Thanks for all the suggestions! I substituted my ab workout temporarily for taebo and that seems to work okay, also the reverse crunches are great! I'd never heard of a reverse crunch before but I looked it up and they're so much better! Thanks again!

I have the same problem with my neck, but I found that reverse crunches and the leg lifts work the best for me. I am able to do crunches now, but I lace my fingers behind my head for support and focus on the muscles I'm using in my stomach and it seems to help.

I guess I have a different problem. I have a ample supply of a top. In 30 day shred it has me do jump rope and jumping jacks. I don't mind doing the work but jumping hurts. There is no modification for it. Any have any suggestions?

I have back issues, and can do crunches, but not without pain. I recently found a standing abs workout, and that was a lot easier on my back. I can't do regular pushups, so my hubby suggested doing standing ones against the wall to build up my upper body strength, and it's working.!

I also found that taebo does wonders for working my abs, and mostly the moves are standing up.

I've found i have the same problems with Jillian Michaels tapes, but she usually gives you "cheat" ways to make it easier. I wish i could describe them to you, but i'm sure i would just confuse you ;)

i have a different sort of problem (motion sickness) so i cant do most ab work.
if you have exercise tv, there is a standing ab workout that is awesome.
and i know that some of the walking away the pounds features movements to tone ab muscle while getting in the cardio.

Maybe try pilates? Those focus on the core while working other muscle groups. There's a 12-minute pilates abs video on SP. I'd link it for you, but I'm about to run out the door.

An exercise ball is also great for crunches. It takes the pressure off your neck/spine but still works your abs. You can also do "crunchless ab work" like Scissors (lie on your back, hands under hips, legs perpendicular to the floor. Drop one leg straight down parallel to the floor but not touching it, bring back up. Switch legs.). Hope this helps!

What tapes were you doing? I know with the Turbo Jam and Hip Hop Abs you have to do the intro dvd to see how to properly do the moves so you will work out your abs and not just arms and legs.

Crunches are good but if you are not doing them properly you will hurt your neck. If you are having neck pain you are not keeping your head straight. One aerobics instructor suggested making a fist and putting it under your chin so you can't bend your head.

Maybe check out the ab exercises here on SP for suggestions as well.

Hope this helps!

As part of my workout today I decided to include some ab work. It didn't go very well. Out of the four DVD workouts I attempted, I found that more than half the exercises required me to use my arms and legs to lift my weight into some convoluted motion that was supposed to work my abs. The thing is, my arms and legs are toned and I've got a pretty hefty weight. I just can't do it. Not to mention regular crunches type stuff kills my neck and back. So I'm wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem? Should I just forgoe the ab work until my arms and legs tone up and I loose a bit more weight? Or is it just me?
