I lost a total of 8 pounds. My weight was like a go-to during the challenge, but I'm happy with the miss since I haven't been able to exercise much due to my pinched nerve. I hope everyone has a great week!

Yay, I ended the challenge with a loss.

BOO, I lost .2 pounds

This summer has not been a resounding success for me, more like a bit of a flop.

I have spent my time either recuperating from a hectic school year or grieving. All I really have to show for my time off is a sense of peace and connection to my family. I enjoyed my visits and they helped me to grieve. I have even come up with a few ideas for a more successful year starting in two weeks. Where'd the time go? New month and refreshed focus coming soon.

I did my weigh in this morning, got a busy weekend and wanted to make sure I got it done,

I lost 2 lbs this challenge, not what it should have been, but its better than gaining and I'm still able to walk and stand on my two feet a little bit at a time, and do my chair exercises. So here we go to the next one.

Babs: Just wanted again to emoticon emoticon emoticon for coming up with these challenges. I take them very seriously and most of the time do my best at accomplishing some NSV's and loosing some weight. So I need to work a little harder at staying on track. (You Think) emoticon emoticon

Got to Go for now. CJ from OK. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Hard to believe this challenge is drawing to a close!

Thank you to each one of you for your participation. The chatting has been wonderful.

I definitely didn't do so well, but it certainly could be worse and it has been worse. So I'll look at the bright side - hurrah for me/us! We did it. That's what matters.

New challenge will be coming.

I'm back! I was away for four days and came home only to have my phone, internet and electricity out. Electricity only out one day. Phone and internet were out four days. That's the good news as this morning they told my darling son that it would be out until August seventh. I was going crazy not having my SP.

I have not done well on this challenge as I have been swinging between depression and grief and then off schedule and visiting family and generally out of routines.

I am feeling much better after the family visits and connections. Since school ended, I had a visit with one of my nephews from Texas and his wife. Then I went to Michigan and saw my aunt, my sister, a cousin, my other nephew from Texas and his special lady friend and her daughter, my nephew from Michigan and his wife and two children. Then went to New Jersey and visited my 93 year old aunt, my three cousins, my cousin's daughter, and my son's great aunt on his father's side. I came back home and went to a birthday party for a two year old great great niece and got to hug and love on her, her twin brother and sister who are a couple months old, and my great niece and her husband. But, the icing on the cake was that my other great niece and her husband had come up from North Carolina with their two girls 3 1/2 and 1 1/2 years old and brought their niece who is 7 that I haven't seen since she was a year old at my father's funeral. Her mom couldn't come because there wasn't room in the car. It was the first time all six great greats were together. They are my deceased sister's great grandchildren. I felt truly blessed to have them all together.

Needless to say, eating and exercise were not very high on my priority list. I haven't weighed yet but expect it won't be pretty. I'm okay with that though because being surrounded by my family helped me process my grief and lifted some of the dark clouds off my heart. I have rested, renewed my strength and think I will be ready when school starts back up in about three weeks. I didn't accomplish any of my goals with regard to organization or preparing for next year but rather I simply took care of me and my grief. I needed that and the rest will have to take care of itself in its own time.

There was a bittersweet quality to all of my family time. Both my aunt's are in poor health. The kids were amazing but they reminded me that my sister can no longer be with us. I am especially glad to be able to visit with my aunts as I don't know how much longer I will have them.

Lin, so sorry you have shingles. Painful stuff. I haven't had them, but my mom did and she was so darn miserable. Be well dear friend.

CJ, glad you got yourself focused again. It certainly happens to all of us. I often tell myself that if I only had to prepare meals for myself I wouldn't have any problems. Then the real Babs comes through and says - oh, yes you would!! You'd be fast fooding to avoid cooking and clean-up. emoticon So true. So I'm proud of you!! Keep up the good work.

Glad you're back from some of your travels, Nancy. You'll be getting ready for school before you know it too. I think you went a lot longer than they did here. My GD starts 8/15. Time to register her today. Summer flies by.

I lost 0.4 this week. I'm happy with that.

I am so sorry you are under the weather. Shingles stinks and I made sure to get the vaccine a couple of years ago. I have worked with people who had it and my aunt had it before they had treatments to combat it. I have been really tired this week and sure hope my appointment on Monday will give me some answers.

I guess I'm just worn out. We leave Tuesday for a visit with family in New Jersey and before long we'll be back to school. I have doctor's appointment and eye doctor's appointment so keeping busy.

best laid plans............
last week I started with 3 days straight of an hour at the gym either on the treadmill or the bike. Then I had to work selling pickles at bingo for the Elks lodge. Thursday I could not move. I could eat, and eat I did, a bunch. I was so down physically and mentally, I couldn't figure out what the hay was happening.
I woke up this past Monday with a welt on the right side of my face in front of my ear about 1" X 2" long. ??? No clue where it came from. I wear a CPAP mask at night that crosses the welt, but it wouldn't have caused it.
So I kept watching to see if it would go away. no such luck. Wednesday I tried to call a dermatologist, they were booked until Sept! Then I called my GP and got an appt for Thursday. The med assistant looked at it and didn't even hesitate when she told me I have shingles. Really? I got the vaccination last year. She told me some folks still get the virus, but catching it this early it should be a mild case. So I picked up the rx and started taking the pills Thursday afternoon.
Now I know why I felt like crap the week before and ate so much, it wasn't the exercise, it was my body trying to fight the shingles. emoticon
I will be on the pills for a week, 3X a day. From info online and talking to the pharmacist, it was suggested to take gabapentin in addition to the med to ease the itching and it has worked wonders. Friday I felt tingling in 4 more spots and they expanded. Today when I got up and looked in the mirror, they are still there but appear to be coming to a head and no more spots have broken out. I really haven't had the pain (thank goodness) and so far it is just a mild case.
I probably took about 12 grams of Vit C yesterday, along with my B100 and just as many probiotics, also 100 mg of gabapentin with each dose of medicine(Valtrex). Which I will do again today. I'm just laying low and staying away from people this weekend, hoping that by next Wednesday my face will be clear.
Long story I know, but if you had chickenpox when you were younger, you have a 1 in 3 chance of getting shingles. Please get vaccinated! It may not prevent the disease, but it will help minimize the symptoms. And if you notice any strange markings on your body, do not ignore them. the quicker a doctor exams them, the quicker you can be healed! emoticon

I'm back home and we'll be going on another trip next week. Hell was great and both that and the planetarium show were highlights of the trip for Ed. We have great memories of camping in Hell when he was young. My favorite memory inducing part of the trip was the visit to the lake where we used to go so many years ago. I could see my boys and nephews splashing and playing in the water when they were little. Next week we'll visit my 93 year old aunt and my cousins in New Jersey. That will just about finish July and summer will be disappearing quickly. Last week of July is the county fair and Ed works the whole week. Then, I'll have the memorial service for my friend's son, a visit from the bishop at church the same weekend.

I so love the chatter going on here. It's motivating.

I think everyone is doing well. Summer can be difficult due to vacations/travels. Makes it hard to control what goes in your mouth! Of course, I have problems with that when I'm home too. My problem has been soda this past week. I'm back on water.

I am glad to see that the team bonus points are back - I missed that feature.

Becky - so sorry to hear about your flood and mold. I hope that everything gets fixed up quickly. You have seemed to keep a positive attitude about it, although I don't think I would have been so positive. But anything that gets us organizing and straightening up our living areas has to be a good thing. emoticon

So nice to see all the posts. I've missed you all.

Kathy.... I was just thinking of you and your mom before I signed on tonight. It's so hard to be in a constant state of sorrow and grieving. When I was 32, and my daughter not yet a year old, my mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor. I was her full time caregiver for the two years before she passed, and it was such a weird thing to observe my baby growing more and more capable as my mom simultaneously grew more and more incapable. She lost her vision in the last 6 months, and I was always so acutely aware of how nightmarish it must be to wake up from sleeping and not know if it was day or night, or even where or who you were. Trying to stay happy on the outside for both my daughter's sake and my mom's sake when I felt so defeated and devastated was just completely and totally exhausting. So my heart goes out to you, full force.

It's always so surprising to me to hear women my age talking about their moms, but it seems so common nowadays for people to live into their 90s and beyond.

Anyway... hugs, hugs, and more hugs, and I totally understand about just wanting someone else to do the cooking, or the need to get out.

I haven't been eating well, either, nor tracking, nor weighing. Sigh. Frankly, food has always been my escape and my happy place... and I sometimes go over to Denny's and spend way too much money on a meal just for the pleasure of being waited on.

Work is still insanely busy. We got several new accounts from other transcription companies who were hit by ransomware last week or whenever that was. I like having a job and having enough work, but it's kind of demoralizing to never be able to get on top of it and to feel like you don't know what you're doing. We work on almost 100 hospital accounts, and each one has different demanding rules. Makes a person's brain feel like exploding.

Then yesterday I discovered that water was leaking into my kitchen at the floorboards, and that my closet (packed full of boxes of too-small clothes) had walls covered in black mold, presumably from the same leak. The leak was fixed today, and drywall will be replaced tomorrow, but in the meantime I have to pull everything out of the closet. I suppose that on the bright side, though, it's making me do some much-needed reorganization and clearing out.

So that is MY vent and whine for the night, but seems minor compared to yours, Kath.

Kudos to all who've been staying the course and actually losing weight. I wish somebody would learn to bottle discipline and consistency. I'd buy some for sure.

Love you all!

Arrived safely at our destination around ten this morning. We made a trip soon afterwards to museum of natural history and went to the planetarium show. My aunt looks good but her health is deteriorating - and at nearly ninety, it's not surprising. Was wonderful to just be with family. Was fun to enjoy the museum with the three kids, ages 13, 8 and 10. My great nephew is thirteen and great niece is eight. My nephew's special friend's daughter is ten. Each has their own quirks and yet they acted like they'd known each other forever. My cousin was here also and he's a special favorite with me. My sister and her husband hosted us for dinner tonight and it was pizzas, salad, berries cherries, watermelon, pineapple, and ice cream sundaes. Tried a chicken barbecue pizza and it was yummy.

Tomorrow we are going to the beach and then going to HeII, (YES, there really is such a place) Michigan. Expecting a terrific time and must make sure to bring my Sun block.

Everyone have a grand day tomorrow.

I am determined to stay current with the happening in my teams. Connecting is important and I need to make time for reading what is going on.

Kathy - my heart goes out to you. I am caregiver for my 97 year old mother and although her mind is still good, it is still a struggle some days. You are handling so much but as Jeanne says, this time of caring for her will be some of the memories you will treasure over the years to come. Hugs to you.

Nancy - thanks for sharing your summer meal ideas. They sound so simple that even I should be able to manage to pull a meal together. It's not that I don't like to cook, I just get tired of it day after day. And there is only the two of us (my Mom and I) - one would think coming up with ideas would be easy.

I did have a little better sleep last night - except for being eaten by a dragon and then shot out of an elevator. Where do these dreams come from?!! I am hoping that tonight is a good night for emoticon too as I plan to get up and head off to the pool. And then I will come home and continue to work in my garden/yard.

I hope everyone enjoyed this July 4th, whether or not you are American. Every day we wake up alive is cause for celebration.

Kathy - If your mother enjoyed music, sang in choir or played an instrument, one thing you might try that will bring a moment or two of pleasure to her is to play music from when she was younger. I have, seen people who don't remember family suddenly start so singing along with the music. I have seen them sit at a piano and play complicated piece but be unable to put a spoon of food into their mouth. It is just a thought. Nursing homes often get musicians to come and play for their residents. When my stepmother was dying, when her son and his wife played guitar and we'd sing gospel music and even in her sleep she'd begin mouthing the words. This suddenly popped into my head as I was reading over the posts. It isn't going to bring back her memory but it might give her some peace or pleasure.

Irene, we forget the salads and switch around but those salads have tempted even ME and I don't even like salad as a rule. That's why I mentioned some of the crazy additions. I forgot to mention that nuts and seeds are favorites for mine and we also have recently discovered that sweet potatoes cut or shredded add a nice touch.

I haven't lost anything in the past couple of weeks but continue to plug along putting one foot in front of the other. I'm going to bed for a nap because we're leaving around midnight tonight. Everything is packed and Ed is already napping. We'll get in around midmorning tomorrow.

Kathy, you're not whining. It's a real issue for you (and many others, I'm afraid). In a very real sense of the word, you are truly grieving for the mother you once knew and for the days when life was different and your Mom could express her love for you and your DD. Nancy is right...caretakers have so many concerns to deal with, and this is certainly one of them. Acknowledging the situation and recognizing that no matter how hard you try, you can't "help" her remember any better will be important. The best you can do is to make sure her needs are met and that you spend whatever time you can with her. Hard for you? Absolutely. But you will never regret it. My SIL never got over the need to try to "fix" my FIL as he declined...she was constantly barraging him with some kind of stimulus that only seemed to make him anxious and restless. Our hearts go out to you...and remember that sometimes the only thing you can do, whatever that might be, is the best thing at the time!!

On another note...love the granddog!!

Jineane, you deserve a big emoticon for tracking everything!! Hope you got some good garden work in today.

Nancy, what great planning ideas with the salads and ingredients. We do this, but I often forget and let it slide for weeks at a time. Thanks for a great reminder to get my "duff" in gear and plan it again!!

How is everyone else doing? We're eating a little lighter for a few days now as DH is beginning his prep for a colonoscopy on Friday. That doesn't mean I don't get into trouble one way or another, but it helps to a certain degree.

Kathy, there may be nothing worse or tougher than having a family member with last stages of dementia, whether due to Alzheimer's or another type. Please take care of yourself. I did my master's thesis on caring for the caregivers of loved ones. The price caregivers pay when they don't take care of themselves is particularly high in terms of health.

With this hot weather, Ed (my son) and I do salad for dinner often. To make it easier, we mix up the greens (lettuce, spinach, whatever you like) in a large bowl that stays good in the fridge for almost a week. Then we get different proteins (chicken, hardboiled eggs, shrimp, ham, beef, lamb, turkey, tofu, sausages, cheeses or whatever else you like), for each day. If the protein needs any cooking do a whole batch at one time, but you can also buy them already cooked in many cases. We then do berries and other fruits, and again, cut up a bunch at one time and store in fridge so it's ready to go. Do the same with veggies. Be adventurous with fruit a veggie choices - on Sunday we had leftover fresh fruit salad from brunch at church and we added that to the salad. Who'd ever think to use melon, grapes and pineapple? We did this a couple of years ago and I'm sure we didn't have the same meal twice all summer long. It's better than a salad bar and only requires preparation time of minutes most days and an hour or so about once a week. With other family members like son's or husbands, it can be as big and as hearty as they like. You can eat a huge portion for few calories. For dressing you can get creative too, I like balsamic vinegar in a spray bottle, but to keep things light and fresh, try lemon juice, fruity dressings, etc. I tend to forget how tasty these are when the fresh freggies aren't in season. I'm not a traditional salad person as I don't like onions, peppers, tomatoes, radishes, mushrooms, etc. So we had to get creative for me. It fills me up and Ed who already loves salad is delighted to find so many different ways to turn up the flavors.

Not the best start to my week as I had trouble falling to sleep last night. I probably only got about 3 ˝ hours sleep. I was planning to go to the pool this morning, but with such little sleep I decided to turn off the alarm and catch a few more winks. The rest of the day was OK. I actually tracked ALL my food for the day – something that doesn’t usually happen. I am working on being more consistent with healthy habits. I am a couple of cups short of my 8 glasses, but am working on that too. Tomorrow I will be spending some time in my garden. I need to keep the weeds in check and water all the plants and containers. That should keep me busy for a little while in the morning.
Really hoping that I sleep better tonight.

Darlene, I love when I lose a pound, but 3#...awesome!! I'd love to be plugging along at that rate! lol

Lin, you are full of information. I've never heard of duff referring to anything other than my backside! And...an hour on the treadmill? Holy moly! I've never done an hour on the treadmill, even when I was able to do that! Good for you.

Jineane, hope you made it to the pool.

And...this week I was not as successful as I had been the previous two and gained a little over a pound. I definitely know what it was. I ate too much. Sad, but true. Onward and upward, friends!!

who knew the definition of duff is a pudding? (A stiff flour pudding made with fruit and spices and boiled in a cloth bag or steamed.) I didn't
Growing up we were told to get off our duff and get to work, (as in meaning the buttocks or rump)..
then there is the movie, The Duff about a Designated ugly fat friend--I was that to a lot of folks growing up and in college....... emoticon
but don't be sad! I got off my duff yesterday and did an hour on the treadmill and I'm challenging myself to do the same thing for the next 100 days and see what happens........ emoticon

Good morning Challengers.

I am so far behind! How does that happen? I guess between age, work (that I get paid to do!), home, weekend guests - I'm exhausted.

I drank way too much soda this weekend. I just seemed to crave it. I rarely drink it but sometimes I do want one. Well I had more than 'one.' I think that caused the weight increase. It's OK. I'll get rid of this week.

Darlene - slow but steady is still progress. emoticon

I consider the iron to be an instrument of the devil and haven't touched one in a months. I think of wrinkles as a fashion statement. emoticon

All the talk about going to the pool makes me realize how I need to get back to it. Took some time off from going while we had a distant cousin visiting with us. So tomorrow morning I will set my alarm and get back to the water. Good thing I checked in here as I had myself talked into taking another day off. Thanks ladies.

It's so exciting to check in and see all the chatter. Great information. So much encouragement and support - I love this team!

I so love the pool. I need to be more 'committed.' I'm always so relaxed, happy, proud when I go to the gym and do my water workouts. I feel so good about myself. So why don't I push myself to get there more often? I'm lazy.

You are all encouraging me. Seriously. I thank you for that. I can do this. I'm off next week and I'm going to 'make sure!!!' that I get there more often. I'll spend more time on yoga too. I do like that.

Good morning, friends! Just stopping by to say hi and to see how you all are doing. We made a trip to see my sister yesterday and to take care of some business at her nursing home. She had something going on...some kind of entertainment...so we only visited about 30 minutes. Long trip for that, but I certainly don't want to discourage her from doing the activities they provide for the residents.

Becky, honey, don't ever feel like you're whining. We're here to support you and I'm quite certain we've all been where you are/were!

Cathy, you and CJ both like to iron. I actually like to iron, but I want to do it on my own terms. I just don't do it much anymore and I hate those 100% cotton things that have to be ironed or you can't wear them again! I know...I don't make sense. lol

I did check out the rec center here in the area. It's actually about $10 cheaper/month than the Y was where we did live. Now for me to go in some day and watch part of one of the classes before I decide. We now live where the street is level and very little traffic, so I can begin a bit of walking soon. So far I've found plenty of reasons not to!

Hope your week is going well. I'm trying to decide whether to go for leftovers for supper or something else and save the leftovers for another evening. Such big decisions!!! LOL

Back to tracking after a weekend off
Definitely not ready to not track and play it by sensing what I ate

For those on track, kudos
For those struggling, keep with it, you are worth it. emoticon
Gonna be rainy day, emoticon glad I can get my ironing done
Yes, I'm old fashioned, like the look of ironed cotton clothes
Hate it, but do it because I like how I look and feel in ironed clothes. emoticon

Hi, team. Work's been crazy busy since Thursday, and will continue so at least through this next week, so if I'm quiet, that's why. Forgot to even weigh last week, and still trying to break myself of the bad habit of just grabbing food rather than planning.

(Edited to remove a great deal of whining... LOL. Wishing everyone a great week.)

Kathy, functional fitness is increasingly more important as we age. When we don't any longer have the strength to do what we used to do safely. Fall can bring serious consequences and often lead to premature death.

The pool is a great option when it is available for you. It can strengthen and maintain healthy functionality.

Thanks for your comments about the personal trainer. Like I said, it is nothing I've ever considered. I was on the rec center website and it looks like they might have a group personal training class or two with maybe 3 or 4 people in it that was much cheaper. Not sure this is for me, but hey...I said I'd check it out!!

Functional fitness is just about the only thing I'm interested in these days, and that includes a lot of things for me: walking, bending, lifting (not heavy, heavy stuff, reaching and keeping my balance! And, since I hate, hate, hate exercise, it will be known as fitness for me from here on out! LOL

my best results were when I had a trainer through Golds Gym. I had 3, one I fired because she wouldn't listen to what I said and caused me great pain, but the other 2 really kept me on point. I was working a lot of overtime then, so I could afford the help, but it truly was worth it. the main thing is to not let them push you beyond what is good for your body, it's not worth it. Some places offer group trainers that do make it a bit more affordable.
Functionality is the main thing--my embarrassment at the pool is trying to get out of the lounge chair, too much ballast on the bottom to push up from the chair and I hate being that way! it is something I will be working on in the coming weeks, along with trying to be more consistent in working out, I've got to, I'm feeling like such a loser and not the good kind. Exercise will help that as well!
have a great weekend everyone emoticon

Saturday: my WI day...down 2.6 from 2 weeks ago. I suspect I was up on Saturday last week, but oddly for me, I didn't weigh myself that day. Odd, I say, as I do a daily weigh. Anyway, I'm grateful for today's loss and will focus on trying to keep the momentum going. One thing that is helping a lot is the "no evening eating" policy I have instituted! It's much easier with a 2 story house, as I can go upstairs away from the fridge and food! LOL

Had an appt with my NP yesterday and we had a long talk about weight, obesity, fitness, functional fitness, etc. She reminded me that as we get older our goals need to change and instead of worrying about running marathons (who worries about that????), we need to remember that we will have more important things to think about: can we stand up from a chair easily, can we still maneuver ourselves on and off the toilet, tie our shoes, go up and down steps, etc. This was only part of it, but some things I've been thinking about for awhile. She said whatever we can do to strengthen our muscles in legs and arms and core is most important, and however we can find a way to do it, just do it! So today, I will work on "just doing it." I agreed to look into the local rec center (we don't have a Y here where I moved). She even suggested hiring a trainer, something I have NEVER considered, primarily for the expense and reluctance to let someone else see how poorly I am able to function. Anyway, I left there with a lot to think about. She can relate, as she's in her 50s and has struggled with weight issues her entire life, lost a considerable amount with WW, but has gained some of it back, although she still looks great and has maintained at a healthy level for several years.

Hope things are going well for everyone!!! Hugs!

Another day in the pool. I had a moment of panic and embarrassment when I lost my balance on the water noodle. I couldn't stop going backwards or even put my feet on the bottom of the pool. Fortunately one of the ladies in my class saw what was happening and set me upright. After that, I held on to the side of the pool if balance was needed on the noodle.
I had a bit of a hard time with my right knee again when I got out of the pool, but the hot tub water helped.

Next class is Friday.

I'm only going to mention a few things, as there is so much I'd like to say, but no time tonight!

Becky, I'm so happy to know you're okay after that nasty fall. But, I know we all can empathize with you on the reason for it. How frustrating and embarrassing for you. Sharing that experience with friends where you feel safe to do so is so important. Thank you for sharing that with us. It certainly does give us motivation, doesn't it!!

Someone mentioned feeling apprehensive about being in a bathing suit and getting to the pool. I was, too. In fact, so much so that I put it off for a long time. But, once I managed that, I felt so much better about myself. In fact, I wrote a blog about it. Not sure if this will work, but check it out. It's from 3 years ago and mostly to do with the locker room, which was where my biggest fears were, but I think the same is true for the pool, as well. www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo

NSVs are really important, but like you, Kathy, it takes so much for things to "show up" and make a difference. In order for clothes to be looser, I have to shed at least 15 pounds or more, about 30 pounds (at this size) for a different size. But, Kathy, you help me remember it isn't always about a change in clothing size, etc, for a NSV to have significance for us.

Enough for tonight. I did a WI on Saturday (as I do everyday) but I didn't write it down and now we're so close to my next one, I'm going to wait it out and record it this Saturday.

So glad to see so many of you stopping by and chatting. Love you all and find this to be so important to my journey...and hope it is for you, too. xoxox Love and hugs!
