Good for you, Cindy! Self-encouragement is great and I'm really striving to do more positive self-talk. Build up, not tear down - right?

I have not been setting goals for awhile. I think I'll set one today ..and that is to eat sensibly till weigh in day on Sunday. I feel as if I've lost, feel good actually...so I want to carry that feeling to the scale..don't want a disappointment waiting for me! It's onlt 3 more days , silly to throw it all away at this point....and this is me ..lecturing me!

Feeling much better today, but had only the energy to do my PT and a 1 mile easy workout with Leslie. Thanks for you thoughts!
Need to get back on track now with my nutrition.

Mona, I hope you feel better soon. I know that PT will be hard for a while. I went through that with my frozen shoulder. Unfortunately, it didn't do much. Then one day several months after it was over my shoulder just popped and started working again.

Thanks for the thumbs up, Darlene. But the weekend was a total blow out and today not looking so good either.
Came down with a chest cold, feel icky, and hurting from physical therapy. So laying around, icing my knee and grazing. The therapist warned me that because we did something new today it was going to hurt. And she was right. emoticon
Over the weekend my only exercise was the therapy exercises. This morning I did a short Leslie Sansone workout before PT, plus hit the recumbent bike for about 15 minutes. Might have been a mistake.
Nutritional balance is fairly good, but calories already over 1400. Thinking I'm finished eating for the day even though it's early.

Now 4 days in a row with calories under 1300 and nutritional balance in range, plus getting more than 30 minutes of exercise. Tomorrow is a travel day with an all-day meeting with lunch provided. Will just have to do the best I can. emoticon

I am still not getting things right with my nutrition, but I'm doing good with the exercise except getting really sore at times. This week I have been to pickleball twice and it included games as well as clinic. Yesterday I went to Silver Sneakers Classic. The one I went to was a little more cardio than the one I went to near me, not as much balance.

I find evening eating is really hard to control, so have been trying to not eat anything (or drink any calories) after dinner.
Made 3 days in a row under 1300 calories and getting 30 minutes of exercise, even if it's chair workouts and physical therapy exercises. Therapist told me today that I can resume some low-impact aerobics, with the knee support, and the easy workouts - no "boosted walking." But need to pay attention to how the knee feels afterward. And of course continue 2Xday with therapy exercises. Ice, heat, NSAIDS but at least the pain is getting much less.

Good morning, ladies.
I have to re-set again. Weekends are SO BAD for me, nutritionally. Yesterday I did not avoid the goodies after church. Did fairly well with the rest of my meals but still way over. Friday night was a calorie blow-out - really need to get a handle on that! emoticon
Plus, still no impact exercise, but have been doing several of the chair routines on SparkTV. They are workouts, but frankly, sitting on the edge of a hard chair is not good on my hips! emoticon This morning I did 2 - one with aerobic (yes, in a chair) exercise and one with hand weights.
emoticon emoticon

Way to go Darlene, keep pushing on! emoticon

I have to reset my goals back to the original ....for the next three days I have to keep my calories at or near 1200 and continue to exercise. So far the exercise sems to be the easy part for me...but the eating has turned into grazing again and on the wrong things...there is candy in the huse...no one is making me eat it but I am picking at it!! emoticon ...I need this sign on y cupboard and fridge!

It could have been from me that you heard of Silver Sneakers, but more likely from someone else. I can't usually remember the proper name of the program. Today I stopped by one of the other rec centers to get their calendar. They have another Silver Sneakers class there that is for balance, I think. The one at the close center is one you have to pay extra for.

I didn't do the bike like I was going to today since I am still somewhat sore. I will try to get down there tomorrow before they close. Actually, if I want to go to the play my friend's niece is in I will have to get there early since I have to be at my friend's by 11:30. I would guess that this week I didn't get 3 days of exercise (unless you count that painful half day at the home show), but I did get in 3 exercise sessions.

You're getting in lots of exercise -- Good for you!
Today, I did 2 of the SP chair workouts and was quite surprised that they really are workouts! Also, some walking today waiting with husband for his dr. appointment, better than sitting for sure. Especially after over an hour riding in the car to get there.
Now have 5 days under 1300 calories with decent nutritional balance and enough fiber. Today may not turn out so good with eating a meal out, even though I was careful. But I know I'll be under my 1500 calorie recommendation by Spark.
I've heard of the Silver Sneaker program - maybe from you??? - but it's not available here. Our local Senior services offices does offer some programs, but not on a regular basis.
Beautiful, sunny day here with snow melting again.

I got a bit much yesterday in walking through the home show and getting up and down from a little kid's chair and the floor (got one let stretched on the floor, but couldn't do the other leg because it hurt my hip) then did two classes today - one for pickle ball which will be cardiac and one Silver Sneakers that does stretching and resistance, but currently gets my heart rate up, too. Earlier this week I did reclining bike. If my aches will go away maybe I can bike after Bible study tomorrow.

Now have 4 days in a row under 1300 calories.
Will have to reconsider exercise goals as Dr. told me today to not do any exercises (even low-impact) until I've completed a couple weeks of physical therapy for my knee. Finally bit the bullet and made an appointment to get it checked. emoticon
Maybe need to look up some chair workouts on the site.
Drinking my water.

I did not meet my exercise goals yesterday but today was a good one. I'm just roughly tracking food, but I'm pretty sure I'm staying near 1200 calories.
Darlene, even 10 minutes of exercise a couple times a day is good...start slow and build! You can do it! emoticon

Hi Darlene, those sound like good goals.
I managed to be under 1300 calories 2 days in a row and am on track for today. Exercise is done, and working on keeping active during the day.

You guys are doing good.

I am trying to just get back to doing some kind of exercise, so I think I will make my goal for the week to get at least 3 days of exercise of maybe 20 minutes (mainly because that is all I could manage on the recumbent bike today and I am really hurting now). I am going to try to get to bed earlier, too.

Saturday night was a total calorie blowout! emoticon Over 2000 by the time I logged everything. Really bad!!!
So yesterday (Sunday) started over again and came in just over 1200 calories with decent balance and enough fiber. Sunday is my rest day but still had almost a half hour shoveling snow so we could get animals fed and get the car out for Church. Avoided all the goodies at the after service social time. emoticon Also, made sure to make movement a regular event throughout the afternoon and evening.
Today I did 3 miles with Leslie, incorporating some upper body strength training with resistance bands.
I do some strength training with bands and/or hand weights at least a couple times a week but it's probably not as much as I should do.

Good job Mona. I had a lot of company on the weekend so did not track my food but I think I was over the 1200 calories but not over my limit. I'm starting a new goal today and that is to add some strength exercises for the next three days...I used weights in a couple of walk sessions but I want to do more floor exercises. So 10 minutes at least a day for the next three days.

One more day of meeting my calorie and exercise goals. emoticon
Because I had to drive over an hour each way to visit my husband in the hospital (He's coming home today) I did more sitting that I wanted, but I did walk him around the hospital corridors twice while I was there, and didn't sit the whole time. Plus when I was at home I did pretty well at getting up often, to just walk around, march in place, or do some stretches. Doesn't count as exercise, but does get the blood moving! emoticon

Met my goals for the past 3 days, and will make the same goals for the next 3 days - that is to eat under 1300 calories per day and exercise at least 30 minutes daily. I'd love to be able to exercise more, but it hurts.
One more new goal, though. My goal is to get up and move every 30 minutes when sewing, reading or watching TV.

This sounds like a great idea! Starting today I'll be joining you.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday my goal will to keep calories under 1300 and exercise at least 30 minutes. Have my exercise in already today, and will have to plan the rest of my food for the day.
Thank you for re-activating this thread!

I wish that was what my cravings were. Mine are ice cream, cookies, bread, chocolate. Then the grocery store had a free Friday of 2 liters of soda. I haven't drank soda for several years. Today I made an ice cream soda. I did use the carb smart ice cream, though. I don't know how they figure that, though. It is 14 total grams carbs and 4 grams fiber. That comes to 10 grams net carbs, not 4 like they have said.

Stress creates havoc in the body, that's for sure. I've read that sugar is addictive, and it wouldn't surprise me! I crave carbs sometimes - oatmeal, graham crackers, and fruit especially.

I am starting to think that some of my stomach problems are from knowing that it will probably happen. I was doing fine with what I ate today, then got problems again, but I know they weren't from what I had just eaten. So I need to de-stress and try to get back off the carbs again. I am just a terrible sugar addict.

The appointment was supposed to be with someone who could tell me what I can eat. They cancelled it late yesterday afternoon and no openings until June now. So I will have to be doing the figuring by myself. I must have taken an Immodium the other day, because I haven't had any problem today other than gas. In fact the opposite of my normal problem. I did have a can of soup that I used for some gravy this morning, but otherwise I was just having chicken and mashed potatoes. Later this afternoon, though, I had some dip with tortilla and a sugar free jello. I just got so hungry for something. I am in the mood for something sweet, but don't really have anything here but that jello.

Wow, Darlene that must be so frustrating! Do you have a Dr. who could refer you to a nutritionist? It seems pretty overwhelming to go it alone. emoticon

I am trying to find out what I can eat so that I don't have the problems I have keeping me from getting at least a part time job (Cassie and Orzo will hate that if I can find one). I have an appointment Wednesday and last night did some research on the internet on what people with IBS can and can't eat. Only problem is that the WebMD site that I was looking at starts out with all that you can't eat, then with what you shouldn't eat which included whole grains (trying to avoid grains anyway), beans and that type of thing, a whole lot of fruits including apples, any root vegetable, asparagus (which I just bought). It says that carrots and related are good, but that doesn't make sense with the no root vegetables. Most of those are because of unsoluble fiber. Then it turns around and says to eat all carbs, listing bread, rice, apples, etc. I think they are nuts. Oh, can't have dairy, either. No fat or very low fat. Carbs are also listed as a problem. How does one figure out what to eat from that?

Yesterday I did manage to get out and take Cassie for a walk. We did up the street and back twice. Most of it was at a fairly decent clip and on the way home the last time I did some training with her on heel and sit. I haven't been able to actually get out and take her for a walk for a while, then got too lazy and just watched TV, so my goal on that is to be able to get out and take her for walks and not watch all that TV and play computer games. I am hoping it will help with the IBS and with my breathing, energy, and strength if I get all this together.

I roasted a split turkey breast today...for healthy turkey sandwiches - yum! I also stocked up on more fruit, lighter yogurts, vegetables...looking forward to eating better this week, than I have been.

I'm in....I read a Spark article this morning about how setting small obtainable goals create habits, and the habit becomes part of our "norm."...ok...my words but the point was...to set small goals and do them ....one at a time....until they become habits. So today, I am going to start with being "mindful." I am going to work on this until it's a habit.....I can do this....I can do this...I know I can! I know I WILL! Keep moving forward y'all! emoticon

Continuing to work on eating a better balance of food - for some reason my choices seem to be high carb, low protein so I work on getting the recommended balance, plus keeping calories in check. It's a daily thing. emoticon

I too am joining all of you here in setting new goals and getting back on track - again! But the key here is we are not giving up. We keep trying...and I really want to succeed. So with all of you here, it sure does help and I am glad you are here. Yes, indeed - we can do it!

Yes, one day at a time is the way to go. Even that can be hard for me, but if I can do one day and then another and another that will be great. This morning I did have a bit of a skip because I finished off the potatoes & ham that were left over. I don't have any of the other stuff that sends me off on binges, though, and I'm going to stay away from them. I might have a problem starting the walking for a few days since the eating has left me with a bad gut and bad weather is heading in, but when the weather clears maybe my gut will also be doing better. My back is doing better, so maybe I can get Fancy's feet trimmed a little, too. Still can't find my rasp so might have to contact my old shoer and see what he wants for one of his old rasps.

I think I'll start a new thread and anyone that wants to join in..hop aboard!

Well, it's not quite as late here (or early in the morning), but I have been thinking of what I need to do to get to feeling better. I have been having a heck of a time for a while, especially the last few weeks. I was in a play the week before Easter (all week) and dinners were mostly with carbs and carbs don't do my diabetes any good. I also have a habit of getting carb cravings when I start on carbs and all that isn't making me feel too good. So I am getting motivated to start back to eating better. I have one birthday party to make it through the end of this month and a baby shower next month, but I am hoping that I can stay away from all those carbs between those times. Also staying away from so much grains. It means I have to go to the store tomorrow (today), but I need to anyway. I keep reading that apples are helpful in lowering BG even though they have a lot of carbs (I think because of the fiber), so I am going to get some of them.

Other than the diet changes I am hoping that I will be able to start walking more. I haven't been with feeling the way I have been and I haven't been when the weather is cold and that laziness has to stop. So I will say emoticon .

Thank you.

I got a picture forwarded on FB yesterday. It was to show that people can do things even at an advanced age. It was of Ardith Bruce who was a top barrel racer when I was growing up. She is still barrel racing (shown in the pic) at age 84. Gosh, I wish I could do that. I was doing reining with Fancy, but she can't do that anymore and I can't even get on.

Will be praying for you to make it through the Passion Play! Sounds very ambitious but with God on your side all things are possible!
Yes, the collard greens are quite like cooked spinach, with a bit more texture. Not sure what they'd taste like without the spices.

Do the collard greens taste similar to spinach or arugula? I have seen them and some other things like mustard greens at Walmart and been tempted to get a bunch and try them. I have only heard of them cooked and I know I don't like the spinach cooked (like it raw) so I wasn't too sure about trying those. Maybe the food pantry would have some sometime and I can try them.

I got hit with another challenge to make myself the other night. My part in the Passion Play turns out to have more running than I had thought. I thought it took running across the stage to get to the Upper Room, but I have to run to the back of the auditorium, across a set of chairs and then to the front of the room and up the stairs to the stage. I have never been able to run much (weak ankles) and definitely haven't the last several years, so I have to get in condition and get able to do that run and in the next three weeks. Then it is for 7 nights straight. I am not really sure how to work that up, but I tried to do a walk/run plan on Saturday. It seemed to go alright, but that night I had some bad cramps so I think I have to slow it down. I think if I can manage to get this going well enough I would like to keep going and try to get to where I can do a 5K, not running all the way, but either a walk or a walk/run combination.

I have been wanting to try wraps instead of sandwiches, using a Romaine lettuce leaf as the wrap...just keep forgetting to try! I did pretty good without the bread, most of the winter with none.It helped reduce carbs. I may try another challenge soon. Good luck with yours!

My friend was going to Sprouts before picking me up yesterday and got me some. I haven't had the chance to try it yet. It came bundled like beets, 3 to a bundle.

Good for you staying away from the bread. I didn't get anymore and have only had one piece of rye in the last week and a half or so. Just never can figure out how to have something like a ham sandwich without the bread.

My goal of not eating bread went well..I'm not sure if it helped but at least that was a few calories that I did not eat! I had two slip ups...about a week apart where I had a slice of homemade bread each time. I did by flat bread today so I guess the bread fast will be over. I am having an issue getting enough fibre now so have to see what I can do about that. I have never eaten kohlrabi either, would have to go to a special grocer to get it here. I love most vegetables so I would like to try it.

I dislike turnips too, but really like kohlrabi. Not sure what to compare it to - texture rather like daikon radish but taste is not nearly so spicy.

The cheese is higher fat and calories, but my main problem is the carbohydrates. When I get them down I usually end up with low calories (except these recipes all seem to be high calories, including ones without cheese). Is the kihlrabi a fairly sweet vegetable like jicama or is it more like turnips? (I hated the turnips I tried)

Hi,
We grow lots of kohlrabi here in Wisconsin and mostly just eat it cut into sticks or slices raw, or chopped into salads. It does make a lower starch substitute for potatoes cooked. Gratin recipes have cheese? That's where extra calories can hide. Good luck on your cooking experiments!

I borrowed the Grain Brain Cookbook and the Wheat Belly 30 Minute Cookbook from the library and hope I can try some of the vegetable recipes in there. There is one for a Kohlrabi Gratin that I may try. I can't remember if I have had Kohlrabi before or not so I haven't bought any because I am afraid I will end up wasting my money. Most all the recipes I am going to have to cut in half or more. One problem I am seeing is they seem to be so high in calories. If I eat one thing it would end up being only that one thing to keep the calories from going too high. 'course, I can't eat very much at a time anyway.

One goal I have had (for several years) is to get my strength back. I don't know how much of it I can get back. I would like to be able to get on a horse, even if Fancy is past where she can really be ridden and I can't afford another one. Still, if I had the chance to ride again it would be nice to be able to.

Slipping up a bit with the veggies - wishing fresh ones were available but spring is a long way off. Getting plenty of fruit, but they increase carbs. Grapefruit and oranges are really good now.

Just happened on this thread. I tried the No Junk Food Challenge in January and got pretty far with it. Unfortunately, I can't seem to stick with anything. I would like to get more vegetables like you guys are. I need to figure ways to fix them so that I can eat them, but I am not too good at that. Also need to stop eating the bread again. Your home made bread sounds so good, though. I haven't done that for a long time.

I make my kefir smoothies with strawberries, blueberries or even peaches with a little stevia if needed. Have found through trial and error that tart berries like raspberries don't work as they conflict with the tang of the kefir.

Okay, I've seen the little bottles of it in stores. I would have to sweeten it with fruit or something...I guess I need to grocery shop soon.
I need to browse ansd see what I can come up with. The rice salsa and beans sounds good....I may do something like that for supper.

In the stores they call it "drinkable yogurt". It's so easy to make once you have the culture. And when you make your own you know what's in it and what's not - sugar and chemicals.

I am going to give up bread and make sure I eat protein with every meal, enough to meet my daily requirement . Since I had toast for breakfast I will make my official start tomorrow, but for the rest of the day I am going to try to stick to the plan!
