It will feel strange, Kathleen. How long will she be gone?

I bought 2 new bins last week when we were at Target so I can organize and store more of my fabric. I like the clear-bodied bins so I can see what's inside without having to open them and dig through. I need to get all of this organized so it can easily be put into storage if/when we sell this house.

Kiddo #2 is heading back to her over-seas job, so I'll be reordering to fill in the gaps. It will feel terribly empty for a while.

I cleaned out a tall file cabinet and burned 25 years worth of old tax returns. I don't have a shredder, but a wood stove does the trick!

We spent the weekend cleaning around the outside of the cabin and I had a burn pile to toss things onto. Can you tell I like to burn things? It has been spring-like weather around here, so it felt good to work outside for a while.

I've made it through 3 drawers of a 4-drawer file cabinet and a metal file box. I'm making some envelopes to send to the kids with the school records and miscellaneous things I've found. They can look at them, have a chuckle and toss or save as they choose. I can't save everything.

I also found a lot of paperwork from both houses that may come in handy now that I can put my hands on them.

What an amazing day, Betsy! I wish my pantry was that clean! I'm pretty good at rotating the stock, but things still get away from me. I agree about having some kind of receptacle for donations. It's the best first step toward getting things out of the house.

Thanks, Terri, I read somehwere that the biggest mistake people make is not having a container of some sort readily available and designated for items one wishes to donate. We now have 2 boxes on the landing of our stairs and the big bag in our bedroom. I also designated the top of our jam and dessert freezer as another location for the basement. It is getting full so I will need to find another box!

Today after I scanned groceries, I cleaned out the bottom portion of our pantry and donated LOTS of coffee ( bags we collected from hotels) to DH's school, filled the sink with severely outdated flour, powdered sugar, graham crackers and more. We have not had a Japanese student live with us in nearly two decades but we still had a very large bag of assorted foods one had given to us. I couldn't bear to throw it out so I asked DD1 if she had any interest or if any of the teachers at school might use some of it for a lesson of some sort. I was going to give DD2 a hot chocolate mix with dried marshmallows in a mug ( teacher gift) but noticed it was best if used by March of 2007, yuck! The mug went into a donation box along with a glass jar for spaghetti noodles with a broken hinge and a few other treasures I found. The pantry looks amazing and there are only a few things in there that are not food.

Excellent idea, Betsy. My closet is getting pretty full again, too and I seldom buy clothes for myself. My mom works at the Discover Shop (for the cancer society) and often brings me things from there. My drawer of work tshirts that I keep for cleaning and gardening is also full. It may be time yo turn some of them into rags.

Hello Ladies, I keep forgetting this thread is here. We have half of our Christmas decorations put away and we had the reverse problem, we found things we forgot to put up! emoticon Oh well, they have been moved so they will be remembered next year. Our basement is just shy of being ready for an episode of Hoarders so I have started pulling out items and have them waiting for a donation box. I also started a large trash bag of clothing for the Women's crisis shelter and kept that in our room so I can add to it until it is full. There are some clothes in there that I have received as gifts and never worn.

Every year, Kathleen! I don't think I've ever managed NOT to find something left over. That's okay, because these particular items were meant to be part of the purge anyway. I divided up my ceramic houses among my 8 granddaughters this year, so each of them have something to start their own collections or just to have as a memory of mine. I only kept the 5 very small houses that all fit in my kitchen window and those will go to my youngest gd eventually. We had already given away a few boxes of decorations to my newly-married gd last year to decorate her first tree in her own home, so I'm on a roll.

This week, I'm intent on purging and organizing my desk and file cabinet. It may take me a few days, but it has to be done--and done in a way that will make it easy to find what I need when I need it.

LOL, Terri! There's always that one little sneaky thing that hangs around past it's holiday assignment. One time I found a mini nativity scene when I was putting up Easter decorations. This is why I keep my decorating to a minimum now-a-days. :-)

I made my way through the paperwork on my desk; read the pile of newspapers I needed to catch up on; finished off a ball of yarn (I won't tell you how many balls I added to the stash; that's another situation.); took care of the shred pile; and did ALL the laundry. And it's not even 11:00!

Well, I always find something left after all the decorations are put away and this time it was some little hand towels in the guest bathroom. I'm not even going to keep them. They'll go in the next donation box and someone else can enjoy them.

The tree is down and the house undecorated for Christmas. Things are packed back into bins and stacked in the basement for the season. I really need to tackle my desk today as it's a disaster right now.

Yesterday I went through a box of old teaching materials that were part of last years basement purge. I passed a few things on to DIL, saved my original certification, put a few items in the shred pile and tossed the rest. It was nice remembering the decade I spent subbing in our local school district, but that is in the past.

Terri - treat yourself to that nice new shirt and new jammies. It's fun sewing for others, but also fun sewing for yourself. :-)

emoticon Well Kathleen, I did make a start at straightening things up, but then came across some pretty plaid flannel that wanted to be made into a shirt--for me. So what could I do? I found the pattern and cut out a shirt for myself!

I do have a lot of flannel to use up and there's still plenty of cold weather left in the year--and I've sewn for everyone else already, so now it's my turn. I also need a new pair of pajamas, so might just keep going for a while.

We'll leave our tree and decorations up for at least a couple more weeks. One year it was still up on Valentine's Day. The undecorating is no fun.
I also get sucked in to making rather than tidying. It's way more fun!

Okay--now we all get to UNdecorate and put things away. We never did get any lights up on the outside of the house because of Steve's construction project and I think he's happy not to have them to take down. I've begun to put a few things away, but the tree will be the biggest project. I may tackle that today, but certainly before the new year.

I also have a lot of sewing debris upstairs that needs to be sorted and stored. I'm kind of afraid of getting started on that because I know I'm going to want to work on something while up there. I have some unfinished projects--AKA UFOs--and am still in the mood to sew, so I know I'll get pulled in. Of course, that's not a bad thing. It's just not cleaning.

We each have our own threshold, Kathleen. I am constantly fighting the stacks of things that are set down in a temporary place and then seem to grown roots there. As we get ready to sell this house and move to a smaller one, our mission is clear. We HAVE to downsize and eliminate things, so are on the same page now. It's just hard.

All our wrapping is done and I've had to re-wrap one gift that the cat decided to open...

All gifts are wrapped and under the tree. It look especially bountious this year.

DH likes a lot of Christmas clutter -- adding decor to what we already have rather than swapping out the regular for the seasonal. Not me! The extra just makes me feel crowded and confined. So we have a bit of a struggle. But there's only one box, one pile of displaced piano music, and one (rather large) pile of unread newspapers sitting out, and the add-on decor has been limited to the living room.

We're doing alright.

Gd finally came over last night and took a dozen ceramic houses and most of my little people for a Christmas village. I was going to take them to the consignment shop and sell them, but would have been in a lot of trouble. It hadn't occurred to me that the kids might want them. I guess they were as attached to my tradition as I was. I'm glad they'll carry on and enjoy them in their homes. I still have a bin full of a matching set of country cottages that will go to my first gd, a tiny set in my kitchen window that will eventually go to my youngest gd, and 7 Victorian houses left over for the middle one to choose from. Storage is the issue for the younger ones who still live at home.

Cleaned out the basket that has been on the counter since, what ... May? June? Two rummage sale items; one just needed to be cleaned up to use this summer (which cleaning took all day), and the third will stay on the counter to prevent the cat from jumping up there. Looks so much better, and now there is more room for performing kitchen-y tasks.

I did the mending yesterday, which didn't take care of much, but did get something off the nagging to-do list. Today, on my search for an old baby chair I had stored in the basement, I also got rid of a bag full of old sheets and pillowcases plus several empty boxes. Our garbage and recycling bins are full and the garbage doesn't get picked up until Saturday. Uh oh.

I have always held onto things that were sentimental or meaningful to me during periods of my life. I finally purged a drawer full of old letters and other correspondence from people I haven't had contact with for several decades, but who were important to me in my youth. While it wasn't an unpleasant experience to go through them, it was extremely difficult to dispose of them. Having done it, though, I have no regrets and now have more space in that drawer! My practice nowadays is to ask myself if my children are going to be interested in my keepsakes and if the answer is "no" then I can convince myself to turn loose of them. At this end of my timeline, I'm getting to be more and more inclined to "pack light" and only keep the things I either USE or LOVE. If all I'm doing is dusting it or moving the boxes around from space to space, it probably won't hang around for long.

I certainly don't have boundless energy and have days that I don't even get dressed if I don't have to go out. But I do love gardening and preserving the harvest for my family, so will likely continue with that as long as I'm able. Hopefully, some of the grands will develop an interest and want to learn from me while I am still active and have all my equipment. I'm just about ready to put things away for the season and move on to sewing for the holidays. Once I pack away all 3 dehydrators, the 2 canners and all the boxes of jars, lids and rings, I will have a brand new kitchen! At least it will seem so, because I haven't seen parts of my counters for months!

Terri - Good luck with that canning! You sound like my mother-in-law -- she always has some major fruit/vegetable project going on, whether growing, harvesting, canning or planning, among all the other family/neighbor/volunteer things she takes on. She's a bundle of inexhaustable energy and an inspiration for sure!

My paperwork purge was emotional, for sure, revisiting a couple gut punches that changed things forever, but there's a bit more sense of peace now that the last tidying up has been done. Life does find its new equilibrium

Today is house tidying day, and I plan to swap out my seasonal clothes, but if I get an offer to babysit Grandbaby #1 I will skip all that!

Hallelujah! So glad you have that job behind you and I hope it wasn't as emotionally difficult as you expected. However, if it was, I hope it was cathartic.

I FINALLY worked through the last bushel of apples that the grands picked for me and have two turkey roasters full of apple butter cooking down in the oven. I'll can it in the morning, Lord willing.

It took longer than I thought (not in doing the task, but in getting to the task), but I got my medium and large piles of paperwork sorted and filed. It took me on an unplesant trip down memory lane -- which is partly why they stayed unsorted for so long -- but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I'm so glad to have the finally off my to-do list.

More apples done, making another 16 jars of apple butter. Today, I made some pie filling, but can't make the pies until after my oven gets serviced today. I've decided to start practicing on pie crust pastry. Mine is not good, so I clearly need more practice--at least, that's what I always tell the kids when they demur from a task, claiming that they don't know how or aren't good at it. Time to take my own advice.

Ironing done--Whew! Another pair of jeans hemmed and belt loops moved. Can you believe that? I got these on sale for $12.50 a pair and it was a great deal because they'll last him for at least 3 years--BUT-- I forgot that the belt loops are configured differently and don't hold his Leatherman tool holster in the right place or hold his leftover belt down. So, he asked me if I could move the loops...sigh. Sure I can, but it's going to take a while.

Three pairs of little boy jeans patched, two pairs of DS2's work jeans patched, 1 of DS1's and 2 of Steve's jeans shortened and ready to wear. I still have 6 more to shorten for Steve, but those will go a lot faster than the patching did.

I have a shelf in the laundry room with several pairs of shoes on it that none of the grands want to claim, so I'm going to make up a bag for the local charity. I've been wanting to remove that shelf and reorganize that room for a while and this will be a start.

I've almost finished drying the pears, so they will be gone tomorrow and I hope they take the fruit flies with them. I still have lots of boxes of jars and empty boxes from jars that are now full of canned things. Beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel.

Convinced Kiddo #2 to convince DH to clean up the pile of stuff that accumulated and was gathering dust on the card table DH had set up up for photo scanning a year ago. It had become a depository for things he didn't know what to do with, and inconveniently blocks all my sewing stuff. My pleas to take care of the clutter pile had gone unheaded since June, but Kiddo #2 had a magical way with him, and it was tidied up in 15 minutes.

I had a productive weekend with lots of help at times. I kept 4 grands for several hours on Friday in the middle of making salsa, canning tomatoes and applesauce, doing DIL's laundry (about 8 loads) and everybody helped. I was like the Ringmaster in a circus, but the kids were all quick to jump in and do what I asked and we kept things going and got an enormous amount done. The tomatoes, peppers and apples are all done for now and I only have a few pears left to dry. We were able to put 10 lbs of mushrooms in the dehydrator and they are now in 2 half-gallon jars, ready to use for soups. Seven quarts of applesauce, 18 pints of roasted salsa, and 10 qts. of stewed tomatoes are on the shelf in the basement. We also ran some oversized zucchini through the salad shooter and now have 10 ziplock bags with 6 cups of shredded zucchini in the freezer for later. That was a lot of zucchini!

I went through my sort-of junk drawer, paid the bills, filed the paperwork, wrote three letteres and transferred two envelopes worth of notes and pages torn from magazines onto the appropriate computer document. It's like trimming your bangs when you actually need a hair cut, but it'll help.

We had 4 families going in on the tuna and it took a bit of time and a rested brain to do the calculations for distribution. One person only wanted 2 dozen half-pints, one person wanted to spend $100, I paid for 100 lbs. of whole fish...so it took some time and thinking. I delivered one box yesterday and GD Mary Beth will pick hers up after work tonight. I can box mine up and put it in the basement and the rest will be boxed for DD1 to get as soon as she can. I need my kitchen and dining room back!

We picked a pear tree clean yesterday and got a full wheelbarrow and two buckets full of pears. Now I have to spread them out on tables to ripen and will start putting them in the dehydrator. I also have 5 gallons of apples to dry, so lots of fruit right now and it's ALL over the place!

I think I finished the last of the movingtoanewhouse projects for Kiddo #1. Now a couple weeks of late nights at the office, then MAYBE I'll be able to hit some of my own projects.

I went through numerous email and bookmark folders on my computer and deleted a bunch of them yesterday. Friday I organized my little pile of books to read so they don't just gather dust -- I have them queued up and ready to go. Had planned to do some mending today, but DH has taken over my sewing space (again) and I just don't have it in me to fight that fight this weekend.

Well, now I have 186 jars of albacore tuna in my kitchen and dining room, waiting to be sorted and sent off to different homes. I did clear my kitchen counters before we started though. It was clutter-free for a while. I need to find some boxes and do the Math to figure out the amounts that go to each family member, as they all contributed different amounts of $$ to purchase the fish. That will have to come tomorrow, after I'm more rested and can be trusted to do that calculations.

I came home to a big grocery bag of green beans--all cleaned and snapped for me. All I had to do was put them into jars, add the water, and pop them into the pressure canner. DS1 and wife have a nice garden and she doesn't can, so they bring it to me and I do it--and then we share. I love it!

Good for you in getting those trophies (and dust) back into the hands of the rightful owner! LOL

Kiddo #1 is having his housewarming today. I've been spending a lot of time there helping them get their house in shape and watching the baby (my favorite task). I'm thinking this will mean a little more "free time, me time" so I can return to my own household decluttering projects. Idk how having a house guest for the next month will affect things. I'm just rolling with it.

Between cleaning the kitchen and bathroom at the cabin and making applesauce and canning here, I've created AND cleared a lot of clutter this week. The cabin has been pretty gross but is getting better. I killed a mouse and laid a trap for more in the kitchen and we've been cleaning out lots of their "leavings" throughout. The bathroom got a good once over and the lower cabinets in the kitchen are about 3/4 done.

I cleaned and grated the last of the cucumbers that I had last night and got my kitchen a little more useable. I'll turn it all into dill relish this morning and be done with this batch. I might be sorry, but I'm going to can it in pint jars instead of half-pint because that's what I have most of.

Did get rid of one box from the spare room---it had extra lunch stuff that finally had a space in the kitchen. I wanted to get rid of the kuerig cup box in there but still not enough room---that box holds a lot! But we are going thru quite a few with Dh not being able to stand and make his coffee in his regular pot---I can at least use the Kuerig to make him coffee---otherwise he would not coffee---LOL I decided to go ahead and shred all my mom's papers---filled up a whole bag of shredded paper and took that out. That emptied a file box that I can now donate for someone else to have. I did put a few things away in there, too. Lots more to do but at least a little progress.

I did go in the spare room and worked on a corner. Started a donation bag.
Decluttered a kitchen counter so I have room to prepare and cook by the stove.
Need to go back in the spare room again today and pick an area to attack.

We just got back from a week at the fair. I've done at least a dozen loads of laundry and now only have our 2 sleeping bags to wash before I put them away.

The garden at our friend's house is bursting at the seams and she's overrun with cucumbers and zucchini. The tomatoes are beginning to ripen, too--and we have a LOT of them. There's going to be a constant ebb and flow of clutter around here for the next several weeks with produce and canning.

I kept 7 grands here yesterday and they "decluttered" my pantry by quite a lot! Breakfast took care of a dozen eggs, about a pint of jam and a pound of bacon; lunch finished up 2 loaves of bread, more jam (pbj), a pound of cheese (grilled cheese) and the last of my fresh fruit. I had put a huge pot of red, black and kidney beans on to cook to make chili to can and take to the fair/camp next week, so that fed everyone dinner. I still had 13 quarts of chili to can after everyone ate.

It might be a good time to clean the inside of my fridge since it's a lot emptier today that before!

I'm not making much headway here. Have been helping Kiddo #1 with necessary landscaping (to keep the basement dry) at his new house, and have been taking advantage of the daylight hours and summer weather. And having lots of granny/baby time, which beats decluttering every single time!
