Chapter 12 Recovering a Sense of Faith

I have finally finished THE ARTISTS WAY it has only taken me 25 years ...

I have always been fed positive things about doing art and music. At this time in my life, I finally have time to be productive and can afford to be.

I am beginning a new journey today and every day is a new day to do a bit more. Today is the first day of the rest of my life and I will challenge myself and get moving.

What Would I Like to Create

In all honesty, I would like to turn the entire basement into an Art Studio. I would like to paint, do large ceramic sculptures and play classical guitar. I have never thought about selling my art but if I could develop something from the inside to the outside of me that I believe others would be interested in that would be great. Even if that means just providing others the confidence to do art. I am sure that I would like more but I feel humbled and small, vulnerable and old. My reality gets in the way of my dreams

List five ways you will change as you continue

1. I will be playing my guitar
2. I will be doing art instead of just thinking about it or talking about it
3. My relationship with what Julia Cameron calls God Concept continues to morph and will continue to change.
4. I will go back to my old life-drawing circle once a week and find other ways to become more active in the art community where I live.
5. I will strengthen my body as well as my connection to spirituality and art.

Five ways you intend to nurture yourself in the next six months.
1. Go on regular Artists Dates
2. Do my best to exercise more- take a walk every day and do yoga regularly
and Enjoy nature on an up-close and personal level DAILY.
3. Complete The Writing Diet: Write Yourself the Right-Size.
4, Keep my own counsel and follow the rule of self-containment.
5. Take comfort in my special friends, visit with them more often, smile and laugh.

I have finished very few things in my life that have had this amount of personal impact on me.

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...

"The creative process is a process of surrender, not control" (page 195).

Week 12 Tasks:
1. I have journaled about my resistance and fears going on from here.
2. I have a better understanding about the "payoffs" of my current procrastination, for example, being the good employee, and punishing myself for not being perfect.
3. Some affirmations about my continued creativity as I graduate this course:
- Cherishing myself will make me strong
- My actions will follow how I feel
- Perfection is the enemy of consistency
- I am exactly where I am supposed to be.

1. I did my morning pages six times. Yes, I have accepted them as a permanent practice. It was still difficult this week to finish them. But even if I have to write “I have nothing to say here” a few times, then I usually think of something to write. I have found they are invaluable for giving a voice to those little things that annoy me, that may seem insignificant, but they are really a big deal and I have found when I do give them some attention it gives me enormous relief. I have learned that it’s the small comforts that give my day to day existence so much more joy and ease. I have also learned that the morning pages will give you insight into patterns in your life, which is so important when you want to live your life consciously and make positive changes.

2. My artist’s date this week was cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, but I still get credit for showing up when I was supposed to. Yes, I will allow this as a permanent custom. The Artist’s dates are essential for “filling the well.”

3. Of course, I did experience synchronicity this week. A friend of mine announced this week that she’s going through a separation with her husband, and when I listened to my webinar that very day, it was about how to deal with major life changes. I also came across a book that seemed perfect for her while I was perusing the Internet for something completely different.

4. Another interesting issue that has come up that I realize is significant to my recovery is self esteem. It’s interesting because I thought I had dealt with this already a few months ago in a major way, but here it is again. One thing that really caught my attention was when people treat you inappropriately, do not say “It’s OK” because that gives them permission to keep treating you that way. This week, I was reminded in a big way that IT IS NOT OK. And it is my responsibility to say so.

Phewwwww, I’m done! I graduated the course! After several false starts, debilitating procrastination, depression, denial, illness, and several lame excuses, and YEARS later after actually buying this book, I have finally allowed myself the time and space to do it. But I won’t stop here….look for “Week 13 and Beyond” posts from me because I plan on sticking with it.

The adventure is not over, it’s just beginning (smile)
