I found a great way to test if you are using your arms on your swing.

Use a lighter than normal weight and run a towel through the horn. Grasp the towel on each side of the horn about 4 to 6 inches from the bell. Now swing.

If the bell is hanging below your hands, you are using your arms to lift the weight.

If the bell is out straight from your hands, you are doing the hinge snap correctly and not using your arms.

I do this periodically just to test that I am not using my arms.

Hope this helps you with your form, it sure helped me.

Sean, Lorraine is another of this team's Yodas, offering great advice. Look at what she swings!

Don't know if you've read this: https://www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_me

If not, go back and read it. All the force that propels the swing upward should come from the hip snap. You also may want to try doing swings waist high until you get the form down pat. If you're not generating enough force with the hip snap, then your arms and shoulders are taking over to get the bell to shoulder height. Your arms should be nothing more than tethers to attach the bell....keep a LOOSE grip on the bell. I actually use more of an open palm grip, using my fingers as hooks...VERY loose for swings.

Hey Sean, listen to Blitz, for he is wise and experienced.

From a newbie's perspective, I'd suggest practicing deadlifts to get the feel of the hip snap and also practicing the swing motion WITHOUT the KB so you can concentrate on relaxing your arms and shoulders. Good luck!

To ensure the hips are the driving force in the swing don't stop driving them forward until they lockout. At the top of the swing the kb should be at shoulder height, your glutes tight, and hips pressing forward. Your shoulders should be slightly behind your hips without being pinched together like a doing a row. If you stop pushing forward with your hips without bring your shoulders back then the kb has inertia that can pull you forward off of balance and that may be why you're pinching your shoulders, to pull back the weight and keep you on balance.

Try comparing your form to the guy in this video. His swings are coming below his shoulders so they aren't as far back as mine would be.

I just started this morning and one thing I've noticed is that it feels like the energy for the swing is coming from my upper back and shoulders. Almost like I'm pulling the KB up rather than popping it up with my hips. Does anyone have any advice on how to relax the arms and shoulders so that it is just your hips that does the work?
