Calcium. Don’t drink sodas together with calcium-rich foods or supplements. If your soft drink contains phosphoric acid (and most do), it will block absorption of calcium into the blood stream.

...received this in an email...I don't drink sodas but sure don't want to lose any calcium as I have a hard time getting enough as it is!

If you're asking yourself what your diet has to do with COPD, the answer is plenty! A few adjustments to your eating habits may actually help you breathe and feel better. Here are some suggestions:

Watch the salt because eating too much of it may cause you to retain excess water, making breathing more difficult.
If you get short of breath while eating or just after, consider five or six small meals a day instead of three large ones.
If you get short of breath while eating or just after, eat while sitting up to lessen pressure on your lungs.
Avoid foods that can cause gas and a bloated abdomen—two things that can make breathing uncomfortable. Carbonated beverages, broccoli, brussels sprouts, and cabbage may be on that list.
If you get short of breath while eating or just after, don't rush—eat and chew slowly.

As summer winds to an end, fall is a time for harvest. September is many things to many people, including 5-a-Day month. Fruit and Vegetable month, and even Organic Harvest month! Since most people struggle to get the recommended five to nine servings of produce each day, these 30 tips will help you add more fruits and vegetables to your diet - and enjoy every bite!

September 1, 2012:

Dip it. Instead of dipping your chips and veggies into creamy dressings, make a healthy dip out of veggies - - hummus, chunky salsa, guacamole, and roasted red pepper dips will help you meet your daily quota.

I did have a camera but the film broke in the camera so I am waiting for DD to post hers and I will copy them. They had a photo line that we could get up to the stage and take pics so we had some good ones. I had one of GS angled with Mike Ely together (From the Ely Young band. Makes me mad that the film broke. DH said the film must have been old and brittle.

I have to agree. There are some weekends I do so good and others I wish I could redo! LOL Like yesterday! There was a concert sponsered by a local readio station to celebrate thier birthday ( they do this every year) and it just happened to be yesterday. They bring in about 5 country performers and give away the tickets. Free concert! You know I am going!

The food they had there was junk and a bit on the high side. Soda or water was $2 a bottle! (Beer was $7)Chips ( little vending size ) $1, hot dog $2 , brats $3 and so on. NO healthy foods at all! And you could not bring in coolers. So I ended up with an Elephant ear (it has been at least 2 years since I had one and it was so good!) and a couple of bottles of soda. I got to the concert at 10:30am and did not leave until after 7pm. I sure did not want to get all my water in there! Joy johns and about 40,000 people do not mix! I did not want to have to use the bathroom at all! So I drank real slow and not much! Came home and made up for the water as I could not drink enough! And had an Italin beef sandwick with peppers. So my calories came in around 1,000 but not good nutrition!

But the concert was great!!!!

Do you commit to healthy habits on weekends?

1. Yes

2. No

3. Not always

4. Other

Well...I wanted so bad to say Yes...but will have to go with "Not Always". It's usually like every day of the week. I start out strong and end up giving into cravings about 2 hours before bedtime and the physical activity is usually limited to cleaning house and running errands. What about you?

Bring on a better banana split. Split a banana, add three "scoops" of watermelon and top with strawberries, chopped nuts and a drizzle of vanilla yogurt. Don't forget the cherry on top.

This is pretty good. I wasn't sure about the strawberries on top of the watermelon but the yogurt added the right amount of flavor! Give it a try while watermelon is plentiful!

I am suffering right along with you Bonnie! I know Linda is too! Our heat index is forecasted like yours. Tomorrow the 105 mark. Any member of SP who says they can't drink at least 8 cups of water needs to move to the midwest and I will bet they will have no problem at all!

I have a/c in the car and at work but no central at home only a couple of small window units, one in the kitchen and one in the bedroom. The rest of the rooms are hot as hades! The computer happens to be in one of the non a/c rooms so that is why I am not on as much. Mainly in the early mornings and later in the evening.

I have to go out and water again tonight and you can be assured I will be wet. The sprinkler will "mal-function" LOL

Beside that the tip today for all of us in the midwest is to stay in front of a fan or A/C and drink plenty of water.

Linda, I seen on the nes you all eached 104F for a heat index! We did not get up that high only 102F. Now they are saying a chance of thunder storms over night. I would rather have them during the day.

You are lucky! We have one lady that brings food frequently and insist that everyone eats it. It is homemade and ususally has veggies in it...so not to bad. She doesn't bring cookies or cakes except when it is someone's birthday!

Craving something creamy? Go for Greek style yogurt. Even the fat-free varieties are thick, rich and creamy with a bit of tang for extra flavor. Use it to top tacos, mix it into smoothies, or lightly sweeten and put a dollop on fruit.

There was a recent article on Spark about a certain brand of Greek style yogurt...think it Chobain, they had different varieties. I picked up some pineapple at the store and it was really good....but a special treat....as it was expensive. $1.59 per 8 oz container, where I usually pay 50 cents for the store brand.

Distance yourself. When you're feeling the pull of smething verboten, move away. Don't sit next to the buffet table, find someting to do with your hands at cocktail parties and don't let co-workers leave doughnuts near your desk.

As always a gret tip!

I wish it was as easy as just getting rid of the foods that tempt me but since DH has been told to eat different foods to get some of his levels up it's been junk food heaven in our house! The only thing he eats/ drinks that does not tempt me is Coke. I got away from sugared sodas long ago and if I even take a sip it about gags me as it is way to sweet.

Out of sight, out of mind! If something temps you, get rid of it or avoid it. That might mean ridding the pantry of junk food, changing the channel to avoid fast food ads or taking an alternate route so you don't walk past the bakery.

Use the Sparkpeople Nutrition Tracker between June 8-17th for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to the Spark Store:

Tip: Track your calories. Knowing that you have to log that candy bar, extra large fries or second can of soda means you'll think twice before chowing down. Look up calorie counts of junk foods to help discourage cravings.
