Thanks for posting the guidelines. I would have to agree with the eliminating nuts if you want to see weight loss. The calories and fat add up fast if you're not careful.

Thanks for the link. It reminds me of how I started on Eat to Live. Blended fruit smoothie for breakfast, giant salad with beans for lunch (rec amount was 1 lb raw vegs), dinner was 1 lb cooked vegs. I ate 1 "whole starch" like brown rice (1/2-1 cup) a day for the first 6 weeks and 2 fruits a day. No sugar, oil, and I limited caffeine to about 1-2 cups .

Lost like crazy and you are so full. Time to go back and do it again.

Go for it Ronald. I'm mostly a major lurker. I am so grateful to the McDougall's for making all that information available to us for free. They are so generous.

I just found George's journal. His blood work didn't look too good at the beginning, and then after eating MWLP his blood work is amazing. I really like the way he tells what he's eating. Seems the simpler the better!

Feel for you Ronald! One of the things that has helped me the very most is re-reading and re-reading some of the journals of Star McDougallers on drmcdougall.com .

In fact, I think that it's time for me to read George's original journal again. I just love how incredibly simply he ate as he lost significant weight and his numbers all became amazing. I've sort of plateaued out lately and need to be making changes too.

Let's support one another. Here's rooting for us! emoticon

I just got my lab results back, Dr. said everything looks good- Total Cholesterol 115, LDL 44, HDL33, and triglyceride's 239. The triglycerides, upon research, are too high. I have been following the McDougall Plan, but haven't lost or gained any weight. Excess weight, which I have can elevate this number. So........ It looks like I am going to have to double down and follow the Maximum Weight Loss Plan! The high triglycerides run in my family, my brother has the same problem, and he is at ideal weight.

That is really exciting news White-Lotus. I hope you will report back after your experience. I know just strictly adhering to the Maximum Weight Loss Guidelines has made a very big and quick difference in my weight loss which had stalled.

Yes, Rosa--I have Dr. E's book and both of Rip's - also Dr. Fuhrman's Eat to Live. I've been reading/following this plan for about 3 years. We're all at different places in the journey and I'm not ready to give up all whole foods with some fat like nuts or avocados, so I'm at the place of trying to use them sparingly. It will be interesting to see to what I feel after spending a week with Dr. McD in Costa Rica this summer.

I found it hard to give up fats too WhiteLotus. I think the more you read, the more you'll see the damage that oils/fat do to your body. Check out Dr. Esselstyn for more info. There is enough fat in every plant.

I believe what Dr. McDougall says: "The fat you eat is the fat you wear."

Love this. Thanks. I know that my inability to lose may have to do with avocado, olives and nuts. I almost never use oil or eat flour products. I cannot drink soy milk so I do drink less than a cup of unsweetened almond milk. Doesn't seem like I eat much of these and I do not feel as well with no fats at all.

Will play with this.

MWL Guidelines
(Just a reminder and thanks also to Morgan E.):

Guidelines from Mcdougall Program for Maximum Weightloss. Please consider picking up the book to read all of the reasons behind the guidelines, for recipes, meal ideas and for more details about each bullet point here. You can also go to drmcdougall.com/forums/recipes to get loads of wonderful MWL recipes. This works people!

1. Eliminate All Animal Foods
2. Eliminate All Oils
3. Eliminate All High Fat Plant Foods: Nuts, Nut Butters, Nut milks, Seeds, Seed Butters, Avocados, Coconut, Soy Milk, Tofu, Tempeh & Olives.
4. Eliminate All Flour Products
5. Eat Whole Grains and Potatoes
6. Eat Legumes
7. Make Green & Yellow Vegetables One-Half to One-Third of your meal (green and yellow means just non starchy vegetables! Red peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, etc still fall under these guidelines.)
8. Eat Uncooked Foods (uncooked fruits and vegetables)
9. Restrict Fresh Fruit to No More Than Two Servings a Day, and Avoid Dried Fruit, Fruit Puree, and Fruit Juice
10. Use Simple Sugar Sparingly
Portioning your plate for maximum weight loss:
*Moderate approach - two-thirds starch and one-third very low calorie vegetable dishes or salads
*Rapid approach - one-half starch and one-half very low calorie vegetable dishes or salads
*Hasty approach - one-third starch and two-thirds very low calorie vegetable dishes or salads
Weighing is unnecessary. Ideally the low calorie vegetable portion should be eaten before the starch.
The hasty approach "may not be the wisest approach for permanent weight loss: You may find the satisfaction from the meals may be too low for long-term adherence."

Guidelines for Healthy Eating in MWL book, page 67.
1. Eat until youíre satisfied
2. Graze
3. Allow time for digestion
4. Chew foods thoroughly
5. Restrict variety (by having more monotonous meals you will eat less. You don't necessarily have to do this though if you love cooking and having different things all of the time!)

Weight-Losing Reasons To Exercise. MWL book, page 100.
1. Exercise burns calories
2. Calories continue to burn after exercise
3. Exercise counteracts plateaus
4. Exercise suppresses appetite
5. Exercise reduces insulin
6. Exercise protects and increases muscle mass

Exercise you can live with. MWL book, page 106-107

Aerobics: The best kind of exercise. Walking, running, cycling, & swimming are not only enjoyable but highly efficient ways to lose weight. (Choose exercise that you can continue to do without burn out. Walking is wonderful, you can do it anywhere and you can vary the intensity!)

Benefits of weight training:
Build a stronger body
Build a shapelier body
Strengthen ligaments
Improve bone density
Help prevent musculoskeletal injury
Elevate metabolism
Increase stamina
Elevate blood levels of HDL cholesterol

Your New Daily Exercise Plan: MWL Book Page 109

2. Make exercise a part of each day.
3. Choose an activity that you have always enjoyed and do it at least four times per week.

5. Consider investing in a membership in a YMCA, YWCA, or health and fitness club
6. Ask a friend to become your exercise partner
7. Go dancing, a great aerobic (and romantic) exercise
8. Join a walking or hiking club.
9. Check with your local adult-education program for exercise programs.
10. Keep an exercise journal.

Establishing a healthy way of life from page 127 of the MWL book.

Step 4. Visualize Yourself as Healthy
Step 5. Make a Commitment: Itís Magic
Step 6. Ensure That Your Environment Supports Your Goals
Step 7. Alter Your Coping Mechanisms
Step 8. Join A Support Group
Step 9. Reward Yourself
Step 10. Keep It Simple
