My son is a pharmacist and recommended I take my Synthroid with 8 oz of water on an empty stomach and not eat for 1 hour, & wait for mimimum of 2 hours to take other meds/supplements. I think each person should take a list to their pharmacist for recommendations as to how they should take their specific medications. Just a thought - emoticon

Great news. I lost 4.4 pounds this week!

I've actually been working today. I got a major assignment submitted. I should know by Monday how I did.

I was able to pull up the info on my flashdrive and save it to my hard drive. I had to hold it at a certain angle. Awkward, but it worked. Instead of working yesterday evening, I played Bejeweled Blitz for 2 hours. I wasted so much time. I'm on it today. This is my normal coffee and SP time. In a few minutes, I'm hitting the ground running. Have a great day, everyone.

Dawn--Hopefully you'll hear something soon. I know waiting is no fun when you feel like crap.

Apjctj--I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm sure someone on here does. I hope you start to see some improvement soon.

Frustrated because I can't pull up anything on my flashdrive and all my school work is on it. I'm trying to get back into doing school work after taking a break for a few weeks. Hopefully I'll get things figured out.

very discouraged. Started on levoxy in may--saw immediate improvement-increased energy, fingernails grew!, slt weight loss.......but now it all seems to be fading again. My eye symptoms are returning (I'm hypo but have the bulging eyes), the exhaustion is setting in again and weight loss has stopped. Depressed. This has all added to my stress eating which I had under control--so the weight gain in understandable. Frustrated. New blood work on Monday but only for tsh and free t4. I was going to add the freet3 (i have the paperwork) but its not listed on their form!! does it have another name?

Had some bloodwork done about a week ago and got an unltrasound of my thyroid on Friday. Now I am just waiting to see what's up. Seems like I have been doing this forever now and still not on any meds or anything and really have no idea what is going on. UGH! Hope everyone has a great Monday! Be Blessed, Dawn

Great advice. Even when taking your meds at the same time of day on an empty stomach, it's best to keep up with blood tests. It's amazing how readings can change.

not only same time every day, but also on an empty stomach, then wait at least 30 mins before eating/drinking anything else. So I take mine when I first wake up each morning. Then have my first breakfast and coffee about 30 mins later. I already have my vitamins/calcium at lunch so that works well for me.

My doctor as well as my pharmacist let me know to take my meds the same time everyday- so i would definitely recommend that you do the same! They also let me know not to take it within 4 hours of any multi vitamin, calcium etc.. as the meds will not be as affective. I usually take mine before bed. It's a long haul, but you will get there- I was Hyperthyroid for 21/2 years- it never did regulate properly, so had Radio Active Iodine to become hypothyroid- as it is easier to control than Hyper. I gained almost 30 pounds, was very tired and depressed afterwards and my doctor played around with the quantity of my meds- I am happy to say although it's been almost a year I have lost the first 10 pounds- Thanks to Sparkpeople and all the support! Hang in there and never be afraid to call your doctor and ask questions!

Today I felt sluggish, I know its my thyroid, have to get it check. Wasn't taking my prescrip for a few days cause I left it when I went on vacations..excuse, excuses..but I did take it as soon as I came home and every since. I heard that you must take it the same time everyday, that plays a big factor in function/production too..anyone heard this?

I used to walk with my sister but she walked at a much slower pace than I was used to, but I enjoyed the time we spent together so I would just get in a real workout that morning then walk with her in the evenings after she got off work. She never was the wiser.

does anybody find that walking with their SO's isn't always "exercise". When my hubby was still alive I would try to walk with him, but quickly figured out that those walks were not fast enough pace for me. I had to decide if I wanted exercise or to be with him.

btw, have I mentioned how much better my senior dog is doing now that she is on thyroid meds?? its like night and day and I have to wonder if other people saw the same type of change in me?

Take a deep breath, and exhale slowly through your nose. I am a 20 year vet of Hashimoto's and at first until the 'inflamation' is settled, you feel like you are being 'rung backwards through a wringer. Diet has a lot to do with how you feel. What ever the doc put you on...give it time during this period. Best advise is to look at the bigger picture, relax , and be good to yourself. Avoid all food items that have dyes, additives & preservatives, and really hot spices. Buffered foods are best, don't eat cauliflower or brocolie raw. My niece is 19 and just started treatment and is doing well. Nutrition is a key with thyroid dysfunction.

How do you guys feel about diet pills? I feel like I'm cheating somehow. My endo put me on an appetite suppressant for a couple to months to jump start my weight loss. We talked about a low carb diet and exercise in conjunction with it. I've just gotten so heavy and so discouraged. Now I feel a little guilty. Just wanted your opinions about it.

Stress is a killer and this thyroid business puts a lot of stress on our bodies. I know that when my dose needs changing I struggle for a long time usually before it all gets worked out. It is interesting how our thyroids change function level up and down. We are so complex!

Becoming the healthiest me that I can be.

My appt with my endo went well. He made some adjustments and additions to my meds. I feel good about the visit. I planned to go to the gym today but ended up doing a lot of running around. I have planned my day for tomorrow and have scheduled in some exercise time. I know I feel better when I get in some movement. I hope everyone has had a great day and has a great evening.

You can do it Celia! I know you can. I haven't been going to the gym because I hurt my knee a couple of months ago on the elliptical or treadmill or both, I don't know. But I'm sure being overweight is a strain on my knees. Most of my weight is distributed but I have a lot of fat in my thighs. Also I was recently diagnosed with several tumors in my thyroid so I will be having surgery in October. It justs seems like it's one thing after another. But we have to keep on keeping on with the Lord for us who can be against us right?

Hi everyone,
I just signed up yesterday for sparkpeople, and joined this Thyroid Community last night.
I was diagnosed with Hypothyroid about 21 yrs ago after I had my first child. He said my thyroid was nearly stopped non functioning, worst he has ever seen. It has affected my first child, back then they didn't check your thyroid when you first got pregnant. Now they do,wish they did back then.
Everything was going good for awhile til lately.
My thyroid levels are low again and need to adjust my medication again. I go back for bloodtest at the end of September again. Right now I am taking 100mcg of Levothyroxine daily.

Thanks, Melinda, but right now I don't see myself making any of my goals. When I weighed in Thursday, i had gained another pound. I haven't been strict about my eating but I have been to the gym a couple of times and did cardio and strength training. I'm just feeling down about everything in my life right now. Not sure if it's my thyroid or my bipolar but I'm in a funk and I don't know how to climb out of it. I'm just tired.

I went to soo may Endo's all were useless to me. Never gave any info, most only gave synthetic and were programmed to say "natural meds are no good.... your TSH is fine your symptoms are not from your thyroid" blah blah blah. I had one tell me I needed to loss weight after telling him I was going to the gym 4 times a week for an hour to an hour and a half and a walk everyday yoga every other and I was only eating 1200 calories he called me a liar and told me I was not trying that hard it was obvious that I was lazy because my body showed it and the labs did not lie...

All were terrible I even drove 2 hour ONE way for an Endo because he was rated 4 1/2 star doctor. yea maybe for a diabetes patient he knew NOTHING about the thyroid and did not want to do the needed testing. I also tried a few ENT doctors no good either.

Best for me has been a FANTASTIC D.O. he is great very knowledgeable. Will look at and research any new findings and medications etc he is big on natural meds and runs lots of labs beyond the suggested.

I've been lucky in that I've found an endo that does get it. He's great. I have an appt next Monday. Hopefully by then I'll find out if it's me not using my C-pap for the past 2 months that has me tired or my thyroid. I started back using the machine Friday. I would definitely suggest learning as much as you can so that when you do go to someone, you'll be able to make an informed decision.

Endo's are notorious for NOT getting it ... many find that GP's, especially D.O.'s tend to be more willing to listen to the patient.

The trouble with Endo's seems to be that their ongoing education is funded and given by Pharmaceutical companies and tends to be slanted in favor of their drugs.

I'm new to all of this! Just received the results of blood work which showed an underactive thyroid. It makes a lot of sense based on the symptoms that I have been having. I have an appointment on Friday with my GP, but I have been doing some research on endo drs in my area. I found one that specializes in thyroid and metabolism. Would you recommend that I go that route instead? This is all overwhelming to me. There is SO much info out there. I would welcome any advice for someone getting started with all of this. Thanks!!

It's a good idea to have your progesterone levels checked and inquire about Armour Thyroid - it provides T4 AND T3...we need both. I was on Synthroid for awhile by itself with no success. Good luck!

"I started feeling better but lately I have felt horrible.."
that sounds very familiar. It is common when on synthetics. I used synthroid for 2 years the first couple weeks MAYBE month I felt good then terrible for 2 years. I suggest trying natural medication.

Make sure they are checking your FREE T4 and FREE T3 the free is important! The TPO means you have hashimoto. while it is not shockingly high it means your thyroid is under attack. mine was 2500 at my last labs which is low compared to the 6000 some it was before.

I suggest Dr. Datis Kharrazian's book and website here are links to them he is FANTASTIC...
drknews.com/

www.thyroidbook.com/

As you will see on his web site a huge suggestion to people with hashimoto. I and many others that have done so have had great results.

I am new to all of this so here it goes.. I am 19 years old I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in May and have been on 50mcg of synthroid. I started feeling better but lately I have felt horrible..I decided to go to a specialist and got some blood work done my levels are:
TSH: .859
T4: 1.27
T3: 2.9
TPO: 113 (0-35)
My doctor told my that i have Hashimoto's Hypothyroiditis. I am just really discouraged right now and feel like I will never feel normal again..I am a college student about to start class so I am very worried. Any tips, stories, or encouragement would be greatly appreciated!

CELIA1975,

Your TSH could be a tiny bit lower. What were the ranges for the T4 & T3? Also was that Free T4 & T3, or Reverse T4 & T3?

It looks like your T3 might be low, but it's difficult to tell without the ranges. (Different labs use different methods and have different normal ranges.)

Are you getting enough selenium? Do you, or have you ever have any kidney or liver problems?

You may want to talk with your Dr about adding T3.

The sugar problem resolves once you get past the first few days. Of course it comes back now and then because like any other addiction you have to deal with it one day at a time. I find that if I eat only fruit for treats that I forget about cookies after a while. I am always shocked that cravings disappear when I cut out sweets and white flour and white rice. When I have sugar I can't stop either. Good luck I started on May 1st and lost 20 pounds but have reached a plateau now. More exercise is in order I guess. Good luck! emoticon

2beefit, I'll be praying that your fine needle biopsy test comes back normal.
Yes, I sometimes felt that I had a frog in my throat and a lump that I was constantly trying to swallow. Since the surgery, the lump has gone away. Because of the swelling I'm still kind of forcing my voice but I'm hopeful that it will go away before I go back to work next week.
Keep us informed on your test results. We're all rooting for good results!

Get your doctor to check your Iron and ferritin, I know many people start to get what they think are thyroid symptoms like feeling tired, then find their iron and or ferritin is low, I know it happened to me as well, ferritin should be above 70 for thyroid patients and most times its not. It can make you feel really tired and fatigued. Also have them check vit C and Vit D those to can have an effect on you low Vit c will make it hard for your body to use iron. Low vit D gives many symptoms much like hypo symptoms.

What were the normal ranges for those tests? FT3 at 1.0 is probably low meaning that you are hypo thyroid ... your FT4 may be too high which would be problematic as well ... FT4 converts to T3 and Reverse T3, which while inert can cause you to be more hypo because Reverse T3 will attach to the T3 cell receptors and BLOCK the active T3 from reaching your cells, thus rendering you extremely hypothyroid.

Most people on thyroid medication FEEL their best with FT3 near the high end of the range. You are a patient and you need to be treated for how you FEEL ... you are not a lab value that needs to be within a range.

I don't think that blood tests always tell the whole story. those are averages and not everybody is the same.

but it could be your cpap. my son has a bipap and I can sure tell when he hasn't used it.
