We walked around a lot and one day we went to a tiny town on the west coast. To get to the main square I climbed 300 steps...steep steps! Steps are very hard for me so it was quite an experience. I got a lot of exercise that day.

I didn't pay strict attention to my food when I was on vacation, but it wasn't much of a problem with all the walking we were doing. I never stuffed myself and tried to make sensible choices.

Well, I've got to get going. Need to wash floors, get to the gym and run a couple of errands.

Enjoy the day everyone.

Gail

Welcome home Gail, looking forward to hearing all about your trip!

Good morning ladies, anyone exercising today?

Emily, I saw you ran the Berbee Derby course yesterday (kudos!), will you be running in next weeks race?

How exciting about the new house Jeanette, will your son & his lady be moving someplace close to you?

Hope you're enjoying your weekend Kathleen & April (I can't believe you're already out & about - WOW!).

I have plans to walk today but with a lack of good sleep last night (DH had a bad dream, lucky me was mistaken for the 'bad guy' & got slugged in my sleep & have been up ever since), realize the goal I've set for myself is going to be a little tougher now. Oh well.. maybe I'll nap when I get back home.

Making Whole Wheat Pumpkin Pancakes for breakfast, from a new recipe I found online. Guess I should get to it. Anyone else working on incorporating any new foods, or recipes into their diet for fall/winter? Would love to hear about them!

I too am glad you had a good trip, Gail!
Busy weekend here. We got to the farmers market early to pick up our turkey and Thanksgiving trimmings. Now I'm doing laundry, baking, and have a few little errands to run before we help our younger son and his girlfriend move into their new house. I have seen pictures of the interior, and biked by the exterior. Can't wait to see inside in person!

Welcome Back Gail!!! So glad your trip was enjoyable. Traveling always takes a lot of energy, so I am glad it was worth it! Best wishes getting re-acclimated to the home turf.

My daughter is busy this weekend, but I am not so busy, just a haircut, few church things and strength training. I am working on a vision collage journal for SP that I hope to finish today. Looks like a nice enough day out.

Dear Friends:

Right now I'm still suffering from exhaustion brought on by jet lag and sooo many hours of traveling. I just wanted to stop by and say hi. The trip was great and I'm so glad I got to see the Amalfi coast of Italy.

Right now I'm putting things away. I've lots of laundry and cleaning to do but just unpacking, and sorting laundry is all I can manage. I imagine it will take a few days before I can get back to posting and catching up on everyone's news.

I drove for the first time yesterday. My workout team had a training session so I went to cheer them on. I didn't have much pain but after I got home I did have to rest. Today I have some unavoidable errands so I hope to get those over with by noon so I can take it easy the rest of the afternoon. I am reading a book and the main character was attacked and the chapter ended with "Well, it was a good fight and now I'm going to die". I usually only read a chapter before bed so I don't keep reading and then don't get any sleep. Well, just when I WANTED to continue to read I had taken a pain pill and I couldn't. So along with you Emily I was plagued with strange dreams all night! I woke up with Don's alarm and started reading again for a bit just to see if she was dead or not....she didn't die but she wasn't saved by the good guys right away either. :}

Yesterday was a tiring one! I went to see the surgeon to get my drains removed. They were very pleased with how it looks. Riding in the car from East to Middleton was not painful but achey. I spent the rest of the day resting from my outdoor adventure! The adventure part was giving my mom directions! The only thing I have on my plate today is making tuna noodle casserole for supper. and walk a Thank You card to my neighbors. I hope you feel back to normal soon Emily.

How funny that I cam home to an email with the above link in it! I have read the first two books she mentions, own the next two but have not read them, and I've seen the movie of the last one. Looks like the woman suggesting the books also writes historical fiction.
I have to figure out where some of the schools having rumba classes are located, and if I can get to them. I wish there was a class at Hoyt.

I picked up 3 books, all coincidentally - historical fiction. The one I'm currently reading is a newly released book called The Hittite by Ben Bova - a new author for me. An interesting read so far but lacking in depth. The 2nd is by an author I've read before & enjoyed, Barbara Wood. This book is called The Blessing Stone. The 3rd is Eve by Elissa Elliott (also unknown to me). I chose this book because it reminded me of another I had once read.. Anita Diamonts book The Red Tent, as I scanned it.

Let me know what you think about Zumba!

Sorry Jeanette, I didn't see your post until after a trip to the library. I managed to find 3 books to sink my mind into & am much enjoying one of them already. I will make note of the books you recommended & look into them - thanks!

Glad to hear you're mending quickly April! April, in the new MSCR magazine, they're offering Zumba classes (in January) at several locations. I'm trying to make up my mind (read: find the nerve) about the one that's offered at 4p. Here's the MSCR online site, in case you want to learn more - once there, open the program guide (its a PDF) & the Zumba classes are on page 37: www.mscr.org Hmm, maybe a group of us could do this as a team too this winter?

Thanks Jet,Raven and Rita. My surgery went really well and didn't require an overnight stay, yeah! I had been taking the encouraged walks around the house..glad I have a teeny house! I am improving every day. I haven't had to take pain pills for two days...until today. Some orange juice went down the wrong tube, I was making all kinds of noises trying to dislodge it w/o coughing. Well the sounds I was making sounded to rediculous that I ended up trying not to laugh and cough. Later on a sneeze snuck up on me out of nowhere and boy that did it. No damamge just feels like I did an hours worth of sit ups. But now I am better emoticon

I am surfing on my netbook quite a bit while in the chair. Hope you all had a great day. Glad to hear you are feeling better Emily. My sis does Zumba at the Princeton Club. I wish my club offered one during the day time. The paid tv commercials make it sound like tons of fun!

Books....I'm reading A.S. Byatt's The Children's Book. she wrote Possession also. It's sprawling for sure, and I'm enjoying it. You would think I could come up with huge list of suggestions, but the only other thing that comes to mind is to suggest Jane Austen, or go to the library website. They have lists of new fiction, bestsellers, etc.
Not sure when dinner is, as the Mr. Is supposed to be cutting up a squash for me. It will be a stew of squash, carrots, potato, kale, onion, tomato, Ginger, curry, and coconut milk with baked tofu and garbanzo beans over rice or some grain.

We do have a walk planned at the arb at 10am tomorrow morning ... if it doesn't rain...

Any takers?

Welcome back April! So glad to hear all went well & that you're already home & on the mend. I'm sure Don is an excellent nurse & is taking very good care of you. Listen to him, let him feed & pamper you & before you know it, you'll be ready to walk & exercise again.. so keep those sneakers handy!

Slept in this morning, with it being so rainy & drab outside, it felt really good. 'Thinking' about exercising later. but am also feeling a little hesitant since I've noticed its causing me some trouble right now when I do.. I really do need some answers.

Looking for some new reading material.. almost all caught up on Evanovichs books & amm burnt out on med & diet type books. I feel ready to sink my teeth into something new.. something I could get lost in, and will wonder about when not reading. An epic novel that'll be hard to put down. Any suggestions?

emoticon to Raeven, Emily & Jeanette (and anyone else I may have missed). An indoor farmers market with lots of colorful, healthy veggies sounds so good on a day like today! What time's dinner? emoticon

Have a great day all.. oh, & uh - emoticon Go Badgers!

April, Let me add my good wishes for further and healthy recovery.
I too prefer snow to rain. I like to walk in snow, and snowshoe. I wish I were more coordinated and could cross country ski.
We went to the first indoor farmers market. All those colorful veggies are even more beautiful inside somehow. We came home with a lot!!!

April,
I'm glad to hear your surgery went well and your recovering so quickly. emoticon

I'm sitting here sort of moping around. Rainy, gloomy days do not work for me. I'd rather have the snow. At least it's bright.
Yesterday I moped all day. I took a nap, read a book, and goofed off by doing nothing.
Today I'm going to do some art, watch a movie and maybe, just maybe, if I get my mindset right I'll work out. I give you all a LOT of credit when you work out no matter the weather. That is my biggest challenge.

HI GANG!
My surgery went well and even with it just being performed Monday it looks great! There is a bit of pain involved but each day it is a little less. I'm hoping the memory of recovery will stay with me and help me eat healthy and not stray to the dark side. :} Thank you to all who wished me well and kept the positive thoughts coming. I'm at that point in recover where my insides want to do more than my body can or should. Don is home with me all this week so he is being a great nurse and making sure I behave and don't over do. I'll check in with you all again. Have a great day!

Snow coming...eek! Noooooo! As far as I'm concerned, it can stay away as long as it needs to. Hopefully it won't come to pass, at least just yet.

TGI almost Friday! I am so ready for the weekend. I basically just worked two weeks straight without a day off (due to traveling for a project I was working on)...so hooray for the weekend!!
