HI,

My doctor never mentioned prediabetes but I noticed my a1c levels were not in the normal range. Rather than wait for them to say something, I intend to get this under control. I'm looking forward to learning loads here.

Hi Team,
This is my first post here. I had noticed on my lab results for several years that my Glucose was high, as well as a few other values. None of my doctors said anything. Then, when I went to a new doctor in November to check on coughing spells I was having, I gave her a copy of my recent lab tests. Almost under her breath I heard her say "pre-diabetic" but she never mentioned anything about it. I really need to learn how to make this go away!! I admit I've overweight but I've been trying to eat better--mostly cut down on snacking--and I've been exercising a lot more since I retired in 2009 and found Sparkpeople.

About me personally - I'm 70, live with my husband and 2 cats in Maryland close to DC. I have a horse that I board about a 30 min. drive from my house. My occupation, before I retired, was transcribing Radiology reports at a local hospital. I graduated in 1969 from Junior College as a Medical Secretary and all of my jobs have been in the medical field. So, I'm familiar with diabetes and know how bad it can get. None of my close family or my ancestors (that I know of) had diabetes.

I hope I can get good advice on this team for how to adjust whatever needs adjusting to help me with this.

Thanks for admitting me to your group and being my new friends,
Bonnie emoticon

I too have trouble eating less carbs. Still learning. I test my blood sugar to see how my body reacts to meals.

Still not on any plan other than one I am creating as I learn.

I do still eat too many starches.

Hello! I was diagnosed 10 days ago, and my, what a shock! My doctor was very casual about it and told me to lose weight, exercise more, and avoid stress. That's it. No talk or plan or follow up appointment. Well, I am taking this very seriously and have been doing lots of research because I was very unfamiliar with diabetes and prediabetes (this team is a gem!). I bought a glucose meter and I use it. I completely switched my diet around, going from a Mediterranean diet high on whole grains to a low carb diet. I lost 4 pounds this week.
The change of diet is hard for me because, being French, I was "born" in a baguette...
But I need to reverse this thing and I am determined.

If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am not for others, who am I for? And if not now, when? ETHICS OF THE FATHERS

I had the same diagnosis 2 years ago and now my levels are fine. I love this team because our leaders give us great information. I'm sure you will be fine and you are right a pre-diabetic diagnosis doesn't mean you will have diabetes if you take care of yourself!!! emoticon

Brand new here, and checking in. Just got diagnosed yesterday with a phone call that was my lab results. Can't get in to see doc 'til next week. Hopefully I can learn a lot here, while awaiting my visit. I'm also hoping that being pre-diabetic doesn't mean I'm destined to become a full-fledged diabetic.

I am working on reading food labels and reducing carbs in processed foods. I eat a lot of whole foods but I still eat bread, pasta, ketchup and other processed foods.

Wanda that's wonderful news. Hoping your feeling better soon also.
Good afternoon my dear spark friends,
Today was sunny and 0 degrees here this morning bitter cold. It is supposed to hit around 19 later. Sorry I am not able to post that often. As most of you heard my Mom is in a long term facility. We go three days a week with my Dad to visit her. Both my parents are now 91 and Dad's health issues are not good. Anyway asking for prayers for both my parents please. I'm home with a bad cold today while my husband and Dad visit her. emoticon
I did not want her to get sick. Oh by the way I have some good news. I joined weight watchers program and since November 7th. I have lost nine pounds . There is a two pound difference between their scale and my digital scale at home. I go to Curves daily and walk around in my Mom's facility. Hoping you all had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year. Hope it is a healthy New Year.
Hugs...../Denise

Hi guys, I haven't visited the team much, most recently because I've been ill. I joined the team to learn how to help my husband with his pre-diabetes diagnosis. After I joined the team his numbers went even higher and he went from pre-diabetes to diabetes. It was really discouraging.

Krystal puts out her SparkMail tips though and even though I wasn't getting on the team, I read every one of those SparkMails and put a few things in place each time. It really helped that she had tips for holidays and special occasions, but her day to day tips were helpful too. We made changes, Mal checked his blood sugar 1st thing every morning and kept a record for our doctor, and we just worked at it until it was time for his a1c last week. The following is a cut and paste from a SparkMail I sent Krystal. I just decided that every team member needed to hear our good news because it can be your good news also.

"We are so excited! My husband had his a1c done last week and the results are....drum roll please......he has gone from 7.1 last time(diabetes) to......5.3 now! Still higher than we would like but we are delighted anyway to have him in a normal range - even if it is high normal. We are going to keep working and we are NOT going back into the 7's!

We give you a lot of credit for this, Krystal! Your tips have helped so much. So has the fact that you don't just put some tips out there and then leave it at that. You continue to come up with new ideas each month and that helped us see how we could make small changes, lots of them, instead of doing things all at once that would have made him feel terribly deprived."

Merry Christmas to everyone on the team. Pre-diabetes and diabetes is so complicated...I truly never knew how complicated until I started trying to help hubs. I certainly can understand the frustration and the fact that different things seem to help some people and not others. Keep pushing though; find YOUR path. A new year is coming and I feel like we can make it a great year.

Has anyone checked nutrition labels on packages of food lately? This morning as I had my oatmeal and yogurt, I noticed the packaging was now a little different. I decided to also check as now companies are adding Vitamin D and can eliminate a few nutritional values. Was I glad I looked as things have changed. I right away changed the values on my yogurt in my favorite list of foods I keep on the nutrition tracker. Seems my yogurt has less potassium, now added vitamin D and the carbs and fat and protein values have changed. I made these changes in my list of favorites I manually entered on the food tracker.

Just checking in....been a while since I've been able to be on the site for long. I haven't been keeping track of things lately, and now that my wedding and house selling is done, I hope to concentrate more on my health.

Yes, stress can affect all sorts of health problems, including how our body reacts to insulin and blood sugar. I'm not sure scientifically how, but I know our bodies are very responsive to stress levels. I know I need to be better about listening to my body and what it is telling me!!!

I did find a great chart that compares glycemic index and glycemic load. The glycemic load program was developed by Harvard Medical School in 2009 so it is pretty new. I'm still reading and learning though.

I really appreciate all the tips and I'll be checking out that SparkPeople article. This team is a great help.

Does anyone here use Glycemic Load to plan meals. Hubs and I plan to pick a day for which I will have all his meals and snacks planned ahead. I want to see if we can meet the goal of under 100 Glycemic Load and then see what his fasting blood glucose will be in the morning.

It is just a test day and a challenge for us, but if we get a good result, I will know that we CAN do this. His fasting blood sugar this morning was 120 but it has been as high as 150 and as low as 113. We need to do better. We bought a blood sugar test kit and he has been taking and recording it every morning before breakfast. I'm surprised at that but it appears that he is finally on board; if he sticks with it I am sure we will succeed.

If he has to be on a special diet, then I'm going to be on it too. I can't be eating "forbidden" things if he can't have them. WOOHOO, maybe it will kickstart the weight loss again for me.

As for calorie dense recipes without many carbs, you could try adding healthy fats.. nuts, avocado. Lots of protein...

Here's a link to diabetic recipes, maybe you can get some ideas. You do NOT have to be overweight to get diabetes. It is your system not handling insulin very well.

Hi everyone! Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather we are having in southwestern Ohio. Loving the sunshine!

Well, the news around here is that hubs has officially moved from pre-diabetes to diabetes with an A1c of 7.1; I know that is low to some people but we need to do something about it NOW.

He had surgery for esophageal cancer and most of his esophagus and 1/2 of his stomach were removed. The challenge for 26 years has been keeping his weight at a healthy level. He now weight 154 lbs and is 6 feet tall. I am beside myself trying to figure out how to get his BS down and keep his weight and strength up. He is now also a bit depressed about this I think.

It must be hard for him because I am really quite healthy while he has dealt with multiple cancers, cardiac arrest, cardiac arrhythmia (has a pacemaker), 2 strokes, and now has been diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation and diabetes. Ugh! He battles through everything and keeps smiling but I know that the thought of even one more pill.....just is depressing. He takes 29 pills a day now.

Any tips for keeping the calorie count up and the carbs down???
