That is really soooo sad to be sooooo self conscious that you shun the very golden opportunity to develop your language skills......sad ......

Surely there must be some students who are wanting to go to university ...who want to skip the prep class or at least beable to do well in the exam....Well just keep after it...you will learn soon enough...

I am not doing very well on this challenge am i....its only because i spend soooo much time at neopets...

Funny there is only one person in this small village that 'speaks' English and she is an English teacher. Two years ago when we stayed here I had just met her and she picked up her purse and jacket so I asked her, "Oh are you leaving now?" She walked away and replied, "Yes, I live here." I said, "No, not living, leaving." She said, "I live here in Turkey." Then, she must have realized by the look on my face that she made an error. I was really shocked at her low level of English comprehension as a teacher of English. In the States you cannot teach a foreign language professionally in a school without complete fluency. I never saw her again on that visit. Now I am back two years later and she avoids me like the plague. She will say hi to everyone else and not even look my way as she passes my house very quickly always in a rush to get somewhere. Yesterday she passed me and said good evening to the five other people with me and ignored me. I said directly to her in English, "Hello. How are you?" She replied, "Findanksanyou?"- this seems to be how Turks for only know a few English phrases reply to 'How are you?'- by running 'Fine, thanks. And you?' together into one word. I said, "You never ever talk to me!" She replied, "Yes, yes, yes. (very long pause) aaaaah...tomorrow." So I don't think she will be very helpful at all. You would think that she would be more interested in improving her English since it is so bad and the fact that it is her job. If she is a correct representative of the local English teachers at the government schools- then it is no wonder that my niece and nephew who have been studying English for 4 years cannot even barely say anything past hello to me. Actually the women that lives next door to me who took English in high school 18 years ago understands me better.

I am in a very small village. I am thinking about advertising for someone like you mentioned in the closest large town. Maybe would could get together and help each other.

Does anyone know if any specific Turkish language learning system is better than any others? I was thinking of getting the Rosetta Stone ones.

Here is what you do....look for a language helper...someone in the school system who speaks english and who would like to improve their english skills and then do a swap...they help you with your turkish for one hour and you help with their english...it really does work...there are many people who have done this and have been very successful...also read read read...translate it and practice reading the turkish aloud so that you can hear the accent...

glad you are here and enjoy the journey...

I too would love to see this team active again- especially since I am now actually in Turkey! I so wished that I knew more Turkish. It is so difficult to sit around smiling while everyone chats away. It will be even worse when my husband leaves and my son starts school- I will be solo- without any translators whatsoever!!!! Maybe it will get me to learn quicker.
