Thanks for the explanation. I have a hard time with the ballroom sections of this competition. I've never danced it and have never watched a true competition of it, so I don't always know how to critique it. The technique used, although sometimes overlapped, usually is different. I really appreciated reading your explanation of the different ballroom styles.

Irish,

Tango is considered a "smooth" ballroom dance even though the music and history of it is latin.

For ballroom, smooth dances travel - go around floor and have a flow to them. You are, usually, constantly moving. Waltz, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep, Tango, Argentine Tango and Samba are all considered smooth ballroom dances.

Latin dance are the ones that are more static in floor position. I don't mean they *don't* travel, but the travel is not inherent in the basic moves of the dance. Rhumba, Cha-cha, Swing (in it's many incarnations), Jive are all latin.

And, while samba is technically a smooth dance because of the travel, it incorporates more of the latin styling than tango does. Mainly in the hip action.

As for her dress, that was distrating ME - and I was just watching it. Very, very intense and very well danced on her part. While the tango may not be his style of ballroom, ANY ballroom dancer will (well, should) have better partnering skills than any not trained in ballroom.

I am a lone vote but I actually prefer when the judges have the final decision. They are more knowledgeable and usually base their decisions on overall performance rather than who ended up with the best choreography for that week. I liked the first year where America voted but then the judges could override the vote and send home the lesser talented performers.

Personally, I wasn't happy with Bianca going home. I don't think that would have happened if America had been voting. I was doubly upset that 2 tappers went home, especially after hearing about the guy losing his father. Talk about a bad week!

I agree that Legacy & Kathryn's dance was the best. I'm liking Mollie more each week, & it doesn't hurt that she has such a cute, talented partner.

Hey All,
I'm new to this group and have been a HUGE fan of the show since we got satellite a couple of years ago.
I'm super lucky because I'm Canadian so get to see (but not vote) the U.S. version as well as the Canadian version (and I vote like mad for my faves), which ended the day before the U.S. season 6.
I didn't realize that Adam was a permanent judge now, but I LOVE him and the fact that he's there every week. WOOT!
Fave dance of last night was Legacy and Kathryn's Stacey Tookie number. In fact, Stacey is one of my fave choreographers on the show. She's done both the US and CND shows and every time they dance one of her choreos, it's simply fantastic!

I agree with you Rajah on Adam being a great new permanent addition- that falling off his chair was perfection! Also on the group numbers - they are my favorite parts!

I also agree with Maki that there's something off in the choregraphy- especially the contemporary, where the moves are just echoes of previous years. The only choreographers I know I can consistently count on to blow me away are Mia and Sonia (both sadly missed last night) and usually Wade.

I personally LOVED Wade's number last night and didn't get the "controversial" comment. I thought it was brilliant conceptually & perfectly staged & danced. The moving backdrop was a little distracting, though.

I, too, wish Bianca could have stayed. She always brings an exciting, charismatic energy to her numbers... I really preferred her solo as well, as being totally refreshing and unpredicatable for tap (also a former tap dancer, never near her level).

Well unfortunately for some reason I'm not really too much into the show this season so I didn't watch the whole thing. I will only comment on the 2 dances I actually saw.

Kevin/Karen- I loved Tabitha and Napoleon's choreagraphy! It was so racy and hot! I do agree with the judges that Karen really brought it. She had the attitude and the moves. On the other hand I thought Kevin didn't do that great. It was like he wasn't really hitting the moves hard enought. Like he was just going through the moves. But overall I liked it.

Legacy/Katherine- I loved loved this dance. They did so awesome with it. Both of them just blew me away! BUT....there is a but....even though I loved the choreagraphy and some of the moves were super awesome (like when he wrapped himself around her waist) it just feels like some of the contemparary dances are so the same. Like if all the moves seem to be repeated in every dance. The same sequence and moves. I don't know that's just my humble opinion.

On the elimination I guess I don't really have an opinion since I haven't really followed too well and they all seem to be in the same level so somebody has to go!

Okay, I'm confused. Ryan's a Latin dancer so the tango "isn't his style?" I thought tango IS Latin?

I haven't seen a Bollywood routine on that show that hasn't knocked me out. And I agree with you, Jacob is amazing. That split-jete was amazing.

I'm with Nigel, it's heartbreaking to lose two of the three tappers at a sweep. But I am SO glad to hear that Brandon and Billy will get a second chance.

Okay, gotta say a couple things before I comment about all the dancing.

1- LOVE LOVE LOVE Adam as a judge! He is funny, good with delivery, but gives them real, understandable critiques that they can use! Anyone else think he might be a Project Runway fan? "Make it work!" :)

2- I am SOOOO missing the results show where we get to see them dance as groups. I am sad that there won't be a top 20 or top 18 group performance. =( It is such an awesome way for choreographers to show off and use the dancers that they want to instead of who is assigned to them.

Okay now on with the show!

Noelle & Russell: (Nosell)Hip Hop: I saw her miss the arial too and that was pretty obvious. I loved the concept of the choreography but Noelle did drop the ball on it.

Jacob & Ashleigh: (Jacleigh) Waltz: I would hate having to dance with him! His flexibility & extension are better than most women. I loved the song that they danced to and agreed with the judges.

Victor & Bianca: (Biantor) Broadway: Disappointing. I thought Bianca was more into it and at the extent of possibly sounding bad, Victor was way too "white boy" in it. Worst part was when they were doing their kicks and they couldn't get them together. Sad cuz I was kinda rooting for Bianca as a tapper myself - not in her league, though!

Noelle & Nathan: (Nathee) Bollywood- LOVED this routine! And how freaking amazing was Nathan's turns at the beginning where he stopped facing front on one leg!!!! that is SOOO hard to have that much control in turns! I loved the choreography and the story and loved that we saw some of the slower, connected movements of Bollywood.

Phillip & channing: (Chanlip) Latin: Bad. Just bad. I disagree with the judges as I didn't think that Channing got her hips going enough. Their song was quite a bit slower than other Latin dances.

Kevin & Karen: (Kevren) Hip hop: I liked this more the 2nd time that I watched it, but I didn't think that Karen was as great as the judges made her out to be. Some cute sections and they are totally making her the sexkitten of the show.

Legacy & Katherine: (Legarine) contemporary: FAVORITE dance of the SHOW!! OMG, totally surprised by Legacy and I think that Stacey is going to be my new favorite choreographer! I was just amazed.

Peter & Pauline: (Peteline) Wade routine: I think Adam called this one. I don't know that people will get it, but it was well danced and pretty cool concept. Although, side note, did we really need to make Van Gogh have any more issues? he did cut his own ear off! :)

Ellenor & Ryan: (Ryanor) tango- I didn't notice the skirt thing til they pointed it out. they were pretty intense, I'm not very well-versed in the tango though so I always have issues critiquing it. Definitely entertaining and they definitely stayed in character. But why in the pre-dance section did they show them doing the lift over head and then when they danced it, they kept it at the chest? I don't think that they should point out issues in the choreography like that.

Elimination: Saw the bottom 4 coming. I agree that Phillip needed to go. he is an amazing tapper, but he did not adjust well to the other styles. Bianca vs. Noelle - It's hard because I really wanted Bianca, but she didn't have a great night. =(

Kay. Feel better. anyone else?
