Today, I felt impressed to address self-esteem. Low self-esteem In particular

What is low self-esteem?

Low self-esteem is a thinking disorder in which an individual sees him/herself as inadequate, unlovable, and/or incompetent. Once formed, this negative view permeates every thought, producing faulty assumptions and ongoing self-defeating behavior.

Are you wondering if you have low self-esteem? Many people with anxiety, panic disorders and depression also live with low self-esteem, so it’s a good thing to explore what we mean by low self-esteem and its symptoms.

Number one on my list is and always has been...

Do you have a lot of recurrent self-critical thoughts?
This can be a sign of low self-esteem. Over the years I’ve had my share of these negative thoughts. Periodically I still do. But then that's the depression talking more than the anxiety or panic disorders. With me now, it's not so much the physical appearance but more so about feeling worthy, being good enough, but there are those who fight the feeling of their appearance because they have come to feel that what's on the inside is also portrayed as their physical appearance and feeling despondent, inadequate, unlovable, and/or inept can most certainly make one feel undesirable, unattractive, unappealing and it just gets more complicated from there.

Fear of Making Mistakes
Do you fear making mistakes? People with low self-esteem feel a lot of guilt and shame when they make mistakes. When mistakes happen it feels so catastrophic that you try to avoid them at all costs. And the more you do the more you make has been my experience.
This came up for me almost 24/7 with working at the Review.

Hard to Say No
Just like wanting to please others by going along with their ideas and opinions, you might also find yourself not able to say no when faced with requests. This is also known as a lack of assertiveness and again is frustrating for other people.

I’ve gotten better with this, but there have been times when I wanted to say no but instead said yes. And then felt resentful or kind of dragged my heels.. or worse yet simply backed out. Not being able to say no is related to your fear that other people won’t like you if you turn them down.

Social Withdrawal
When you feel bad about yourself all the time, you will naturally start to withdraw from other people. If it’s hard to say no, you can’t voice your opinions, and you’re always apologizing—it’s no wonder you don’t want to be around people! This can be at the root of some cases of social anxiety too, so consider if this might be one reason why you can’t be around people.

Sensitivity to Criticism
When people criticize you, how do you feel? If you are oversensitive and become upset over the slightest bit of criticism, this can be a sign of low self-esteem. I know people who react with anger when they feel as though they are being criticized. So—sensitivity can come in many forms.

Physical Symptoms
Low self-esteem symptoms can also show up in a psychosomatic way, meaning that your body becomes involved. Headache, stomachache, and insomnia could indicate that you’re feeling stressed out or bad all the time. Don’t ignore your body.

Putting on a Show
Some people with low self-esteem will try to put on a show to hide it. Someone who comes across as very boastful and arrogant could in fact be living with low self-esteem. The schoolyard bully is a classic example of this; people who put others down to build themselves up are lacking in self-esteem.

Self Critical Thoughts
Do you have a lot of recurrent self-critical thoughts? This can be a sign of low self-esteem. Over the years I’ve had my share of these negative thoughts. Often they are things we pick up from other people or things we tell ourselves after failures. If you say bad things about yourself to yourself a lot, that’s a sign of low self-esteem.

Lack of Motivation
Lack of motivation can be a sneaky sign of low self-esteem. If you have given up in a certain area of your life such as school, work, or romance, it could be that you no longer have confidence that you will ever achieve success in that area.

I experienced this for a little while in graduate school, when it seemed like everything was an uphill battle and I would never be finished.

Not Taking Credit for Success
When someone offers you a compliment, do you say “Thank you” or do you say, “Oh thanks, but it’s not really that… X.” Downplaying compliments or not being able to take credit for your abilities, skills, or successes can be a sign of low self-esteem. While you might think you are just being “humble,” humble people are still able to recognize when they’ve done well. If you are never able to do that, it could be because of low self-esteem.

Believing Others Are More Capable
Do you always feel like everyone is better than you at doing things? This can be especially true if you have social anxiety. I remember when I used to live with a public speaking phobia, I felt like everyone in the world was a better public speaker than me. This can be a really hard belief to shake if you live with social anxiety and it’s become ingrained over a long period of time.

Fortunately, you are not doomed to live with low self-esteem symptoms forever! Self-esteem can be built through therapy, self-help books, and personal development, so I encourage you to work on it.

Remember: good self-esteem is not feeling that you are better than other people. Rather, it’s knowing that all humans have equal worth.

So, today I would like to offer something that has helped me.

I am very ugly
So, don't try to convince me that
I am a beautiful person
Because at the end of the day,
I hate myself in every single way.
And I'm not going to lie to myself by saying
There is beauty inside of me that matters
So, rest assured I will remind myself
That I am a worthless, terrible person
And nothing you will say will make me believe
that I still deserve love.
Because no matter what
I am not good enough to be loved.
I am in no position to believe that
Beauty does exist within me
Because whenever I look in the mirror I always think
Am I as ugly as people say?

Now, repeat after me...

Am I as ugly as people say?
Because whenever I look in the mirror I always think,
Beauty does exist within me.
I am in no position to believe that
I am not good enough to be loved.
Because no matter what
I still deserve love.
And nothing you will say will make me believe
That I am a worthless, terrible person
So, rest assured I will remind myself
There is beauty inside of me that matters
And I'm not going to lie to myself by saying
I hate myself in every single way.
Because at the end of the day,
I am a very beautiful person
So, don't try to convince me that
I am very ugly

Focusing on Awareness

We've all done it...reached our weight loss goal and deem ourselves “You’ve arrived when arrival shouldn't be the goal at all.”
I'm learning that there’s a paradox to weight loss: The more I operate from a place of urgent necessity, (I absolutely have to lose this extra weight. No if's and's or buts!) blame, shame, stress, or an obsessive focus on the scale, the fewer results I tend to see.

And even when I do achieve results, those results tend to be fleeting. Yo-yoing...ring a bell?

However, if more patient, embrace exploration and experimentation, focus on key behaviour changes over time, and detach myself from the scale, I tend to feel fR better, perform better, and see the numbers on the scale change.

Do you have a timetable for your results, (I no longer do) or are you focused on continued progress? ( I am now)
Do you identify with a health and fitness team (paleo, keto, etc.), or do you focus on what works for you? For myself, I focus on what works for me because there is no such thing as universal; the same thing does not work for everyone)

Are you focused on shortcuts? Protocols? Destinations?

Are you being the Dieter? Or are you being the Detective? (finding what works for you best)

I've been doing so well. As in seriously rocking this health and wellness thing. In fact, if I weren’t so modest, I might say I've been a meal planning, calorie-burning, goal-crushing machine. The numbers my doctor is watching are even getting closer to where they should be.

And then, it happens: I have a bad day. Sometimes it's just a not-so-good day, but other times it's a very, very bad day. I'm talking horribly dreadful.

There are, of course, lots of different definitions of "bad day."

When it comes to my weight loss journey it might include the obvious blunders of eating some or all the wrong foods or choosing couch time over going for my walk. But did you know that it could also mean overdoing it with too much of the right foods and not getting enough sleep?

With me, however, on top of these other things, it's letting negative thoughts or influences dispirit my mood and motivation. In a nutshell, a bad day occurs when I feel myself sliding backward, whether slightly or severely, in the opposite direction.
The good news? I've come to realize and accept that a bad day however bad, is just that—a day. Like so much else in our life's journey, it is temporary. And in just a few short hours, I'll get to push the reset button simply by waking up to a brand-new morning.

When I stop and really take the time to delve into my past as far back as childhood, my experience with anxiety actually started once I hit age thirteen and puberty. I had constant anxiety -- just getting on the bus in the morning and then while in school. I just didn't know it at the time, but my childhood was painted with the tension, fear, and stress that all stems from uncontrolled anxiety. And how? By being bullied.

There were two Danny's who liked to torment me. Until the day they didn't. That was the day I lost it on them.  Everyone else had gone out for recess and I took to staying in. They stayed behind that day just long enough to give me the gears and I simply reached my breaking point, picked up the teacher's heavy wooden desk and threw it against the wall pinning the one Danny between the two. The other managed to escape out the door and go for the teacher.

Over the years, however, without even realizing it or knowing how I did learn to control it. Especially when I started into the work world and chose my profession working as a nurse in Gerontology for thirty years since the age of sixteen and right up until...I couldn't anymore.

I've learned and am learning a lot more since then.

One being that Anxiety is not an emotion like anger, sadness, fear, hurt, or guilt. Anxiety cannot be felt about past events. All emotions can be felt about past, future, and current events, with the exception of anxiety. That is because it is not an emotion! It is however in how we have come to understand the stress response.

The stress response can be triggered by many things, even foods and beverages that do not agree with our nervous system. It can of course be triggered by real-life stresses, such as the loss of a job, meeting financial obligations and fear of serious illnesses. But the most common trigger is when we focus on what we do not want to happen. That is when we trigger the stress response, and from there, we have a rushing cascade of hormones that send us into fight or flight.
Anxiety ranges from minor worry to full-on panic attacks. We can even have generalized anxiety where we are in constant worry or a stressed state, and we do not know what is causing it.
With these different kinds of anxiety, the method of restoring calm is the same. We turn off the brain's stress response, getting the brain to tell the body we are safe, the body then stops the cascade of stress hormones and reactions, and we come out of fight-or-flight mode. The next step is learning how to rewire your brain so that your thoughts stop triggering your stress response so that it does not advance into anxiety mode.

We know it is toxic long after we have been living in an unhealthy state for months or even years. Our nervous system has two modes: rest and digest or fight and flight. At first, we don't even notice we are in fight or flight. It becomes part of our mode of operation. We use the nervous energy we get from the stress hormones to keep us going at a great cost. When we are in stress mode, we are out of healing mode.

The opposite of feeling anxiety is being in a state of healing and rest. If we are in anxiety for a prolonged period of time, our body shuts down and suppresses healing. It puts energy towards running away from the threats and not towards fighting what is threatening our health and wellness; diseases such as cancers, digesting and absorbing nutrition optionally, and keeping a robust immune system. It is only after many months of living in stress mode that we start to see and feel the physical and toxic effects it has had on our body.

You ask if some anxiety is necessary. Anxiety is not the bad guy we have made it out to be. In fact, it is actually a good thing! It is the red warning light on our internal dashboard saying, "WARNING! WARNING! Something is wrong! We are under threat!" Without the sensation of anxiety, we would live in stress mode until we just dropped dead from exhaustion. Anxiety warns us that we have been living in fight or flight for too long.

We need the fight-or-flight response to help us survive. To get out of a burning building, steer a car away from an accident, save a child from being hit by a car. In those moments, we want our bodies to go into that superhuman mode. Shunt blood away from the digestion and logic centers of our brain to bring more blood to our limbs. We lose the ability to control critical thinking and complex problem solving so that our brain allows us to go into reaction mode. We are making quick decisions powerfully so we can survive in that moment of events. But in these quick moments, we are so focused on the task at hand that we have little time to feel anxiety, let alone suffer from it.
We become present in the moment, fighting or fleeing. This rush of adrenalin in these moments only lasts a few minutes. Once the threat is over, we can go back to rest and digest mode. The problem is, we don't. We have created a way of thinking that continually triggers the stress mode, much like living in a war-torn country would do.

Our body is always listening to our thoughts and perceiving threats we think about as actual threats that are happening. When we can learn to change how we think, when we learn that we can change our focus, even for a time, we can stop telling our body to trigger the stress response. It is the prolonged stress response that triggers anxiety.

This is by no means a cure-all, but it is a strong tool that I am learning for my own Anxiety and Panic Disorders. I'm also learning that it's okay on the days you feel so good that it feels you are over it and then it hits me all over again. It's okay to fall apart even after I thought I had it under control. It does not mean I'm weak. Healing is messy. There is no timeline for healing.

I also know that I'm a lot. I'm a lot of woman. I have a lot of depth. A lot of personality.A lot of dreams. A lot of emotions. A lot of love. So, yeah I'm a lot...a lot of great things too.

So now, when I'm having a bad day I remember that I've managed to get through every bad day I've had. I'll make it through this one too.

During those times when our lives are filled with what seems to be constant change and growth, it is important to remember that we need to be gentle with ourselves. Since it can be easy to use our energy to keep up with the momentum of our lives, we may not be aware of the fact that we are much more likely to run ourselves down. When things seem to be moving quickly, it is especially essential that we make a point to slow down and be gentle with ourselves.

It might be difficult to notice what is happening to us for we may be so caught up in the whirlwind of our lives that we lose sight of the direction in which things are heading. Being gentle with ourselves doesn't mean that we don't accomplish things. Instead it means that we honor ourselves on an ongoing basis and take care of the needs of our bodies.

This means different things to different people. For instance, it could mean having a session with a healer; taking a remedy, herbs, or vitamins; or getting extra sleep. Putting our energy into ourselves in this way helps create space for a more positive, loving, and accepting view of our lives. By setting the intention to do so, we will be more cognizant of our energy levels on a daily basis and more able to replenish them as needed.

The more we are able to treat our bodies with gentleness, the more tenderness and compassion we will call forth into our lives. Learning to understand and pay attention to what our self needs will in turn allow us to fill our lives with unlimited loving and healing energy and to truly take care of the things that mean the most to us.

We've all had them and maybe even still do. Those "If Onlys"

"If only" I had more time in the day to make exercise a regular part of my routine. "If only" there was a gym closer to home, or if it wasn’t so cold (or so hot) outside, or if you had more energy or more confidence. And with no "extra" time in your day for a routine at home what makes you think you'd get to a gym down the street?

The truth is, the only thing holding you back with all of those "if onlys" is you. Because the reality is that if you wait for the perfect conditions to materialize before you start moving, you’ll never get started. As the old saying goes, "an object in motion stays in motion." If you move your body every day, even just a little, those consistent efforts will propel you toward your goals over time.

While we should make wise use of the "if onlys" the inherent hazard is to get caught up in a nonstop spin cycle. Whether you’ve never exercised a day in your life these simple ways will help to get you on the path to better health and a more active lifestyle. Remember, the hardest step is always the very first one.

And while it’s fine to strive for weight loss and a healthy, fit physique, try not to get too caught up with that alone. Instead, focus on how much better you feel, the benefits to your overall wellness and longevity. Those deeper incentives will help keep you going even when the scale or measuring tape doesn’t reflect your efforts.

As with any activity, the more you follow through, the easier it becomes to stick to a routine. Remember "Take it one day at a time "You'll soon discover what works best for you, new habits will become fixed in place and progress will happen, will build and hold your motivation to keep going."

Then, as you see what your body is capable of, it will become easier to do that workout consistently at least every other day.

So, don't inherit the hazard of getting caught up in a nonstop spin cycle of "if onlys". or overthinking the endless scenarios that can play out like infinite connecting passageways in your mind that lead to dead ends in a maze... Like each choice we make with any shade of differing degree will propel us through that doorway changing our lives forever.

And if you're starting over,

Seek the win, big or small. Every time you do the right thing or the difficult thing it's a win. Acknowledge them. Winning is accumulative. The wins are out there. Seek the win.
Mike Gillette

If we've stuck with it, enduring even the most difficult times and situations our endeavours will likely begin to bear fruit, making us finally feel that we are realizing our goals. This developing conscientiousness can be a boon while pursuing our purpose as we gain a new sense of confidence from understanding the scope of our accomplishments. And, if you stumble make it a part of the dance. It makes us feel more fulfilled as we consider that we are no doubt far more established than previously imagined. As a result, we may be inspired to reevaluate the list of ambitions/goals initially composed in order to ensure that it corresponds to our current level of self-assurance.

Our comprehension of the hard work we have done to achieve our current levels of prosperity is an important aspect of our ability to derive fulfillment from our accomplishments. When we downplay our labours in order to appear modest, we often forget how truly amazing you are that you have been able to realize your goals thus far. Similarly, others may interpret our modesty as being suggested that you attained your success with ease.
We tend to feel more confident about our future prospects when we take a realistic view of our efforts in the past and present. Since we understand how hard we are capable of working, we are less apt to shy away from potentially rewarding challenges. The conscientiousness with which you review your achievements today will help you see that you have paid your dues.

Nothing quite asks, “are you ready?” like the word Monday.

Like clean sheets on a bed or an empty sink after all the dishes are put away, Mondays are the chance to admire and embrace your clean slate and set yourself up for success. When you begin to see Monday as a fresh and new opportunity, you approach it with excitement instead of dread. What can you tackle that you weren’t able to do last week?

Visualize your Monday. From the time your alarm goes off to the time you’re ready for bed, think about what, where, when and how you need to do each task. Is the flow reasonable or do you need to delegate or reschedule?
Hit the ground running on Monday morning by taking a few minutes on Sunday night to check-in with your “work self.”
Write your Monday to-do list. What are the top three things you want to accomplish?
Visualize the rest of the week. Is there anything out of the ordinary that you need to be ready for?

Well, after the long weekend, I feel refreshed and ready to focus on my health again. I had a little spat there where I was just throwing in the towel. I was kind of hanging on by a thread, but that seems to have passed...at least for now. And, back at it! We got this! Monday is a new start! emoticon

Well, I had a very rough weekend. Couldn't shake the anxiety or depression! Name an emotion and I was feeling it; fear, anger, hate, were at the top of the list, and my chest was so tight I'd catch myself holding my breath for long periods of time. I just wanted to throw something, break something, scream at everybody and anything.

Thankfully, today that has all subsided and I'm back to the new normal me with purpose in hand and ready to tackle what I need to to get it done.
