Hmm...I was almost 2. :) It was probably around this time that my parents and I moved into the house that my parents still live at. I'm now married and have a kidlet of my own, but that's probably where I was 30 years ago today. :)

I was living in Yakima. The mother of a young daughter ( she was almost 2). I had driven her out to my sisters in Cowiche to leave her for the day to spend time alone with my then husband. I never made it back to Yakima till about 4 in the afternoon.

It was black as midnight at noon and it was very frightening. No one knew what the ash would do to our lungs or if there was gas in the ash to poison us. It fell like snow in large flakes but it was almost stifling warm.

When I first noticed something going on, it was the sky turned the most beautiful Turquoise I had ever seen. I had never seen the sky that color. We were out looking at my sisters blueberry bushes when we could hear like rain drops coming down. I had a white sweater on and saw that I was getting small grey spots on my sweater. That was when we knew. We hollered for everyone to get indoors and ran for the house, scooping up kids as we went.

The chickens went to roost and cows settled in for the night. It was very bizarre. Shortly after noon the area around us took on a pink sort of hue and we thought it was finally letting up, so I packed my daughter in the car and headed home. It is about 25 miles back to Yakima. It was the most frightening drive I have ever been on. You could not tell where the edge of the road was. When you saw a street light you did not know what side you were suppose to be on to pass it. An animal came out onto the road in front of me and my first thought was "What is a camel doing out here?" Funny how the mind plays tricks on you.

I finally made it back to town and swore I would never do that again. We had to deal with several inches of ash all over everything. They say I was lucky that my car did not choke on the ash and break down on the way home.

I was stuck at home for several days while they tried to decide what to do with the ask and to get it all to settle out of the air. It ruined our roof from the weight of it so the insurance paid to replace it.

Afterwards the ash was so fertile that we have the biggest strawberries ever that year. Trees were coming up everywhere from seeds on the lawns and from what was in the ash.

Different places in the state got different types of ash. I know some places got it where it was fine as talcum powder, Yakima has sandy ash that got very heavy when wet.

If you have the choice to sit it out or dance: I hope you'll dance!!

(up in Bellingham) Through our haze of middle school grandure, we kind of kept half an eye on that cloud and the weather reports regarding wind direction. At the time, we thought it'd be kind of cool to be down there, and have school cancelled for a volcano. Not your typical closure excuse.

I was 15, living in Jacksonville, working at the Boys Club as an art instructor, waiting for school to start so I could attend 10th grade at Raines High School. Boy do I remember how excited I was about finally getting into high school - and RAINES for crying out loud. Of course, once it happened, it totally sucked, but in August before the school year started I had no idea that it was gonna blow chunks.

""Dwarfs can often do the work of giants when they are transformed by the almost magic power of great mental concentration. But giants will only do the work of dwarfs when they lack this power. It is the man that concentrates on its every possibility that makes an art of both his work and his life."---Theron Q. Dumont

I was in Satsop, Washington on 20 acres overlooking the Satsop River valley under the shadow of the recently shut down nuke construction site. Two young children, my wife and I... horses, chickens, a couple of calves... yup. Those were the days. We were also still recovering from the ash fallout.

May 18th 1980.. Max and I had taken my Brownie Troop out camping at Camp Niwana, in Kitsap County, that week-end. It must have been the Mount St. Helen's Blast that we heard, but we didn't know that was what it was until later in the morning when we heard the news on the radio. That afternoon after all the girls were picked up, our family drove to a open valley in Port Orchard and watched the ash plum in the sky headed East. For days afterward our outdoor plants were covered with a light grey ash.

I was a Senior in High School, and I'd been out the night before. My sister woke me up yelling "Mount Saint Helens blew up!"

My Aunt and Uncle lived in Toppenish (near Yakima) and experienced the complete darkness after the explosion.

When I went to school the next day I found out the parents of a girl I'd attended High School with had been killed in the explosion. It was very sad.

We were in Vancouver, but we didn't have a view of St. Helens. I was sewing that morning, without my usual radio companion. DH came in and started complaining - he was trying to watch a golf match on TV and they kept breaking in with some kind of news about a volcano erupting! I went to see what was going on and realized immediately what was happening. DH went up on the rooftop to look, but I walked down the street, where there was a perfect view of the eruption. I watched for a long time, went home, and then went back again later. It was truly awesome.

The second eruption dropped ash on us - it was late in the day, but it looked like a snowfall at night. Vehicles that passed in the street kicked up clouds of dust, but the sounds were deadened as in a heavy snowfall.

A year later, we were showing a visiting friend around the area; he asked if it was possible to fly over the volcano, and we said we thought there were pilots who would take people up. We were near a small airport at the time, and 10 minutes later, we were taking off for a flight over Mt. St. Helens!

Sooner or Later, you will.....

(I saw this on a crumbling old concrete wall when I was in college; it's stayed with me ever since.)

I lived on the East Hill of Kent and was pregnant with my 2 child.
But my father lived in Yakima and boy did he have a story to tell when he was a live.
He said that they went from daylight to pure darkness in a mater of minutes. And the ash was like big snowflakes but it wasn't cold.

I was looking out the picture window of a friend's house in Morton. We had been out very late drinking the night before and I was pretty hung over. I sobered up real quick.

I grew up in SE Oregon, so I wasn't all that close. BUT, not long after the first eruption, we traveled to Yakima to visit a friend of my mom on our way to Portland. I remember going for a walk and kicking the ash up on the sidewalks. I'm pretty sure my mom still has a jar of ash on top of her fridge that we took home as a souvenier. We left Portland the morning she erupted the second time.

You shall begin it well and serenely, and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old mistakes and nonsense." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Nothing nearly so dramatic. I was in the Air Force then, stationed at Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan. Mom sent me some ash that had collected on the windshield of their golf cart as they were driving home from an amateur tournament my dad had played in. I still have the bag of ash and the newspaper articles she sent to me.

I was at Girl Scout camp out on the Snake River. Those dark strange clouds rolled in with just a hint of fear showing in them. I was there with my Mom and remember her saying to me " somethings not right..."

She went to the van to listen to the radio. About then a bunch of Troop Leaders were saying no radios allowed during camping. My mom was pretty opinionated and told someone to 'get bent.'

I can remember the look on her face. I don't think I ever seen it again so far in my life. She whispered to the Troop Leader and then to us she just said.."we got to go!" We packed as quick as we could not worrying about how we packed.

I remember the drive back and my Mom telling us girls everything was going to be okay. I also remember the frantic calls from girls to their Moms, My Mom always remained calm and strong as a rock.

Once we got home she was so happy to see the rest of my family. She knew then she didn't have to be the strong one, it was my Dad's turn! We got several feet of ash and shoveled it with our snow shovels.

So where were you 30 years ago?
