I'm still struggling to resist the carbage unfortunately. The last couple evenings, I was considering making a trip to the convenience store, or eating some sweetened oatmeal.

I think having that rack of pork ribs cooked and in the fridge has helped. I've been eating about eight ounces of meat a day, just prior to the dangerous evening hours. The ease of just zapping it up helps me go that way instead of carbage (which is always quick and easy prep).

Hmm, that is probably an insight I should keep in mind.

I drove my ex to brookings (he's pretty disabled, doesn't like to drive that far) and we got KFC for dinner (always kind of a trigger) and DQ on the way out of town. Then after we ate and I took him home, I did one of those "well, the day is shot anyway" and hit the convenience store.

I do a lot better if I never leave the house.

It seem pretty consistent for me, if I eat carbs in the evening, I'm hungry in the morning. It's 08:30, and I'm starving. I usually don't even think about food until 9 or 10, and then it's more like I feel I should get the day started.

Going to cut it off early today and shoot for a 24-hour fast again.

Good thing I only donate blood once every two months. Note - the second banana wasn't nearly as good as the first, and Goldfish crackers don't have that much flavor (I ate them anyway).

Fasted all day yesterday - just two mugs of bone broth with about 2 T of cream in each. Wasn't hungry at all, which surprised me. Still not hungry this morning, though I don't eat breakfast anyway. Will either have bone broth again for lunch and continue on to a 48 hour fast or break my fast at lunch today. We'll see.

Have started reading Life In The Fasting Lane: How to Make Intermittent Fasting a Lifestyle- and Reap the Benefits of Weight Loss and Better Health, by Jason Fung, Eve Mayer, and Megan Ramos. Pretty good, so far.

One of the things one of the authors mentions is that fasting can break the eating-by-the-clock habit. I have that big time. Lunch is supposed to be at 12:00 every day. Period. Supper is supposed to be at 4:30 or 5:00 every day. Period. I like the idea of breaking that habit, though, to be honest, I'm not sure what I would replace it with.

They also talk about how fasting is part of most of evolutionary life. We're designed for it. It's what our bodies expect and are built for. Makes sense to me.

And, yes, it's supposed to have lots of other health benefits beyond weight loss.

Is it just a bandwagon that I've jumped on? Could be. I jump onto bandwagon's often. Is it as good for us as the proponents say? Probably not. Will it hurt me? I assume (and hope!) not.

Anyway, my stays on bandwagons tend to be fairly short!

MAW: I totally agree with you – seems everyone has an opinion on fasting.

Thanks – I am hoping my way of fasting does bring some health benefits with it. Seems like the easy route to go….. I’m all for autophagy…… The idea of not eating for 24 hours or longer does not appeal to me at all (don't even think I could do it), plus it just doesn't seem right to me. I don't think not eating is a solution to weight loss????? But, then again, I think this "fasting" is supposed to be a health benefit not necessarily for weight loss?

I guess I'm doing another 24 hour fast today. Just got back from Mom's house and errands and have not interest at all in fixing anything to eat. Or eating anything, either, for that matter. I still have bone broth simmering away (need to get that portioned out and frozen today) so I poured myself a mug of that with a bit of cream and that should do me.

Found it. Looks like it impedes autophagy.

"If you’re strict and technical, then yes, collagen breaks a fast. There’s evidence that glycine—the most prominent amino acid in collagen—can inhibit autophagy, but it was a convoluted animal study where inhibiting autophagy with large doses of glycine after brain injury actually improved outcomes. It probably doesn’t apply to someone adding a scoop of collagen to their coffee. Besides, even if it slightly reduces autophagy, a little collagen won’t negatively impact ketosis, fat-burning, or energy intake.

I’m going to say “technically yes,” but “realistically no, collagen doesn’t break the fast.” Avoid if your main focus is autophagy, however."

I vaguely recall Mark discussing whether taking (as I remember) a dose of collagen peptides would break a fast. He was kind of yes, strictly speaking, but it was probably minor enough to not really make a difference. I suppose bone broth would be similar.

Charlene, I guess it depends on who you talk to. Jason Fung is very gung ho on bone broth while fasting. I think Mark Sisson says it's ok for some benefits of fasting but stops autophagy, which is one benefit. Who knows.

BTW, it sounds like you're doing 18 hour fasts most days. I've read that the benefits start after 12 hours of fasting, so you're doing great in that department!

NAYPOOIE: congrats on giving the fasting a try and succeeding.

For some reason the idea of not eating for 24 hours makes me think it will kill me. Obviously this is not true. Perhaps I’ll get the nerve to try a 24 hour fast. Not sure when that will be, at the moment, I’m hungry every couple of hours….. I am still doing some kind of fasting - I don't eat anything after dinner (which is usually 6 or 7 pm) and then I don't usually eat again until close to noon the next day.

MAW: I thought you weren’t allowed to have “protein” during a fast?

Hmm, well I did have splenda in my hot tea. No big, the basic idea of this fast was to help me control my eating, and I'm overall pleased with the result. The only problem is I ended up shorter on protein than I like. But I'll eat more normally tomorrow.

Definitely, not eating in the evening is the key. I need to make up some more hamburger patties so I can stuff myself with fat and protein if I feel I have to eat in the evening.

Naypooie, Jason Fung says it's ok to have tea, coffee and/or bone broth during a fast. No sweeteners, natural or un-, but a couple of teaspoons of heavy cream is ok. I found that a mug of bone broth with a bit of cream kept me from being hungry.

Well, I'm 22 hours into my 24 hour fast, and I'm hungry. I haven't really been hungry all day, just an occasional "I'm waiting" from my stomach. Not sure if I'm going to tough it out or not.

It has had the desired effect of keeping yesterday's food under control. Evening eating is killing me. That's when I hit the carbs if I'm going to (Saturday's birthday cake was an exception).

OMAD might work for me. At least occasionally. Have to think about that. The good news is that, Hey, I can not eat for 22 hours and not be hungry. Occasionally distracted by the thought of food, but not hungry or craving.

It's been a couple weeks since I hit my net carb daily goal, and that one was just barely within. It shows.

I'm planning to stop eating fairly early today, then do a 24 hour fast, see if I can kick myself out of this. Also going to stop buying microwave popcorn. I enjoy it too much to resist.

For some reason I have the silly feeling that because there is family here (though they're staying at Mom's house) I can - almost should! - eat differently all day long. Yes, I'm eating a bit differently at supper - I'm not weighing or measuring and there are more side dishes than usual and we're having watermelon for dessert - but there's no reason to be thinking I can/should graze my way through the day!
