March 2, and I am still posting in February. That's kind of the story of my life lately. But YEA!! My grant proposal was accepted and we will now be getting structured math interventions in the district elementary schools. I did the little dance of joy when the notification came.

Now if I could just get the scale to move.....

Yep, it definitely continues. The same kid was removed by the school resource officer shortly after school began. In about ten minutes he had threatened me twice (among other things) and set off another student who wanted to feed into the behavior instead of doing what he was supposed to do. Oh, well... An absent student and another in ISS means I have an open 7th period to work on resume, cover letter, and references. Guess what I'm going to be doing???

Yep, we are all plagued. Mine doesn't get any better. I had my meeting with the assistant principal this morning. The principal joined in. Essentially, they are believing him, since his accusations have come up before. At least the bottom line was that I was told I needed to be squeaky clean. Since that is the end of it, at least for now, I don't think I will pursue association involvement. To top it off, the same kid was looking at inappropriate things yesterday. One of my associates reported it to me, I thought I had it addressed through the source, then it came up again, not from the source I thought. I was going to address it again this morning in a different manner, but the associate took it to administration (without telling me) and now the kid has internet blocked. Okay, one problem... his curriculum is internet based. I need to come up with an alternative that is packet/worksheet-based until his internet is restored. The student won't work on anything unless it is with me 1:1, and I seriously doubt he will do packets. Oh, well... I'm creative... I'll come up with something.

Boy, I'm reading this thread and struck by the fact that we are all universally being plagued with the same issues, regardless of our state. So sad for kids.
Nancy, we do like our 2 weeks of spring break, but our summer gets cut short. The weeks come out at one end or the other. But most of us like the balance of a shorter summer, a week at Thanksgiving, 2 at Christmas, and 2 at Spring break.
I'll soon be retired and be on break ALL the time.

I've seen the same thing. Should be teacher first, coach second priority or get a separate person to coach.
I may be forced to take our BD position at school even though I'm told daily how great I am with the level 2 (more moderate) kids and the kids with autism. I told my principal today that I'm putting in for a transfer. I love my building, the staff, and the principal, but I don't want BD. That's what you get for doing your job well. I do have seniority over the other 3 sped teachers in my building so that may help. I think he was shocked when I said I was putting in a transfer. I also have 2 fabulous and 1 good EA. I would have to go back to working with 2 incompetent people, which doesn't work in BD. You'd think after 28 yrs. you would be safe.

Had a disturbing interaction with our AD today. Another one of our staff (our Ag teacher) has decided to resign. This guy also coached so the AD intimated that would put a different slant on my openings....translation: we won't hire a SPED teacher unless they can coach. They did that to me three years ago, disregarded who I wanted to hire, and hired a guy who could coach. It was a disaster; we had to dismiss him. Now we want to do the same thing. Isn't this like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titantic?

I can't wait until I get to the point that clothing don't fit me, although I gotta say the clothing I'm wearing all seem to be fitting a bit better, and look a bit better on me BUT today at school (we have a REAL scale) I stepped onto the scale (although I usually weight myself in the morning before dressing) and saw a number I saw three weeks. But gotta say, I'm proud of myself because I didn't give myself permission to go nuts. (

Btw, did anyone see the article in the Times Magazine about self-control. The What The Heck syndrome is just so true!)

I like hearing those success stories about clothes not fitting. emoticon Linky! My clothes also keep getting looser and looser, but I'm determined not to buy any more until summer (because I have no shorts that fit) and until I'm below 200. That means 14 more pounds to go... Slowly but surely.

My meeting with administration has been postponed again. Now it is tomorrow morning before school. *eye roll* I'm done worrying about it... Okay, at least that is what I'm telling myself.

I've gotten to the part in my application process that is asking for previous employer. I have two employers who really can't be contacted (student teaching and residential placement) because they no longer work for those companies. Any suggestions? I will also take suggestions for things to include in my resume and cover letter.

Way to go on the clothes and I'm glad you got back from your trip safely.
I'm in an all day training today. I'm going to run to school during our lunch break to say goodbye to one of my students whose moving.

Things have been pretty crazy in my neck of the woods right now. Didn't realize it had been so long since I had posted here.

We have two openings in our sped department. I am not worried, but my administrators seem to be at a fever pitch. It seems to be a little too early to get really excited about whether we have people applying or not.

My trip to Pierre stopped about 75 miles from its end. The weather just became too dicey, so we had to turn around and go back. Luckily we were able to get back before it got dark and impossible to see the road.

Still stuck at 169, but getting into clothes I wasn't able to wear last year at this time.

It's not March yet, but I feel like the count down to everything related to "end of year" is already rolling out. Wow, is it really that close? Yep, we have out big test the week after spring break. (What brainiac thought of giving the kids a week of break right before the big test?) That means 3 weeks of instruction and one week of review before the big testing days hit.......ok, no pressure!

Kitty, it seems like it never ends sometimes, doesn't it? My heart goes out to you. I agree that it's good to have support, especially representation. Mostly it will help you stay more focused and calm to have someone else helping present your side in the meeting. And BFOLK12 has a great point about the time lapse - they must not be too worried about it! I'm looking forward to hearing how this is all resolved for you.

Kitty, I'm so sorry you're going through this. I agree with those who suggested talking to a union rep. In the meantime, you can't change anything until the meeting - and even then, it may be a case of the administrator having to go through the motions of listening to the student's complaints. It sounds like you have plenty of support from others who also know that this kid blows things way out of proportion, and, from the sounds of it, outright lies - so hopefully it will just be a pro forma meeting. Do try to enjoy your weekend in the meantime.

I wondered why somebody didn't do something; then I realized I was somebody! - unknown

I have talked to my union rep to appraise him of the situation. I have also talked to a couple of other teachers in the building. They have all said that he blows things out of proportion, but if it looks like things are going to go south, I will stop the meeting until I can get a union rep to be with me. I'm also spending my time at Saturday school working on applications.

Oh, to just put a cap on this whole thing, the student who has made all these accusations was off the wall wacky Friday talking about how he wanted to kill himself (not unusual) and how he had see people commit suicide then buried the bodies so no one would find them. He states h was in 4th or 5th grade when this happened. I did follow up with the parent, who says it is a bunch of bologna, but it gives you a perspective on the student my assistant principal is listening to.

Application here I come.

On the plus side of thinking about things, if they are putting off the meeting for so long, they don't really care about it. If they thought you were truly a danger to your students something would have been done the day the complaint was made. Keep thinking on the bright side!

Kit,
You might want to consider talking to your union rep.....or if you are in a right to work state, call the rep for your teacher organization....NAE or someone. Unfortunately, damage can be done even when the accusations are not legitimate. I don't mean to make it scarier for you, but for me it has helped to have someone to talk it over with who can help you frame it in a way that protects your teaching certificate and keeps it professional. It's hard when you are in the middle of this to not get emotional without some support. Good luck, but really....get yourself some support, if only for your own peace of mind. Wishing you the best!

Well, I have been summoned to a meeting with the asst. principal to discuss the accusations of my student, which range from me squirting students with a water bottle to throwing things at students (never mind any of the things that the student does or doesn't do). Get this... the meeting isn't until Monday when the incident happened Wednesday. I have all weekend to stew about it. I know what I will be doing with any open time I have: applying for a new job.

Thank you Nancy and Roxelle,
I'm going to spend some time getting my retirement legs on the ground and hanging with my retired husband. Then I will begin to decide what interests to pursue. So many possibilities.......I can hardly begin to think about it. I've been working since I was 16 so just the thought of this kind of freedom is rather overwhelming.......................in a GREAT way!

You are all so very awesome!!!!!
Much love and camaraderie,
Leslie

Leslie, congratulations on your retirement! Is this going to be a full retirement, or do you hope to find some other kind of work to do? My mother retired after 25 years working for AAA and now shes super-busy with her catering business but shes so happy. I think I have a few years left at least 8 or 9, maybe more. I cant even think about that right now! But Im happy for you. :)

Barb/LinkySD best wishes on your grant. I hope you get it!!

Kitty how did court go??? I agree with Kim about videotaping! Would that be legal in your state? If you get totally fed up, consider moving here to Gillette, WY. Ive never worked for a better district. (Despite the bully in my office!)

Candi - I agree with Hiker about trying not to worry about the heli-mom. You're doing your job by helping your blind student gain independence, and you would be doing a disservice otherwise! The mom can complain, but nobody can fault you for something like this. I'm so sick of parents being over-protective to such extreme degrees.

Guess what, parents! When I was a kid we rode in the waaayyy back of the station wagon, standing up, without seatbelts! We ran with scissors! We ate Halloween candy! We played outside - in the FRONT yard - until the streetlights went on! And I seem to have turned out just fine. :)

Leslie-Congrats again! I have to say I am jealous.

I spent the entire week testing students on a test that tells us whether or not the kids are ready for the big test. They are so over it. Literally, one of the tests of 5 tests we gave this week took 2 hours and 30 minutes...........for what!??????? The other tests were 1-2 hours long each. I hate what this is doing. We are one of the 10 "waiver" states. I am here to warn everyone....the testing doesn't become less....in fact, it has increased.

So enough griping about that! I will just do the best I can to wiggle quality instruction in between tests. What else can I do?
On the lighter side:
Progress-while on vacation I didn't gain weight, even though I was eating scrumptious food in restaurants every day. That's a big one for me! We had a very active vacation (hiking, swimming and long walks on hilly terrain) and I think I have finally learned how to make better choices in novel situations.

The hike to El Yunque was incredible, and so was the snorkeling on Flamenco Bay. I will try to load pics for my blog this weekend.

If you think you can, You Will!

Thank you all for your support and lovely words. The sad but reassuring fact is that the struggles we are all feeling cross state, county, and district lines. It has become pretty universal that kids ARE being left behind. They are being left with a very poor system that does not make their education relevant or appropriate.

I have LOVED helping children who have special needs. They are the champions of our very challenging world. I will never regret my beloved career choice, because it has given me more that I have could have imagined or deserved.

I am equally at peace with my decision to let the work be passed on to others.

You are ALL my heros. We are a special and privileged group of educators. I am proud to be among you.

Peace for now,
Leslie

Btw, congratulations Leslie on making your decision to retire. My friend retired at the end of last year and she is so darned happy it's ridiculous!

Maybe you should discreetly video tape some of your lessons so they can see what really goes on. Good luck! I can't believe a principal would take the word of a mentally ill student over a teacher. Obviously, if we were talking about abuse that would be different.

Some days I think I'm going to be driven out of the profession before retirement; others I think I need a different school district. This is one of those days where either would apply. When one of my students was told that he couldn't sit on the computer because he had not participated in the advisory activity, he pitched a profanity-laced hissy fit about how I waste time, never do anything, don't help students, throw things at students, and in general everything I have ever done that he hasn't liked. Okay, fine... I get this type of stuff all day long and let it roll off my back with little to no response. Not this time. The student has gone to the assistant principal and griped about me, so now I'm getting called into his office for an extended conversation. Just great. Have I done anything wrong? Nope. Has the student done anything wrong? Many things. Will there be consequences to the student for any of his out-of-line behavior? Nope.

This is one of those days when I wonder how much longer I can do this job in this profession in this school district without going insane.

DHS can't subpoena me because it isn't a DHS case; it is criminal. However, I'm content with having the student services director go. As for not having me go, I don't think it relates to the school per se. This is one of those kiddos who, because of her behavior and unwillingness to hep herself, is very easy to start "dis'ing" and being very negative instead of focusing on what has been done, what else we can do (not much), and what the student needs. I have been pretty vocal lately about the fact that I'm doing no good as a teacher for her, so I think that is the asst. principal's biggest concern.

Leslie, congratulations on making your decision. I doubt I'll make 36 years - I'm looking at 30 (which is another 12 years) for the same reason you've decided to retire - I just hope I can make it that long.

Kitty, I think you should go - it sounds like it's in the best interest of the student (if not necessarily the school - which may be where your AP is coming from) for you to be there to advocate for her. Can the DHS worker subpoena you so you can go without having to worry about your building admin approving your attendance?

I wondered why somebody didn't do something; then I realized I was somebody! - unknown

Leslie, I will be sorry to see you leave the profession, but I'm glad you have made the right decision for you. Enjoy the rest of the year.

There seems to be a powerplay in my world, and I'm not sure how to take it. My severely mentally ill student has court (for her assault on me) tomorrow. I had been asked by the DHS worker to attend. It is the DHS worker's hope that if enough people attend and say that the child is not receiving the care she needs that the court will place her in residential (since the parents won't voluntarily do this). My asst. principal felt that I did not need to attend, that my attendance would not benefit the child and a written statement would suffice instead. At our department meeting I brought up the fact that I'm working on it and trying to make it neutral and factual. My curriculum director seems to feel differently and will be contacting the DHS worker and possibly attending the court hearing.

I made the decision to RETIRE about 4 weeks ago. I have finally told my principal and some other school people who will be affected by my decision. My principal was very upset. I was flattered because I never wanted to be that 60 year old that people are whispering about, rolling their eyes, and checking their watches. A number of things lead to my decision. I had hoped to work another couple of years, but I can no longer participate in a system that will not put our kids first.
So after 36 years, I'm moving on. I have loved my career, my kids, my colleagues, and the challenges. I believe I have been a very effective, loving, and creative teacher. I plan on spending the next 3 1/2 months giving my kids 200%. The cranky, demanding parents, the lawyers, the paperwork, the criminal testing, and the long hours..............I will gladly give up.

Thank you for letting me share, Spark friends.
Peace,
Leslie

Submitted a grant proposal last week. We won't know if we get the thing until the 1st of March. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Go to Pierre (489 miles round trip) on Thursday to be part of a state work group to revise and revamp state forms for prior notice. We haven't had snow of any account this whole winter, of course, it is supposed to start snowing Monday. It figures.

RE: Blind student. Is this student receiving OT services, I surely hope so, and that would included eating, drinking in a variety of situations, dressing, anything pretty much fine motor. WOW.
RE:Court. I have been to staffings, to court over custody as a witness, to many many DHS / DHHR meetings over students in residential placement or in closely monitored home placement or specialized foster placement. If every you plan to "say it" be sure you have documentation with you.
Parent conferences: no one showed up. sigh
What a busy, fast flying month. Off Monday. We have had NO snow days and 1 2 hr delay all winter. Too early to guess, but we might have a spring break. We lose spring break, day at a time, to make up snow days.

We just finished "Parent Yells @ Teacher" conferences on Friday. No real parent drama, thankfully! We have a new girl working @ our school that I don't get along with. She is good friends with my husband's exwife and we have to work closely together. :( She came up to me on Friday and said "I have some big shoes to fill. People actually like you" then she patted me on the arm. I was speechless. When I picked my jaw up, I responded with "well, I hope so..." & walked away. This is going to be a very long school year! Thank goodness she is only on a 1yr contract that ends in May. I'm hoping she changes her attitude about me or doesn't get hired on again next year.
Sorry, vent over :)

We have Monday off for President's Day. The following week we have a work day on Monday; we're on trimesters (12 week grading periods) and it's the end of the trimester, so we have a day to complete and enter grades.

I don't have Monday off, but my son does. His school district always has a full-day inservice in February or March. This year it is February. His conferences are wacky this year. They were for four hours last Wednesday and will have the same schedule this Tuesday and Thursday. The poor teachers don't get their comp days until March 15th and 16th, but that extends their spring break.

Good luck with the court thing. I was once subpoenaed to testify for a kid, but when I showed up the lawyer for the other side decided that they could settle the matter out of court. They did, but I felt kind of cheated because I had a lot to say. Don't know if that will happen to you. Wishing you the best.

Wish we had a long weekend. Had Parent Teacher Conferences on Thursday night and Friday until noon. We are back to work on Monday morning. Argh!

Good luck with the court thing Kit! Let us know how that comes out....

Candi-don't worry about the helicopter mom.....she will grow up someday. In the meantime just keep helping your student find independence. That's your job. Sometimes we lay the ground work and a decade later a parent will leave the land of denial. In the meantime, do what you know is right for the student.

Everyone enjoy the long weekend!

My day just got more interesting. My mentally ill girl brought cigarettes and a lighter to school. Does she know better? Yep. I will have to call the DHS worker again. I talked to the DHS worker yesterday about the fact that Mom refused to pick the student up after she vomited Monday. Mom downplayed her very inappropriate response, admitting she used an inappropriate word, but left out the statements about the school not wanting the student, being fed up with the school, and threatening to call DHS. DHS worker told me the student has court next Thursday and invited me to come. I was actually hoping to go an entire week without talking to her. The reality is that I can't even go 24 hours.

Update: There was originally going to be NO consequence for her. Now she is OSS for at least today.

HIKER: Sounds like a wonderful trip! RELAXING!! I got to play in the snow with my 6 year old son on our snow day! Built a snow fort and had a snowball fight! My DH wants to climb the "14ers". We went to Colorado a couple of summers ago and he got to climb and had a great time.
KITTY: Awesome for your son and for MOM!
ROX: Glad you got some results!!

Well, I think I have made my first mistake with my 3rd grade student who is blind. Not really with him but with his mom. I had him take a drink out of the drinking fountain to try to get rid of his hiccups. Little did I know he had NEVER done it b/4! His mother is VERY germ conscious and does not allow him to drink out of them. (I did not know this at the time) It just so happened that his cousin was in the hall at the time and saw us right as the water was hitting my student in the nose! So of course he tells him mom who tells my students mom! He had no idea what to do........his mother is VERY over protective and is not allowing him to be independent. Then he tells me yesterday that he doesn't even dress himself! WOW! emoticon

Roxell, glad HR was helpful to you. Keep us posted.

I'm not sure on the snow day. We haven't really had much snow or crappy weather, so I think i can do without the snow day. My kids are a little too young yet for cooking, and get cabin fever something awful.

I had Nicholas's conferences last night. They were GREAT!! He is in his top reading group and "competing" for top spot there. He is well beyond third trimester in math. Writing is a little harder for him, but only because it is more labor intensive (ADHD child doesn't do labor intensive). Meds are working... She even reassured me that he won't end up in a classroom like mine. (Don't get me wrong, I like my students and job, but I don't want my classroom for my children.)

Rox: Glad HR was helpful and it sounds like the boss was supportive too. What a mess! I hope you get some resolution soon!

Valentines day was wonderful. Dh made a wonderful, healthy dinner and we had a romantic, no-kid night. (owing to the partial empty nest thing we are doing these days.)

I am also taking the long weekend to meet Dh on one of his buisness trips. Can't wait, beach, palm trees, 80 degree weather, oh and would my life be complete with out a hike? Of course not! We'll be hiking in the rain-forest in Puerto Rico.

Candi....glad you got a snow day! If I couldn't go visit an island a snow day would be my other choice! ......hot cocoa.....good book.......staying home with kids and teaching them to bake or play a board game........those days are gone for me........but maybe when I have grandkids. Enjoy!

If you think you can, You Will!

Hi everyone, sorry I've been MIA for the past few days. I'm dealing with a lot and didn't feel like I could contribute much to the general discussion, so I stayed away. But I really need to let some stuff out and I know nobody here will mind.

There's a woman at work who for some reason can't stand me. Well actually it's two women because they're close friends. The one who is my peer spies on me and reports back to the other one. The other one is in the same role as us, but with more responsibility - among her roles, she is one of my two "mentors." (Supposedly - I avoid going to her at all costs.) She's hot-headed and aggressive, confrontational, and not someone who you want to be against you. Every once in a while she comes up to me, or emails me, or texts me, to confront me about what she has heard that I supposedly said about her. It hasn't been accurate or true, not once. Today was the last straw. She asked me to go for coffee with her at the little place next door. There she proceeded to tell me, among other things, "I don't like you" and that she thinks I'm "a dishonest liar." It was no surprise to me that she doesn't like me, and I told her that it was widely known in the department. But I asked her to give me an example of when she thinks I have lied and she couldn't come up with any. So I said that obviously it wasn't true. This went on for a few minutes and I was amazed at myself for staying calm and level-headed. My voice didn't even crack and I didn't start to tear up and cry! That's a big deal for me. So it ended up with kind of a stare-down. Then I said "Are we done?" She said yes and I just walked out on her without a word.

This woman works closely with my boss, and I worry that her "misinformation" will be expressed to him in such a way that he may believe it. I have informed him of two prior incidents, but I do not tell him about every little thing. But today I told him... "The situation with --X-- has escalated and I am now feeling personally harassed. I think I need to take this to Human Resources." He looked shocked and asked me what was happening, so I told him just a little bit - the I-dont-like-you part and the you're-a-liar part. He agreed that I should go to H.R. I also asked him to please consider removing her role as one of my mentors, and he quickly agreed that he would do so.

So tonight I can't stop thinking about it! I absolutely do not want to go to work tomorrow. I feel nauseous about it. I will attend my 8am meeting at one of my schools, but then I will go to H.R. and ask to speak with the person I need to see there. The thought of going back to my office just makes me feel ill.

Oh, and her spy isn't much better. I'll go into the office in the morning and say hello or good morning or whatever, and even if she's the only one there she IGNORES me.

I just hate this stupid drama.

Thanks for letting me be a little selfish here for a minute. I'll be back in the swing of the conversation soon.
