Oh, yes, I'm from the 'clean your plate' club era myself.

The 2 bites can work 'if I let it work!' It's hard work to say the least depending on what I'm taking 2 bites of. Cheesecake - well now I can take some mighty big bites. This is still a very difficult lesson for me. I don't eliminate foods from my eating plan, but I certainly do avoid some. So when I practice the 2 bites method, I try to make sure I am also practicing portion control. A small serving is something I'm learning to live with.

MINDFULSPARK - that shock collar you sometimes mention sure seems to do a good job for you emoticon . I could sure use one myself at times!

Phyllis - let me know when you master food and chocolate tastes as good as green beans and broccoli! That was hilarious ! ! !

I have been hanging on by a thread for weeks now! Every weekend is a food extravaganza with friends and, although I set out with a plan (being perfect is NOT part of my plan) and stick to it reasonably well Friday - Sunday, by Sunday evening I am crashing and caving into all kinds of junk! I think I have the same kind of eating disorder that Gil mentioned - sugar/fat/wheat/salt combos in any given order! I find that I am particularly susceptible when I am tired either physically or mentally.

Last Thursday I started my Weight Loss Journal and in large letters I am noting the lessons that I am learning. Today I entered DO NOT LET YOURSELF GET TOO TIRED. I think I am also noticing a pattern occurring when I cut my carbs too low which has been happening more frequently since I joined WW. So the second lesson I entered this morning (after I finished a bowl of cereal with milk & banana, followed by a bag of homemade Pita Chips) DO NOT LET YOUR CARB INTAKE GET TOO LOW.

This is where today's lesson is going to fit in and help me. I am going to pay close attention to which carbs really bring me joy within those first two bites. I will use these foods / carbs in smaller, but more consistent manners and if this idea works it should help me cut back on my carb binges.

It did me good to read my previous post from 11/20/17. This is a lesson that I need to continually work on. Home is still my biggest challenge. Yesterday we had company and we skipped a proper lunch or dinner. They left a cute gift bag with chocolate raisins and peanuts.

I started with the "healthy" peanuts. They were awesome and worth every bite! The chocolate raisins however were not and I noticed with the first evaluating bite, but did not stop.

Fortunately the bags were quite small and shared with DH. Unfortunately, I did not stop there. Thankfully, I did "minimize the damage" and today I will "protect my program" and work hard to get right back on track. emoticon emoticon

Day # 15 First Two Bites
This is a great concept and I will use it to eat mindfully today.
Just like the last time, “dinner” will be with my Homemakers group tonight! Odd to see it came up for the same lesson, we only meet once a month, but I can use the two bites for whatever is served for dessert.

Sometimes I can't remember what I had for lunch and yet I can remember from months ago what I chose for this experiment in the past. Once it was mashed potatoes from KFC and once a piece of wedding cake. No real need for me to experiment again!
emoticon When I get to the point that chocolate can be as unforgettable as green beans, broccoli and lettuce I will know I’ve mastered food!

I jumped from Day 1 to Day 15 to join everybody but that works perfectly because what I put for Day 1 was "I always eat at the table with no distractions". This will allow me to really focus on the 1st two bites. One of my challenges is I eat SO fast, this will help.

I have noticed the better I eat and the closer to what I really want that I eat ... it doesn't take much to make me happy. My taste buds have truly changed.

The part of this lesson I like is taking the time to really savor and appreciate the flavors and texture of the first bites of a food you are eating. Too often I just eat out of habit and don’t pay enough attention. Recently I decided to only eat things I really liked, to stop eating if I didn’t enjoy it, and that has helped me really concentrate on what the food tastes like.

As far as eating two bites of something delicious and then getting rid of it, I didnt have the opportunity to do that today (I wasn’t feeling well and only ate small meals.) The times in the past when it has worked for me was when we are at a restaurant and I just have a couple spoonfuls of someone’s dessert.

Enjoyed reading all the great posts past and present! Looked back at my earlier posts and the one from Jan. 2016 says it best.

I still have not taken two bites of something Really delicious and then thrown the rest away. But my first time through, as suggested, (and as often as I can remember to do it now) I close my eyes and really savor and delight in the texture and taste of different foods.

Doing this helps me to slow down and truly appreciate what I am eating. Whenever I do this, I never feel guilty. When I eat mindlessly, I feel jipped and sorry. All those calories and so little appreciation. emoticon

At restaurants I can usually choose to savor 2 to 4 bites of a shared, super high cal dessert and leave the rest for everybody else or to stop at 1 bite when the dessert is not that great. But still working at what happens at home. Planning ahead is exactly what I need to keep doing to avoid pitfalls.

I am cooking Thanksgiving. My plan is to not make too much and to send much of the leftovers (especially desserts) home with others. I feel deprived and pay for it later if I do not have some dessert and other favorite holiday foods. We are all different but 2 bites just doesn't do it for me. My goal is to have one day of moderate celebrating and then back on track. Not doing this has been a big part of previous holiday gains. emoticon emoticon

I find this two bites exercise very difficult. I did think that I'd try it this evening with my coconut macaroon, but after my soup & crumpets, I didn't want any macaroon. I stopped half-way through my tiny portion of applesauce & yoghurt, because I was full, not because I'd got what I needed from the first two bites.

If this is your first time doing this day, don't give up the 100DWL if you can't face this activity today! You are not alone; if you have a chance to read back through the thread you will find some very interesting stories!

Day 15, First Two Bites

Mastered Food....Phyllis, if I didn't know you better...I'd say you are a dreamer...actually I know you are a dreamer but I'm not sure food mastery is possible. I join you in making it a goal anyway.

First two bites - I put this to work fairly frequently when I know that I am in danger of just diving in to something I should not be eating. Two bites, slowly eaten....and I am able to back off.
It doesn't work always but it often works for me.

I did this last Saturday when I was at my sister's house. She had a yummy looking strawberry dessert. I dipped a very small portion. Even with not knowing its calorie content, I had enough room in my daily intake range to handle a little. But you must be strong enough to stop....and I was that day. There are days I probably would just avoid it altogether.
I never thought about really focusing and taking time with the first two bites. Since I am trying to slow down on my eating (I eat too fast), I am going to try and savor the first two bites of everything I eat.
I am not a person to waste food, so I would never want to get a whole serving of something, take two bites, and then throw it away. I would just get a very small serving to start with.

I have done the two bite challenge in the past and don't know that this is something I need to practice again today.

The first couple of times it set of eating triggers. The third time I was successful with it.

There is this one and maybe two more days out of 100 that I will most likely skip. I fully support those who want to give it a try.

Thanks, Dona. I can remember , long ago, I consciously would always order the biggest meal on the menu. Usually it was a big pasta dish. Now I don't have to do that! However, I have come a long way! I have never eaten only part of a dessert! emoticon

That would be a huge experiment.

Yesterday I ordered my meal with no gravy and with "both vegetables." Most people order only one of the 2 vegetables. And I did not order the potato. Well, later another lady with us ordered similar to my meal except she got the scalloped potatoes, extra gravy on her meat, and something else that I did not order. Well, the other woman with us said, "Chris, now doesn't that look much better than what you ordered." HUH???? What a weird thing to say!

In answer, twice, I said I ordered exactly what I wanted. She repeated her sentence, so I had to repeat my sentence. I found it all very strange indeed! emoticon

Chris, maybe you could make it into an experiment to see how those other three ladies will react. You could cut your cheesecake (or whatever) and say "does anyone want half of this - I can't eat it all?"

You might also get brave enough to say, 'I'm cutting down a bit on these desserts, I want to lose a few pounds.'

You can have fruit & yogurt or jello or something when you get back to your apartment.

"With each food you eat today, pay close attention to the first two bites. Notice how they taste in comparison to the rest of the food.". This is the best part of this lesson, as far as I'm concerned. It has helped me to really appreciate the taste of my food - ALL my food, not just desert type food. I don't eat much that I absolutely don't love and agree with you, Aura, that fuel tastes pretty darn good!

Chris, you're really developing good awareness! Practice some kind of line like "I guess I'm just too full tonight " or something if you decide to leave some of your food. Or start leaving just a little, then a little more until they get used to it! But the basic thing is, do really enjoy the taste of food! I find the more I enjoy my food, the easier it is to follow my body's directions when it says "ok, I 'm full!"

Maybe I will try this tomorrow. I am just reading it and it is past 6:00 in the evening. I ate dinner with 3 other women (4 people to a table in our residence0. If I had taken 2 bites of the creamsicle cheesecake--and stopped-- emoticon the ladies at my table would have been all over me. emoticon I am way stronger than I was in the past. It will be very interesting to try this in front of them. One person comments on everything anyone does! Another person is very overweight and today ordered 2 scoops of ice cream for dessert. the scoops were exceptionally large today. She ate it all. I know I would have, too. My cheesecake was not a large piece. Thank God.

I can't do this challenge. It is better for me to plan my dessert carefully and make sure my portion is accurate and small. I am another brought up on never wasting food and I would rather just not take it in the first place.

I will not do this exercise. I've had a go, several times, and decided it's just not worth it. The kinds of foods Linda is talking about are triggers for me, and will lead to more eating. No thank you! I know now that it's better for me to just avoid them completely.

Here's something I posted before, which I hope will help anyone who also feels freaked out by today's lesson!

"I can assure you all that if you keep working your way through the book, there will be some you just don't do - but it really doesn't matter - it's all learning. I still find that I'd rather not have a cookie or slice of cake, rather than eat 2 bites and put it aside. I think some people (like me I think) do have a biological 'addiction' to sugar and stuff - which does trigger more eating."

There have been widely differing viewpoints on this lesson. I just read back over some of the March posts too. I have continued to use this lesson from time to time. Usually hubs will agree to share a dessert with me on a special occasion and I can have just two bites. It really is true that those first bites of a really good dessert are emoticon emoticon emoticon
but after that I am able to quit. Thanks to lots of practice. This lesson has been healthy because I am a member of my mom's "clean plate club" (yes, I heard about the starving children in some other country too) so if I don't have a whole dessert to myself it is easier to just have two bites.

I still can't really get my head around this message behind this one. Portion control maybe?

I tend not to start any foods I would be better off not eating from a health perspective. It hasn't been easy because I could chomp my way through a packet of chips with the best of them in the past. Discovering my grumbly gall bladder was in fact perfectly ok and I had a fatty liver instead was a big wake-up call. Major dietary re-think!

Also I came from a household where my Mom would have a hissy fit if we put something on our plate that we didn't finish. So just eating two mouthfuls - however much we appreciated them - and then leaving food on our plate would elicit a remark about all the starving children in the world. If Mom was really cross, we'd get the left-overs on a tea plate to finish before we could start our next meal. That was a leveller!

I like Sarah's idea of 'intentional eating' posted below.

This is what I love about 100 Days. Makes you think!

I have a hard time with this as well... UNLESS I concentrate on my "intentional" eating. I went to a WL group a few months ago and learned a lot about intentional eating. Eating slowly and enjoying the flavors.

It's just something I / We have to practice. The trick is remembering! :)

If you're hungry the first 2 bites, for me, will have flavor. Then after I've taken away my hunger the food really doesn't have much taste. If you're not hungry it won't taste as sweet if you were hungry. If you're not hungry and have the sweet you could end up eating the whole thing because there really isn't much taste.

A lot of the time, I'm just curious about a food and two bites is enough to satisfy my curiosity. Often I realize I don't even like the food.....like the cheesecakes at Cheesecake Factory ( with apologies to those who love them) but I find that they look better than they taste. Two bites is more than enough for me.

In fact a lot of desserts sound better than they actually are.

I like this rule and I intend to use it. I'll make exceptions for items I truly love the taste off.

So do you have likes and dislikes in food? Do you go by texture? I hope you don't mind my asking? emoticon

First two bites.....I can't apply this to my eating because I don't taste most things...I know it sounds crazy!
I can taste somethings like sugar...strange....Anyway....I'm going to apply the two bite rule to food period, and see what happens when I have the conversation with myself about it.
Sorry if that doesn't make sense...lol....I'm tired and usually don't surf spark people in the evening.

Uhm....I've been MIA at this spot........Should have read here before having that donut. But....it was one donut, not 3, a Bavarian filled (favorite) and I did finish it. We have donuts once a month for sale day and I normally leave them alone except for an apple fritter on occasion...and today's "selection".

I gave the rest away to a lady who's son asked if he could have one. I told him to take what was left and he was so excited. he told his Mom...."we cashed out!". Too cute. He made my day.

I remember the two bites thing as a negative....LOL....as in a kid whining about eating veggies....I'd NOT do two bites of anything really tasty...so I'm with the one leaving it in the store....

I won't be eating anything off my plan today!!!

But when I really do want the taste of something ... two bites DOES satisfy that taste.

My hubby has a small stash of his special, special things. They sit there allllll alone for months. When he wants a "taste" that's exactly what he gets himself ... a taste.

He is my hero ... that I strive to be!!!

There are some things I simply would never be able to stop with just 2 bites, i.e. Snickers!! I love those things and I know I do not have any control over them.

2 bites is a great way to handle many other food choices though. It's kind of like a buffet or smorgasbord - try a taste of a lot of different foods. In that respect I could handle it -minus the Snickers.

Day 15 - two bites?

I have done this successfully.....and I have failed miserably at it. The difference, maybe mood or level of motivation that day? I don't know. Anyway I think I have learned this lesson because it is easy for me to take two bites of a treat AFTER a meal and sometimes I will do that but I seldom have dessert. It would be well nigh impossible for me to take two bites at the beginning of a meal if I were really hungry.
This lesson is really just for treats as far as I am concerned. I find that if I eat a healthy meal as planned, then dessert doesn't call to me as it once did.

Day 15: First two bites
Power of the first two bites
You may not realize it, but the first two bites of any food will always have the most flavor. If you keep eating after that, you're just "feeding." Of course, if you're physically hungry, eating more of the food serves a purpose.
But if you want to appreciate the flavor, be aware that no matter how much you eat, the taste won't get any more wonderful than those first two bites.
Is it worth eating more?
After you finish those two bites, decide if you truly need more. In most cases, you don't. Once in a while, a food will taste so phenomenal that it's worth the mountain of calories and fat grams it contains. But in reality, very few types of candy, cookies, or even cheesecake fit into that category.
When you really pay close attention to the taste, you may decide this one isn't as special as you'd anticipated. If that's the case, stop eating.
Choose one of your favorite foods such as carrot cake, and then focus on all the details and tastes of the first two bites. Let yourself appreciate the flavors. No not going there. too easy to keep eating.
After the first two bites, stop eating and get rid of the rest of the food. In your notebook, write down the details about this experience
With each food you eat today, pay close attention to the first two bites. Notice how they taste in comparison to the rest of the food. It does go against my frugal nature to waste food which is another reason I would not want to intentionally get a food to only try two bites.
Maybe with lunch I will try the notice the tastes but will keep eating as need my nourishment.
I need to really taste what I'm eating and if it isn't worth the calories I won't finish it! It's what I do long-term that matters not just today.
I do better when I just stay away from those foods that trigger cravings or binges for me.
"Nothing tastes better than that first two bites. Chew slowly and enjoy flavor and texture"
This one is hard as who likes to throw food out. I rather not even not start. But if I find something I don't like after the first two bites I will stop eating it. I eat according to what exchanges I have left if I do then I eat. yes sometimes I am short or over as I am not perfect.
I do need to work on this esp. at social or buffets settings and Pot luck meals.

Day 15 – First two bites
This is an exercise that I have done in the past and I remember that when it was a piece of "not so good wedding cake" that I had been waiting all week for, I had no trouble stopping after those two bites.
However when it turns out to be something really good I can't just throw it out and keep going until it's gone.
The lesson I personally learned is to try to really taste what I'm eating and if it isn't worth the calories I don't finish it! It's what I do long-term that matters not just today.

I'm anxious to try this. In theory it makes sense. Now I have to put it in action.

My guess, as with the rest of you, is that sometimes it will be easier than others. That's true with most things. I will say that as a rule when I give in and eat 'the whole piece or PieceS' I'm so unhappy with myself that trying this 2 bite theory may help me.

I'm noticing that the more 'healthy' foods and habits are beginning to click. I'm enjoying this tremendously and that's important.
