I was so pleased to see 9/11 dedicated not only as a day of remembrance, but also as a day of service.

I think this is a great challenge, but almost an impossible one. I have been in a lot of racially sensitive situations in my life and this is what I think-

God Bless the people who want to preserve their culture, customs and be with people who they identify as being the same- these people bring us stability and a sense of belonging and a sense of being ok in this world.

God Bless the people who want to explore the culture of others- they bring us new ideas, new ways of thinking, and a sense that all people are a part of the universe and are valuable. They bring us a sense of belonging to the larger community and a sense of being ok in this world.

The only people who do not bless this world are those who spread hatred and pain to others, be it through violence of action, violence of thought, or violence of speech. They bring us a sense of fear and fractioning in the world.

My thoughts go out to all who lost someone in the three sites in the United States on 9/11. I can't imagine the pain.

My thoughts go out to everyone in this world who have been touched by people of any race, religion, or country who spread pain- for they do not understand love or the religion they profess. Sharon

It's hard not to remember 9/11 everyday when you live near a huge army base. Bless the people that lost their lives that day, the loved ones left behind and the men and women working to prevent this from happening again.

While I can't control the actions of others, I can control the way I behave. The best thing you can do to combat prejudice is to not participate in it and when your faced with it try to show them what a good person you are, not what a good person your "group" is. I've volunteered with a lot of immigrants that were surprised to see me there, but soon it didn't matter. I showed my true colors one person at a time.

I can see how you feel. This is true there is problems with prejudging others for which ever reason. Prejudge people everyday. The man, woman or even child with the skin color that isn't your own. This might not be realized, but it happens to each race. Just go into a neighborhood that isn't predominately your race. You will see it. Hold a hand of a child of mixed race while going to through a store you will see it. Does it make you want to shout in anger at the way they are treating this precious child. Yes. We have received the looks from many different races, not just one. Does it make this persons who you are holding hands with any less than anyone else? Are we going to shout at the people. No probably not, because that would make our gift from heaven feel uncomfortable. They all three are a gift from heaven too. Their mother was murdered in 2007. Leaving 3 gifts behind. Did I know before this that there was prejudging out there? Yes of course I was the only white child in my neighborhood. I had many friends and until junior high when many of the prejudging started we all thought it was pretty cool. We were a rainbow. Wish I had the copy of the picture. We had a picture of about 12 girls we were the raining g's. heheh The names you come up with as children. We stuck our hands together and it was exactly like a rainbow. When walking home from Junior high one day it was my friends that helped me when I was hit over the back of the head and called a nazi. Being only 13 and not reading much I didn't really know what a Nazi was. Wow what an eye opener that was. 7 stitches later I thought about this and realized that is their problem if they don't like me, because of a prejudgment they have. I hated having to change the way I walked home from school though and can understand having to change your exercise routine. I know this may be politically in correct of me, but I believe we should see each others color. Wow what God has created. I couldn't imagine it any other way. I believe we should all see the color, realize what beauty God made in this world and accept each other as such. Could you imagine if every flower in the world was just red or pink? I couldn't I so enjoy a awesome bouqet of many different colors and tectures.

I realize after going back and reading it can be kinda taken as critizing. THat isn't the way I mean it at all. I hope it isn't taken that way. I just don't have the pretty words to make it said the exact way I want it to be said.

Some Prejudgments I have had. Seeing someone stumbling up a curb. The person holding the sign on the side of the road. I have had more than that, but those are the main ones I can think of right now. NO the main one. Is the man that had 4 kids a basket full of groceries and went into the 10 items or less. I'm ashamed to say instead of asking if he needed help I grumbled about being stupid and going in the 10 items or less. Well he wasn't stupid he was a man that had lost his wife just 3 weeks before that and he had 4 children under 5 the youngest being 5 or so months old. It was the first time he had been completely on his own and trying to do the stuff his wife normally did. I could have helped that man instead of complaining about him. That is were my praying comes in. Learning from my mistake and trying never to do that again.

There is many ways I can improve on myself and prejudging is one of them. This will be one that I work on along with keeping things in prayer.

God Bless
Anna

I'm very sorry if this post sounds rude or judging or any of the other negative thoughts that come about. That is far from how I mean it. I debate if I should push the post message button and I'm going to and hope for the best. Blessings to all.

Through God all things are possible.

This is a great thing to strive for.

I don't win races, but I always cross the finish line. I'm not fast, but I try my best to become faster. I don't have sports endorsements or earn a paycheck, but that doesn't stop me from running. My pace does not define me. Just because "professional" does not precede "athlete" in describing me doesn't make my running any less valuable. I am an everyday athlete; leading a normal life, but with big goals and dreams.
I am an athlete. I am a runner. (runzoerun.com)

I'm all for remembering those who lost their lives because of the terrorists attacks - my heart goes out to the families and other loved ones of those who perished.
We can't pretend that we're all equal and that race, class, creed, ethnic backgrounds, economics, etc don't play a huge role in how we're treated and in how we treat others. I like to think of myself of one who is beyond prejudice, but I know that's not true. I am victimized on a regular basis - not because I'm female but because I am black. People in my community continually call the police when I walk/run my neighborhood - simply because I am a minority and they're not comfortable with my presence in "their" community. I don't bother anyone and I used to speak to all my neighbors until the police started making regular stops at my house because my neighbors (whom I have lived near for more than 5 years) keep calling to report a suspicious black prowler lurking in the neighborhood. This behavior by my community has changed my perspective of those not in my ethnic community and that's sad. I've had to change where I work out to avoid being harassed and racially intimated by the community in which I live.

So I am not challenged by this part of the challenge and I don't believe its one that can be done. We see color and class all the time and whether silently or out loud we make judgements. I know judgements are made against me.

There is a very touching youtube video about a 9/11 survivor.

it's called FINDING HOPE

Definitely worth watching. Even those who survived should be in our prayers.

I am a Red Cross Disaster volunteer and will be working at the Shanksville, PA crash site tomorrow. I'm hoping to be able to hear General Powell speak and hear the bells as the names of the victims are read. It should be a very moving day. I'm glad that I can also offer assistance to the family members that will be there.

Thanks for your post. It's too easy to forget.

Challenge 09/11/09: emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Happy Friday 9/11 to you...

This day marks a tragic event in the history of our world:

- The attack and subsequent collapse of the World Trade Center Twin Towers in NYC

- The attack on the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia (just outside of Washington, D.C.)

- The attempted hijacking and subsequent crash of a fourth plane into a field near Shanksville in rural Pennsylvania

No matter where each of us were that day, the images that we saw on our television changed us forever. In total 2,993 people died in the attacks. The overwhelming majority of casualties were civilians, including nationals of over 90 countries.

Many brave individuals put the lives of others above their own during these horrible events. The color of their skin, their religious beliefs, whether they were male or female, how old they were....none of these things mattered. Helping others and coming together to triumph over tragedy were what mattered most.

Your challenge today is two-fold.

First:

*Take a moment today to think of those that lost their lives on 9/11. If you inclined, say a prayer or have a moment of silence for those lost their lives or were personally effected by the attacks.

Second:

*Do not see age, color, sex, or religion in anyone you come across today. Help ALL around you. Love ALL around you. Make a difference to ALL around you.

Throughout history, our lives have always been touched by anger, hatred, and war. In order to change our future, we have to care for ALL people of this world. The first step in changing our world can happen right here, right now. It starts with each and every one of us.

May those that lost their lives on 9/11 never be forgotten. May those of us that have been touched by these tragic events, help change our world for the better. We may come from every corner of the globe, but deep down, we are all the same.

In solemn memory of those lost on 9/11/01,
