Welcome, and Happy Birthday! I wish you luck in finding a gym that is a good fit for you both with the equipment and the classes and atmosphere that they provide. I think that is essential for making you actually want to go there.

Big Dave, I have to say that I LOVE your comment. Your light heartedness is refreshing!

Welcome and Happy Birthday emoticon emoticon emoticon ,
I know this journey is hard, but you are in the right place. There is so much support here.
If you can find a place that does water aerobics on a regular basis, it's a great workout, and easy on the joints....the best part is you don't get stuck in the equipment (yeah, I've been there, and at curves, too). Walking is great, as well, if you can stay on your feet for awhile and the impact isn't too rough (walking on a wood floor or a gym floor works best for me....less impact).
One of my favorite exercise tools is a little "body cycle". You can usually pick them up at Walmart or a drug store for less than $40. It looks like a stand with bike pedals on it, and you can use it for upper and lower body workout. It's my go-to when I can't get to anything else, or when my health prevents any other exercise.

emoticon and that is a great gift your father is giving you. Gym memberships are like gold. You may have to work up to that gym membership by taking short walks around the block at your home. That is what I had to do and it really helped me. I started with just going down to our mail box and the venturing out to the street and going half a block and then going a little further the next day. I kid you not. It probably took me a month before I was ready to make it around our block. That first year my goal was to walk around our two villages. I didn't make it the first year but I did it the second year and haven't stopped. Into the second year I bought a 3 month membership to our fitness center just to get me through the winter and at the end of the 3 months I like it so well that I bought a year membership. But, I had to work myself up to that membership. I wish you lots of luck and you will be in the gym sooner than you think.

Michelle, Happy Birthday for yesterday!!

You mentioned about a pedometer, I just want to put this out there: 10,000 steps = approx. 5 miles. (depending on your stride) There is no way in heck that you would strap on your sneakers and go for a 5 mile walk the first day of exercise. So drop the bad thoughts on that one!

So what I would do is put on the pedometer, do a normal day. See how many steps you did and add 50 or 100 more steps to that number. Each week add 250 more steps and work your way up.

Water aerobics are great because they take the weight off of the joints if that works for you and you had fun, do it and enjoy every moment of it. I think that is part of what is hard for us because some things we want to do mentally are not possible physically but keep it in your tool box for further down the road when you have lost a bit more weight.

The main thing is be kind to yourself, it takes time but you can do it!!!!

Watching salt intake also trying not to buy foods that have high fructose corn syrup, sugar, rice syrup, corn syrup, fructose, sucrose etc. in the first three ingredients.

No foods that have more than 3 ingredients that I can not pronounce.

If an item has more than 10 ingredients I put it on the Do Not Buy List as it is too processed.

It's good to hear the decisions you are making. I understand about Curves too. I love to do exercise videos, have you seen Hip Hop Abs and Zumba? I love them, but I also love Walk Away the Pounds. Those are just some suggestions to give you other avenues with working out.

Happy Belated Birthday Michelle!

I know that humiliating experience all to well.. I got stuck in a machine once. I was in a co-ed gym and could hear the guys snickering. It does get better. I think that's fantastic that your dad is getting you a one year gym membership! You'll have to let us know which one once you've decided!

As you start to move and lose weight, everything will start falling into place. The trick is don't give up. I've wanted to on many occasions but with this team's encouragement, I've kept going. You can do this, remember you're worth it!

Joyce

But, if you pick yourself up and just keep pushing forward, eventually you'll get to the top and have a beautiful view! **

Hey Michelle,

Happy Birthday.

I know the difficulties that you talk of. I do Not have a weight problem, I have a height problem, I am to short for my weight.

I don't know where you are, but where I am, I am quite fortunate that we have a facility that is a gym attached to a hospital. They have a therapy pool there and offer aquasize classes, which I take advantage of. In my situation, this works best. When I am ready for the next phase, I will move on to the other equipment and the rest of the facility. The key is doing something.

We need to work through the difficult stage of our program, and when it gets better it will be great. That is something to look forward to.

Good luck.

Big Dave

Well, It is official...I am 44 years old. I want to make a plan to get healthy and finally take control of my life and my eating. That is such a challenge!!!!!! My dad told me that he would buy me a gym membership for one year and I just had to decide where I wanted the membership. I went to Curves and I could hardly get into the machines that they have. So I am NOT going to choose them!! It was humiliating to try to use those machines. However, I am not going to give up. I got a pedometer and am feeling very overwhelmed about the prospect of taking 10,000 steps a day. I think I need to start much slower and work my way up. I went swimming today and did water aerobics and that was great. I am trying to make different choices every day. The biggest challenge for me is eating. I struggle with following a meal plan and portion control. Especially when I go out to eat. So I am making a daily commitment to my best friend that I will follow my meal plan and work from there. Anyway, you guys are AMAZING. So helpful and friendly. It really makes my day to see the weight tickers and see the success that people are experiencing. It truly gives me hope.

Michelle
