I am grateful for my family. My husband and I are going to visit my recently married daughter in her new house (rented) in a new city (League City, near Houston) Thur - Sat. After really difficult teen years (she is ADHD and really wore me out at times) I am grateful to enjoy her company as an adult.

Hello to all! I am catching up on reading some old posts. Thanks to all who spoke about keeping a gratitude journal. I saw one on Amazon and will probably get it.

I was out of state for awhile and then have been settling in again @ home. I hope to be on this thread frequently as I get into SparkPeople again.

I am grateful for random acts of kindness. They always remind me to rethink my place on earth yet challenge me to turn an intention into action. An extra quarter left in a machine, a smile, a door held, and some home baking for work colleagues. Simple, creative, and anonymous- to help others through their day/maybe even change a life.

Those of you who live in areas suffering with large snowfalls and bitter temps have my sympathy, BUT I am grateful for the "cold" weather we are having in south Louisiana (I live southwest of New Orleans.) Our area is having temps in the teens and twenties. This is a refreshing change for this yankee.

Today I am grateful for a couple of things. First that the school system saw fit to close schools for the inpending weather. Second that I am not in Fullton NY. It has been snowing for 9 days straight. Over 55"! I am not by any means wishing harm or anything of that nature on those people who are there, all I'm saying is I would have lost my job and starved to death. I don't do snow very well at all.

I'm grateful for all of you guys that took the time to come to this message board. At times we find ourselves seeking guidance and help through our depression. But other times we come here to be that support for others.

Thanks everyone!

1.)Talking to my Niece on the phone
2.)Having a job
3.)Friend and Family
4.)Laughter

Remember if you make a journal don't make it a chore. Just keep it some where that you might write things in once in a while. :)

I am grateful to be alive, as something horrible happened New Year's Eve/New Year's Day to me. I don't want to get into the details here, but let's just say I never want to go through it again and am just happy to be alive and see my son every day he wakes up.

And they don't have to be unique things each time, either - they can be things that you've been grateful for before.

A friend of mine keeps a gratitude journal and the top of his list each time is "grateful to wake up alive"!!

TERIVONN,

Maybe this thread will give you a reason to step out a bit more. How about taking a ride when you drop your son at his destination? You're bound to see something that catches you interest, makes you smile. Go to a local park, watch the squirrels doing their funny things and the birds hopping around in search of food. Browse the most expensive stores in your area and find thing that make your heart yodel without breaking it.

You decide what appeals to you. Being out there in the world gives you opportunities to enjoy exchanges with people as you go along and this alone can give you a great lift.

I guess that's another part that plays in my depression... I don't go anywhere to see anything "riveting". I go to work and go home. Stay home till the next day, unless I'm transporting my son somewhere. My life hu?

Beside writing up events, encounters and observations of the day or week, include experiences from the past that have stayed with you. For example:

Attending a performance that was so riveting, so brilliant, that you were transported, unaware that you'd been sitting in a theater;

An night-time stroll from Old Town Square to the river Vltava, and the gasp from surprise at the dramatic view of Prague Castle across the river;

Every view of the Grand Teton Range from the east.

The enduring times from the past have powerful significance.

I've been told that one of my problems is I don't like to see the good things. I've always explained it as, "when something good happens, something bad is right around the corner." Which has been true, at least for the past year. I may try this journalling thing, but baby steps is what it is going to take.

Thanks for the info, it seems sometimes when you feel like crap someone comes along and reminds you to think of what I am grateful for and it sure helps to say thanks for being my husband or thankful for the wonderful kids, friends and family so I say thank you for reminding me how truly blessed I am.. emoticon

I am go grateful and happy today because my family got together yesterday and help move furniture so that I can have a room that is all mine. Has my treadmill, music, etc. It is a first and I am past 70 years old. Now to use it and get fit.

God grant me the serenity to accept things I cannot change, the courage to change things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.

Just as a reminder to everyone. You don't have to write in your journal everyday. I do it just a few times a week. I don't do well with feeling pressured to do things. So I do it when I feel like it. And it works for me :)

How to Keep a Gratitude Journal

Contributor
By eHow Contributing Writer
Article Rating: (18 Ratings)

A gratitude journal is a way to consciously call attention to the things for which we are thankful each day. By focusing on gratitude, we become aware of those things and thus create a shift in our thinking to the positive. The following suggestions can help start a gratitude journal and a whole new outlook on life.

Instructions

Step
1

Choose a blank notebook or journal to write in every night. Consider a spiral-bound journal that opens flat for ease in writing. Select lined or unlined paper. Keep this notebook next to the bed with a pen readily available.
Step
2

Look for things during the day for which you are grateful. Make mental notes throughout the day. Notice how the gratitude journal shifts the focus to a more positive outlook.
Step
3

Write five thing you're grateful for each night before bedtime. Review the day and include anything, however small or great, that was a source of gratitude that day, e.g., a baby's smile, a flower in bloom, or the smell of a newly cut lawn. Make the list personal. Write a few words about the five benefits or blessings. Be brief and increase the length as time progresses.
Step
4

Begin looking everyday for the positive angle in all things. View obstacles as opportunities to appreciate.
Step
5

Focus on the wonderful things in life to attract similar encounters in the course of the day. Use positive energy as a magnet to draw even more positive energy. Note these attractions in the gratitude journal.
Step
6

Personalize the gratitude journal. Expand it with clippings, photos, quotes or verses from magazines or other sources.

Sorry to hear you've been suffering from depression for so long. Doing a gratitude journal could be a step in the right direction, but you'll have to take baby steps. Think of something that brings you joy--it may be something as simple as the fragrance of a flower or the laughter of a child. Think about things of beauty, family or friends. Maybe even a beloved pet. The beauty of nature. When you come up with something that makes you smile, write it down. The more you try, the easier it will be. Even the smallest things count. Good luck and God bless!

It's easy to start a gratitude journal. Just keep a diary or book where you can write down all the things that happened that day that you are grateful for. I try and aim for five per day.

And they don't have to be major, life-changing things (although they can be!). They can be as simple as having 10 minutes to yourself to read the paper, or a hug from your child, or seeing a news story about someone losing their home and being grateful that you still have yours, or the ability to smell the freshly mown grass in spring. You get the idea.

Whenever you feel down, just have a look back through the journal and you'll find that it really helps.

This is a very good idea for me to do! And the very first thing I am grateful for is this reminder that I am blessed with so much! Thank you!

good morning. I also have started a journal but have not been good at keeping it up to date. I have so much to be thankful for but can't see the forest for the trees as they say because i focus so much on my mother and her dementia. Also i am in charge of her affairs and it drives me into depression and stress. Also had to sell her house so all her things are in my house and garage and I really can't see the floors for the mess. Got rid of a lot but still have too much. Have to do a face peel shortly because i have so many pre- cancerous spots from the sun, already had surgery for skin cancer. It depresses me. I forget to be thankful that I am cancer free, so far. It is all a matter of remembering to focus on the good things in life but hard to do if i let the negative take over. So here is to a new and happy healthy new year to all. emoticon

Great Idea!! My mom who also suffers from depression and anxiety tells me I am one of the most positive people she knows. But I often disagree with her.

So writing down what I am grateful for would be good for me that way on days I can't seem to find a reason to smile I can look back and be reminded.

Very strange for me to see this today - I have a written plan called a WRAP that helps me stay on track. Keeping a gratitude journal is part of my daily routine to stay focused and well. I have not been keeping my journal lately and struggling to begin again. Seeing this post generated the encouragement I needed to open the journal and pick up from where I left off. Are you ready for this, I even teach keeping a gratitude journal to others with a diagnosis - shame on me for not keeping up with mine.

Thank you for reminding me how important it is to be grateful for what we have.

I have a gratitude list I started 10 years ago, when I quit drinking and using, I wrote it on a roll of cash register tape paper, the price I will have to pay if I ever drink. I have a lot to be grateful for today that price is just too high.

NAMASTE --The divine in me honors and respects the divine in you.

Just for today I will do my best to do what is Good, kind, right, and nice, even when it is difficult.

This is the kind of idea that I've always pooh-poohed as being pointless and Pollyanna-ish. Just now, however, it seems as though it may not be such a bad thing.

I read about gratitude journals about 6 or 7 years ago and have been keeping one on and off ever since. I find it to be a truly valuable tool in helping me to deal with my depression and stress in my life by looking at what is good in my life that I have to be thankful for

I was given a couple of diaries for Christmas and I've decided to turn one into a gratitude diary. Every day before I go to bed I want to be able to write at least 5 things in there that I received and that happened on that day that I am grateful for. So when I'm having a really bad day, I can look back on previous days and hopefully this will help keep things in perspective.

I just wanted to share this with everyone. I bought a Gratitude Journal about a month ago. I write in it when I remember and it's a no pressure journal. I really enjoy it and want to share it with you. Some entries you just write what you want others they give instructions or idea's on what to focus on. It's pretty much a journal to remind yourself for all the things you can be grateful for. We are all are truly blessed but sometimes our depression really masks it for us. Hope all is well.
