JC is expensive and while their food is portion controlled, what happens later on? I could never afford to do that and why cook for the family and yours is already done?

Years ago when I lived up north, for two years I was involved in TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly). They were a great group to belong to. Cost was reasonable as they are non-profit. Plus you have to have a doctor's note with your desired weight goal, not from a chart. No fad diets allowed. I was thinking of joining one of the local chapters where I live now, but can't due to work hours.

So...thanks for being here for me SP! AND the cost is right! lol

Have a great day everyone. God bless.

I also do Jenny Craig, and get the 30% discount. I try and stick with the real food on the program. There is only me to fix dinner and after cooking for 6 people most of my life it is kinda nice not to have to. I mostly follow and to eat non Jenny food at time, it works for me. With the community of Spark and the other things I get from this site, I'm happy.

Thanks everyone.

I actually got on the scale there (it was not pretty, as I had just drank a ton of water and eaten lunch...and it wasn't my normal naked weight) and I was at 158.8. UGH. At home on Saturday, I was 153 --- I know its clothes, food, and water in the stomach, but STILL. More important to me was the measurements, which we'll do every 4 weeks.

I like JC because its individual and not a meeting, so I get to blather and someone is payed to listen! So, I spend $25 on food today and got 2 desserts (a cheesecake and a lemon cake), a box of protein bars, 2 dinners (a pizza and my favorite entree which was potstickers with this yummy whole grain rice mix), and 3 of the maple nut hot cereals. And, I do love my consultant Liz, who is wonderful...and who just had another baby and is loosing the last 15 lbs she has to go.

Renewing is important --- even if I don't go for a whole year, by renewing I keep my plan for life and if I don't renew and wanted to come back, I'd have to REJOIN (big fee) and then I wouldn't get a 30% discount on the food, which makes a big difference, when you realize what I got today included the discount...it would have been $7.50 more.

So, I'm hoping that KNOWING I'm going in next Thursday and that I want to be successful not just for me, but to see her 'proud' (sounds dumb, but true)---its important for me not to 'let people down'. She saw me loose 40 lbs with her and knows I can do it...so....we'll see what this week brings.

I think it’s a “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” issue. Your system and having the help of someone you trust seems to be big factors for you. If it’s working, keep doing it. If it stops working, look elsewhere. Just don’t STOP. Be persistent and unrelenting in your quest to lose your weight and get fit. I believe you are on the right track.

I have tried many programs, including WW and NutraSystem - but not Jenny Craig. The only reason I did not try Jenny Craig was the cost.

Each person has to decide what works for them, if buy a few foods allow you to go to a meeting that works - I say go for it.

We each have to find our own accountability, mine is through Jesus, my church family and my pastor.

One of the big benefits for JC for you is that you know the program from the inside out. It also sounds like you have an established good relationship with a person there and that in-person helps you round out your accountability needs. So really, it's almost as if you answered your question. Renew, try it out, you can always stop renewing next time it comes up! :)

I wanted to also say that WW's in-person meetings can be great, but sometimes the scheduling is a challenge and almost everything depends on the leader. I lost a lot of weight with my group because the in-person aspect really helped motivate me to keep to my plan. After you make lifetime at WW, you don't pay anything as long as you are maintaining.

Of course if you are not comfortable with Weight Watchers meetings, I also do WW online because I really don't care for the whole group thing, but the weekly weigh in does help with the accountability factor. With WW you can just go weigh in once a week and not stay for the meeting. Another suggestion would be seek the advice of a nutritionist or dietician, many of the larger grocery store chains has a nutritionist for consultation, many OB/GYN offices also have a nutritionist on staff.

Just a thought.

But whatever works for you I would say great!

I think you should stay with JC even if you only buy those few things. Yes it is only snacks and breakfast foods but if your life is even partially like mine there are some days you do not have time to put a nutritious breakfast or snack together.

Also as someone else suggested Weight Watcher Meetings but that might be too much of a group thing. When I did Weight Watchers I did it online (personally was not fond of the group thing)

Although I agree with a lot that's been said here about processed food and food specifically made for a program, if you can see a professional once a week and CHOOSE to buy or not buy some of their food - go for it. I love SparkPeople but a one-on-one with someone you have worked with successfully and respect is fantastic.

Let me reput this here. I don't plan on buying lots of there food -- the idea is that with weekly meetings I'll be accountable. Its nice to have a face-to face meeting each week talking about my struggles and having someone how understands and motivates. So, I get their whole grain bkfast hot cereal (which is like Kashi hot cereal --- if you call that processed, fine by me, its good) and some of the bkfast cheesecakes and cakes (that are about 150 cals per) and have a weekly meeting, maybe that will motivate me...but then again, maybe not.

I love SP and I love the boards, but its different than a weekly meeting with someone saying "how did you do this week" and giving them a number from the scale.

As for their food, thats a totally personal thing and I don't want to make this into "don't eat processed food," heck...whole wheat bread is a processed food and I find nothing 'bad' when some people choose to rely on things like a premade heat and eat meal. It works for them. I am not trying to eat clean (if anyone has looked at the true clean eating way of life, it is TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH) and its not something I could do for life.

Side note: I'm a big believer in the idea behind JC -- it teaches individual portion control, it teaches you how to eat (by doing exchanges of food) so that you don't rely on their food for life, but in the end, its like any plan...if you don't put into practice what they teach you, you will gain weight back. Side note: I stopped eating JC and lost 20 more lbs --- because I took what it taught and followed it with my own food.

I would also agree that thin may not mean healthier if you are eating processed foods. There is so much good food to eat that is good for you. There are farmer's markets, huge produce sections in the grocery stores, and so on. I think if you learned what to feed yourself to get healthy, you would be way ahead of the game in the long run. I just think whatever we are doing to be healthier needs to be something we can do for a lifetime, or it doesn't count. As someone said, that's my opinion. Good luck with your choice.

I was having the same issues regarding WW and its accountability. I never went to meetings, I did it online. In my opinion, SP is the best because you are totally accountable AND knowing the breakdown of macronutrients is so so beneficial. Oh and the food is real. You can do it. The message boards are an awesome source of support too. Good luck!!

Personally, I am not a fan of Jenny Craig or any of the programs that require that you purchase their food. Like the previous post, what happens when you stop eating their food? I am also trying to limit processed foods as much as I can, and prepare most of my own meals. As for the accountability factor, I agree that can be a great motivator, but what about Weight Watchers meetings? Yes, WW membership costs, but you don't have to purchase additional products from them, and the support system of the meetings is great and the accountability factor is also there as you get weighed in weekly. There are also your Spark Friends for support, of course! And for accountability, use your Spark Page to track your progress towards your goals.

JENRD, if you are referring to the ABS diet for Women, there is a team for that on SP that you can join. They can support your goals. No diet is going to be a magic bullet that works (even with the exercise plan) on just your abs.

Otherwise, why spend the money on Jenny Craig? If you like only their snacks and one of their breakfasts, there are plenty of substitutes. In the world of real food.

Just my opinion.

I do like any processed food and have been working really hard to eliminate this more and more. I also read labels and if you read what is in the label and it is not readable or understandable then I would not buy. I don't think any program that requires you to eat only their food is a good program, because what happens when you don't use their food? I think cooking my own food is better and I control what is in and how it is produced.

I'm torn here.

Here is the deal. I belong to Jenny Craig --- I've successfully lost weight on their program. My rewards membership needs to be renewed (I am renewing it because it guarentees me lifetime membership and 30% off all food --- note, they no longer do the rewards program).

I liked the program for a few reasons, mostly for accountability and portion control. Its SUPER expensive and the food is all processed --- now, I have nothing against processed food, lol, but for the $$, its not that great...what is great is going in weekly to be accountable.

Ironically, my old consultant called yesterday to remind me to renew if I wanted...and she said she'd love me to come in, even just to chat.

They don't have a minimum food requirement for me to have weekly appts with the consultant...that is, I don't ahve to spend x$ per week, but I would need to purchase a few things.

I am going to go in and visit with the consultant today, just because she is someone who understands and listens to me go on. I have 10 lbs to loose (I lost 40 lbs seeing her in the past). She was so excited at my weight at 150 (I haven't been in in over a year and when I saw her last I was at 170)....but, I've been at 140 and then have been gaining.

I started with the ABS plan, and I do enjoy the food, but I'm not feeling slimmer after a week and I have not committed to it (I'm still that floppy fish trying to figure out what to do).

Anyway, I am just blathering here...wondering if I should buy some foods (I always loved their low-calorie snacks and one of the bkfasts) and then schedule weekly meetings again. Will that help me focus.

I think my husband will be like "give the ABs plan a chance..."...."you can't keep bouncing aroudn to different things..." etc. He was never a 'fan' of the idea of JC, but never objected either.

Anyway, thoughts? Comments?
