I didn't make the seven hours of walking I had planned to do. I walked four hours.

I have no excuses. Week two will be better.
The good result was that I have become more active in my home.
I'm disappointed but accept my lack of perfection.

Haven't done any exercise yet today, but it's coming. Was starving when I woke up so I had to eat breakfast first. I figure in about an hour I'll do 2 miles with Leslie. Snow is still coming down, so shoveling will be later today.

Lots of opportunities for exercise today!

emoticon Don't think I'm going to make it to the heartball - I had 9 inches when I started shoveling @ 7:30 this AM, and it hasn't stopped. I live on a back, back road, so even when I shovel out - the road doesn't get touched. But I was thinking half full - you never know. Stopped when I started getting out of breathe, didn't want the EMT's to be the first to use my shoveled walk and parking area. I warmed up with a one mile job w/ Leslie Sansone. Will probably clean a little, to some strength on the ball and read The Spark!
Happy Saturday everyone.

After many months of not seeing results I decided it was time to think about getting a personal trainer. The Y was having a special buy some and get some free, so I did it and had my first session (30 Min.) today. My doctor told me I had to lose 10 pounds by the end of April and I just know I wasn't going to able to do it alone, so we will see. I came home after that and did the whole 5 mile WATP, so I feel I got in a really good workout today emoticon

Wore a bright red sweatshirt, and even though we were told to go home early because of the impending storm - which HAS hit, I did a brisk walk around school for 20 min. that was after my 4 mile walking video this AM.

Working at the Heartball tomorrow - hopefully it will be a success with it happening on top of a mountain and we are supposed to be getting around a foot of snow.

Eating healthy - got all my veggies and fruits, heart healthy fats (a limited amount).

Well, I got here because my families both have strong heart disease genes and I started graying at 29. I'm 41 and have kidney failure which raises my chance for heart related problems.... so here I am! emoticon

How did I get here. Let me count the ways. Too much fried food and eating everything I wanted to excess, smoking & drinking, heart disease on my fathers side, and sitting on my butt. That should about do it. Plus I'm sure there are other things I didn't think about. I am now staying within my calorie range(under 2,000 per day), staying away from fat, watching sodium, and working on my cholestrol. I'm a little more active, but not near enough. That's my biggest challenge is to get active. I've had 4 heart attacks that I know of, quadruple bypass, and diabetes, but I'm still shooting for a long full life.

Hi my name is melanie, from NJ & NC I split my time between both.
I started having trouble with my triglycerides in 2004 after a brain injury/coma (to long of a story).
I was 42, Then in 2006 I started having A-fibs and put on Metropolol and flecinide (I'll look up spelling)The flecinide started failing two yrs ago and was just started on sotorol. I want to be healthy again and get off this extra weight, it added on few pounds since I started last week, scared about that, I worked so hard at taking it off.
I pledge to do better, with lower sodium intake, stay on a low fat and low cholestrol healthy living life style.
Continue with my Daily Challenges.

It looks if our challenge this week is to explain what has got us here. Well, I have high cholesterol for one. Then last March I hiked the Grand Canyon with my father, sister and brother in law. When I stepped on the scale at her house, I almost died (165 lbs). How did that happen!!! I decided then that I was going to lose weight, get my cholesterol down, and live to be 90 or 100 years old. I am down to 145 lb. Yeah!!! Still more to go, plus learn to maintain. So here I am.

From what I've read in the posts, we all have a recurring theme, don't we...health issues that affect our hearts, but we also have a recurring theme, that we all are making changes in our life style that now include exercise and healthy eating.

I was diagnosed with pre hypertension in the mid 90's, put on Metropolol and of course I was morbidly obese. My genetic make up even with being morbidly obese, I am fortunate don't have any problem with cholesterol. However triglycerides were high, so I was put on Fish oil and that number came down. I did experience A-fib, that stopped on its own each time it happened...for several years. I now have a Cardiologist, have had the tests (echo, stress, nuclear stress, even had an echo while in A-fib). My upper left atrium is slightly enlarged from being morbidly obese (I am now in the obese range, and close to a BMI for being overweight). The Cardiologist was encouraged that I was serious about losing weight, unfortunately he said my left atrium would always remain stay enlarged.
He has begun to wean me off the BP meds, and will re evaluate next July. I am also on a med for my heart to not go into A-fib.
So we are all in this together!

I am taking things slow, but I do monitor my blood pressure. I do have high blood pressure and high cholesterol which I am on medication. I have a family history of high blood pressure and heart attacks in my family and this is something I want to get control of. When I had to go on medication I fought it hard, but I just kept going up in weight. Moving is important and I really want to be sedentary, but know I can't if I want to get my health under control. I have the 28 day calendar up on my mirror in my bedroom. I have got to move it, move it, move it.

I totally belong here. Heart disease runs on both sides of my family including heart attacks, strokes and high blood pressure. Right now I do not have high blood pressure but since I will be 44 in June, I know my risk of developing it is increasing rapidly. I am morbidly obese and now I am trying to do something about it!!! I am glad to be here with this team!!! emoticon

Snow shoed for 52 minutes today, 2.8 miles according to my pedometer. I felt very tired and run down today, I wonder if I tried to do too much too fast this week after being sick. I do not want to get sick again! So I slacked off a bit today.

Hi, I'm Sarah and I am 47 years old. To my knowledge I don't have heart disease...yet...but my mother and maternal grandmother both did and last time I went to the dentist my BP was borderline high. Since then I have joined SparkPeople and lost 10.6 lbs. I am exercising daily so hopefully when I get my physical this month the news will be good!

Hi, I'm Gail. I'm 38. Heart disease runs in my family. My dad had a heart attack before age 50 and has had 2 strokes since. My mom has high blood pressure. My blood pressure is on the higher side of normal. I really don't want to be on meds.

I incorporate fitness at least 5 days a week. I had been pretty cardio focused while training for a half marathon. I'm working on trying to balance my cardio with resistance training -- because I read strength training can help reduce blood pressure.

I've also made significant progress in changing my nutrition. It's not perfect -- one of my goals is to continue to bring my sodium down. I'm finding the best way is to cut out all the processed crap.

I heard this on the radio yesterday:

Chances of dying by a shark- 1:200,000,000
Chances of dying by a bee or other poisonous insect - 1:100,000
Chances of dying in a tornado - 1:60,000
Chances of dying in a car accident - 1:100
Chances of dying by other accident - 1:36
Chances of dying of cancer 1:7
Chances of dying of HEART DISEASE - 1:5

Hi there...I just read the Nancy's blog and decided I needed to join this team! I am 40 years old and I have a HUGE family history of heart disease....my father died when he was 45 ...now he had no physical activity, he drank and smoked and I have VOWED that I will NOT die the way my dad did...My grandmother also died of an MI when she was fairly young ( I think she was in her early 60's and in my opinion that is very young)

My plan of action : Get my BMI down to a healthy weight...
Increase my physical activity....
Continue to go to the doctor at least once a year to have my cholesterol checked and my BP checked...

At this point all of my numbers are good...I consider myself VERY lucky..because of that I need to keep doing my part to stay healthy!!

~~~ CINDY ~~~
You never know how strong you are until strong is the only choice you have...
Trust in God with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding...in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your path straight...
My next mini goal weight is 218...
Hi!
I am new to this team, but I think I belong here. I have a strong history of heart disease in my family. I am on 4 prescriptions to keep my self well, and curb my hypertension. My paternal grandmother died in her early 60's of heart disease and there has been 2 open heart surgeries in my family.
Thanks to SPARK I have become more active and am eating sooo much better than a year ago. I have lost some weight but I am still a work in progress. My Dr. is amazed at how well I am doing. She asked what I was doing to improve my health so, I told her I joined Spark and she wanted to know all about it.
Watching out for my heart is a main concern. I want to do all I can to keep it a healthy, happy heart.
Hi Team,
I am 53 years old with high blood pressure, diabetes, and because of these 2 conditions, my doctor thinks my cholesterol is also a little high. I am taking medication for all 3 conditions, but I also get some sort of aerobic activity at least 5 days a week and usually 6 or 7. I have changed our eating habits and limited our sodium intake. I say our because my husband is completely on board with this and very supportive. We have a family history of high blood pressure, my dad died of a massive heart attack at age 70. I started my lifestyle change in September of 2007. I still struggle with my weight. Even though we eat right, I have trouble with portion control. I am working on that daily!
I was very happy to see this team start up, and I am completely ready to work on this. I already get the required amount of exercise in, but this encourages me to keep it up! I vow to be more faithful in tracking my food. That is my worst area and one that I really need to focus on.
Good luck to all!
I was reading the exercise article "the Heart of a Woman" recommended by Coach Nancy and I'm worried that I still won't recognize a heart attack when it happens. These symptoms are not something that will trigger the response "Heart Attack!" for me. Rather I think I would still be prone to thinking it was just something that would pass.
Those women who have had heart attacks, what made you contact the doctor?
I walked 40 minutes on the beach with my dog. Through in some bootcamp moves, walking lunges, jumping jacks, scissor stride jumps and walking squats to get the heart rate up.
A little bit of everything for me today. 2 miles of walking for 45 minutes, 1 mile from Walk At Home 5 Day Slim down for 14 minutes, 5 minutes of shoveling, 1.6 miles of snow shoeing for 32 minutes, a SP core workout on ball for 5 minutes, and last but not least, the 10 minute pilates mat workout from Walk At Home Slim & Sleek. Total 111 minutes.
I've had jury duty this week and I can tell you all you do is sit and wait, eat and wait and sit and wait to be called. Boring! It has been a difficult week for me because I'm used to at least some exercise during the day...now I'm not getting much at all.
But I have fit in some in the evenings...
So to cath up...
Every morning I do strength exercises with an 8lb weight. Plus 30 side crunches with the weight.
Monday - nothing =(
Tuesday - walked for an hour at the church (love the family life center)
Wednesday - will go to the gym tonight to do cardio (eliptical, treadmill and maybe a bike)
Good luck to my team!
Hi Everybody!
I'm 34 years old and a single mom to two AMAZING teen boys. I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy (heart failure) over a year ago.
I'm now, oddly enough, the healthiest I've ever been in my life, the happiest too!!
Yesterday at the cardiologists office (you can read my blog for the details) he told me I had FIFTY more beautiful years here on this earth if I continued my lifestyle changes! I'M GOING TO DO JUST THAT. 2010 is the year of Christy!
I'm taking care of me (and my beautiful sons of course) first, for the first time ever.
I hope this team will help me with my goals!
Hugs and Good Vibes to all of you!!
