Just saw the documentary "Fat Sick and Nearly Dead" which featured Dr. Fuhrman! Awesome show. Inspired me to go out and buy a juicer and make the mean green drink! emoticon

This lecture by Dr. Micheal Klaper was an eye opener as to why we we should all be eating plant based diets. It is called A Diet For All Reasons and on you tube you can watch is in parts and it is labeled FOOD THAT KILLS. It teaches with eveidence as to what animal products do to our blood and body parts as it enters and is absorbed through out the body. This informative video as well as the ETL book is what kicked me in the pants enough to make big necessary changes so suddenly. So check it out and go to you tube and type in food that kills to watch it.

Did you ask your husband's doctor to refer you to a nutritionist? With prediabetes I think that would be a possiblity. It's driving me nuts. My husband's Dr. wants him to see a nutritionist. I want him to go to one and I would go with him but he says he takes his pill he doesn't need to watch what he eats. (He has type 2 diabetes)

Needless to say, I'm not handling this very well. I have changed his diet somewhat. I am serving large salads every night. He still gets his meat but I've cut portions by more than half.

He's lost 14 pounds so he is making progress even though he doesn't know he is on a diet.

My hubby has 2 doctors. His GP is the drug pusher. His cardiologist is a vegan and has told him that he should be on AT LEAST a low fat vegetarian diet, preferably vegan. Like many people he thinks he "can't" do that. He says he can't eat the way I do.

He still goes to that doctor. I went with him this week because of his hearing impairment since it is hard for him to follow what is said. I gathered that he has gained 6 pounds which he needs to lose. No mention the other 40 pounds he already needed to lose. (The doctor, who lost well over a hundred pounds a few years ago, has clearly gained back most of his weight.) The "numbers are all good" except the weight and the continuing pre-diabetes: "You need to watch those carbs" was the only assistance given on that topic as usual. It makes me want to scream.
I love my veggie-eating anti-medication doctor.

Wow. People are always striving to have good lab numbers. Only to find out "Intensive Therapy Means You Will Die Sooner with Good Looking Numbers."

What scares me is that my husband is one of those people who takes drugs to have good numbers. This article mentions one that he is on.

Note to self: Make one more attempt to get through to husband.

It is so true. I got caught someplace once (this has been some time ago) that the only thing on the menu that was even reasonable was a grilled cheese sandwich, so I decided this one time wasn't going to hurt me. I was SO SICK. My stomach and intestines hurt for 2 days. NEVER again. I have a Larabar in my purse I can eat, but you won't catch me eating cheese ever again. It took me a week to get that "clean" feeling back again. This was before I read The China Study and understood the whole dairy issue. Dairy is evil!

I have ordered three books. Dr. Esselstyn's book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease. I read a review and I gather he explains the science behind the diet, Unprocessed by Chef AJ, and Julieanna Hever's The Complete Idiot's Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition. Hope they get here soon.

Before my diabetes diagnosis I had no clue what blood sugar was all about so I have no idea what history I might have had with it.
The idea of being unconscious really terrifies me. I tested more often for a while after I decided to do what he told me to do and it has only gone below 68 once in those tests so I've lucked out there.
I just really needed to know whether it was habit or need driving me to snack and it turns out that for me it was habit and unfounded fear.

Throughout my lifetime I have had trouble with unstable blood sugar between breakfast and lunch and feel really faint if I don't have a mid-morning snack, particularly if I am exercising, or if lunch is delayed. This morning I had a healthy smoothie at 6:30 a.m., was walking in our neighborhood at a leisurely pace at 8:30, and felt so light-headed and faint that I ate a TLC bar because I couldn't afford to risk passing out in the street.

I don't want to not be able to exercise because I'm worried about hitting my head on the street.

I think that everyone's body has its own tendencies, and my unstable blood sugar between breakfast and lunch is just one of those things.

I remember reading in Fuhrman that he was scoffing about people claiming low blood sugar because, in his words, their blood sugar did not dip below 50. Well, I can't imagine not feeling weak and faint with a blood sugar of 50. My fasting blood sugar is 84, so 50 is way below that. I think he has probably never experienced a blood sugar that low.

However, I did find your answer informative. I just think that I can't take that chance in certain situations (like walking by myself in the morning in the neighborhood). Also, I find that even if I'm not exercising, if lunch is delayed too long and I don't have an appropriate snack around, by the time I get to lunch, I'm ravenous and almost feel blind with hunger. Then I eat more than I should, even if it is the good stuff.

So those are issues I have had to deal with.

Normally, yes. If it has to be six hours or more between meals I will eat some fruit and/or nuts. On days when I do not clean houses and do not otherwise get physically very active I occasionally will eat two meals.

After the diabetes diagnosis I used to think that I was feeling woozy and that my blood sugar was dropping too low and I would snack more frequently. I had once gotten down to the forties when hiking and nearly passed out before realizing it (still in the medication days then) and I think that frightened me into being overly cautious.
Dr. Fuhrman and company shot this idea down though, pointing out that there was no way it was really getting too low and that even going to bed with a reading in the seventies would not drop it too low overnight. So I gritted my teeth and gave it a chance and have had to admit that I seldom need to snack. I don't check it that often any more but I don't think it is ever below the mid nineties when I go to bed, by the way, since I eat my last meal only a couple of hours before bedtime.

I highly recommend reading The Spectrum, by Dean Ornish. It is like hearing from another doctor with goals and methods very similar to Fuhrman's, but which addresses information I have not read in Fuhrman to date.

I learned about chronic inflammation (a relatively new topic), why tea is so much better for you than coffee (and the difference between green, oolong, and black), more about blood pressure, and lots more I can't even remember.

If you liked reading Fuhrman and like reading about health initiatives from a doctor's perspective, you'd find The Spectrum interesting.

Yeah, I get carried away when I play in the kitchen and I sort of lose my balance of food types.

Me too. I also need to make my dinner meal simple (plain) instead of trying to make a fancy plate. When I make a fancy plate, I tend to have more starch, etc.

I'd say that is an update. Nutrition information, framework for looking at food choices (the Spectrum), and recipes. Lots in there!

The most effective health-care is self-care.

Nutrition is the prescription.

You can literally stretch your lifespan by shrinking your waistline.

Nutrition and other lifestyle factors that you can choose are a more significant determinant of your health than genetics.

Filling your stomach with high-nutrient foods is like by-pass surgery without the surgery.

We are all born with an innate desire to not only survive but thrive.

I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is 'Abortion', because it is a war against the child... A direct killing of the innocent child, 'Murder' by the mother herself... And if we can accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love... And we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts...
